Somebody help me or soon I´ll regret the day I decided to get my first dachsie (it is Helga, as some of you perhaps remember). Today it was a very busy day at work and I exhausted myself to get everything done by 4 p.m., then drive home, pack all the luggage plus family in the car ( two children, three dachsies plus one rottweiler) get the trailer and set off for a visit to my parents some three hundred miles away. I have an appointment there tomorrow to have my car repaired at an economical price. On sunday I was going to attend a dog show etc. When I came home, I went to give the dachsies their dinner before the journey. They now have an enclosure with a doghouse so they can run free and dig holes without causing danger to the chickens in the neighbourhood. When I opened the gate with the foodbowls in my hand I was extra cautious not to let Little Princess sneak out. But this time it was not her, it was Helga whose good obedience (for a dachsie) has been my pride; she flashed away like an arrow and did not pay any attention to my desperate cries. The last I saw of her was a little brown creature running through the pasture together with my neighbour´s two elkhounds. And here I am, four hours and several miles later, still waiting for her.
Now I would love to hear some other stories of troubles dachsies have caused to my fellow zoners. It would help me to bear this more bravely. I remember a story about a sofa torn to pieces, more stories of that kind would be great comfort. Thanks.

I know how you feel! I take Owen to play at a local dog park here in San Diego, Ca. It's a BIG grassy area, with ravines on both side. Well, someone threw a really cool ball and it went down into this VERY deep ravine... It's not even his ball, but he just had to go after it! I must have had 10 people standing at the edge of this ravine, which I could never climb down! http://dachsie.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif We can see Owen, I'm calling his name... He doesn't even look up! His nose goes on (there are squirrels down there) and his ears just shut off! GEEEZ!! The guy who threw the ball braved the steep hill and went down and got Owen. http://dachsie.org/ubb/hapfac01.gif I can't tell you how relieved I was!! I knew he'd come up eventually, but who can wait on dachshund time??

I know Miss Helga will be back, sorry she's ruined your day with her "need" to run like the wind.

Tina, Neither Punkin nor Josephine have ever ran off, but if destruction is what you want...I got stories. One week after we bought our brand new home, we came home to discover a chewed up carpet. Two feet wide and a foot long. Carpet and padding shredded to pieces all over the place! We replaced the floor with vinyl hardwood looking floors. Then, we had a sunroom built on to the house. My husband accidentally closed Punkin in the sunroom the night. She fell asleep in the Papasan (sp?) chair and he couldn't see her. She chewed a huge hole in the door...and the laundry room door...and the door to my daughter's room. I could fill a book with her mischief...but I wouldn't trade it for a million dollars.

Helga will come running back. She'll give you those eyes and you'll melt! http://dachsie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Oh Tina, as we say in the States, BUMMER! It's bad enough when any one of your dogs misbehaves in such a dramatic way, but it's SO much worse when it's your pride-and-joy dog! I expect Peaches to be willful and to have to be watched at ALL times, but when my angel boy Farfel http://dachsie.org/ubb/angel.gif disobeys, I feel utterly bereft. Just as you do now, I think!

The very first time I ever let Farfel run off the leash, I had gone with a friend and his standard poodle to a park, far away from traffic and other dangers. In the midst of the park was a small but dense woods. As soon as I had snapped off the leash, Farfel was gone--just as you described, this brown flash, ears flapping, tearing away from me at light speed. He vanished into the woods, and no amount of calling brought any response. I was borderline hysterical, but my friend Tom told me to sit down at the point where Farf had disappeared, and then he circled the wooded area, trying to catch a glimpse.

Sure enough, about half an hour later, Farfel walked calmly out of the woods, right at the spot where he had gone in. He was TOTALLY unconcerned--sniffing as he came and wagging his tail.

He's never done it since. Thank GOD!!! I just hope Helga didn't make for your neighbor's chickens!!!

I would love to let our two little giggle mosters off of their leash, but I KNOW tha minute I let them off they would be chasing any trail their little noses could find. When we were living in KS, we had a cute little house with a fenced in yard all for Henry. One afternoon after it had snowed, Bart and I went out to put salt on the sidewalk outside of the fence. Henry sneaked out even though we were extremely careful. He took off and we had to chase him. Luckily this was when he only liked going for walks on the sidewalk...so he was running on the sidewalk around our block rather than crossing the street. We caught up to him when he stopped to check out a house on the backside of the block......

When he was upset with us for leaving him alone one time, he took every single thing out of my husband's wallet and layed them out in a line from the front door to the back door...he didn't chew up anything, just tried to show us how smart he was.

When my husband was having fun with the garden hose, chasing Henry outside one summer, he squirted Henry. When I let the wet Henry inside, he ran to my husband's pillow and relieved himself. (I really think Bart deserved that, however!)

Need something to read while you pace, hmmm?

Well let's see, do you want to hear about the times that I had to get scratched to pieces and covered with poison ivy as I scoured the neighborhood for the escapees. (who slipped out the fence gate)
or the wall-to-wall rug that was eaten through
or the door that was chewed through
or the chewed $500. eyeglasses
or the encounter with the skunk
or the insistence on running into the last of the gunky-slimy pool water
or running into our local hospital
or having a bout of diarhhea in a friend's car

Oh Oh Oh! I win on this one!!!

My parents and I were walking Frankie, Oscar and Ben (pop-eyed, smelly, shedding dog of my parent's) off-leash on a quiet trail. We'd been there at least 50 times before and the boys never go further than 10 feet from me... The trail is beside the Credit Valley river - a very shallow, narrow river that winds around Mississauga.

Then Oscar saw a goose. It was all over. He charged the goose, the goose jumped in the river. Oscar jumped in the river. Frankie followed Oscar. I followed Frankie. Ben followed me. It was a lovely spring day but not warm enough for swimming.

My dogs started floating away. The river was moving quite swiftly because of the melting snow. The boys were still trying to get to the goose.

I grabbed Frankie and boy was he mad at me. He struggled and barked and whined. With him under one arm, I tried to run through the theigh-deep water to get Oscar but the bottom was all uneven slippery rocks and I couldn't catch up. At one point I could have put Frankie on a bank and reached Oscar but I knew Frankie would just jump back in. I thought Oscar was gone forever. (Even though this happened the same afternoon that he puked in the new car -- the door locks still don't work -- I was still frantic)

Fortunately the goose headed for shore and Oscar somehow beat the current and turned around and followed the goose. I finally grabbed him and just started crying. They were still wiggling and trying to get the goose. They were never worried. I ruined their fun.

As my asthma attack was starting I reached the bank where my mother was looking on. Then I noticed that Ben was in the river. He's deaf but I still yelled at him until my throat was raw. I was just a mess. Ben was fine. He could reach the bottom. He eventually turned and saw me and calmly waded over.

All dogs were wagging and smiling. I was sopping and crying and trying to catch my breath while attempting to tone down my emotions so not to upset my very sensitive father (alzheimer's).

I'm upset that they discovered swimming. The water was never an issue before. Now they try to get into any water that they can. They probably would have been fine without my heroic dive into the water. Their leash-free days have ended.

Let us know when she gets home!

Surprise! It wasn't the water they discovered. You did that, they discovered the GOOSE!

Wotan hasn't ever been able to get into much trouble because he's the 3rd dog we raised in the house and had everything puppyproof by then.

His "sisters" on the other hand...
They've killed and eaten at least 20 hens...Stolen sets of freshly killed deer heads with antler sets from the neighbor's dog (who stole them first)...
Eaten the gate-trying to get IN...
Cornering the mail guy and not letting him move at all (while smiling doggie smiles and wagging their tails)...
Pulled out all the garbage...
Eaten all the Goose eggs this year...
Dug giant cool pits in the bushes...
Dragged down a whole deer carcass, blood trailing down the hill, ate most of it like lions of the Serengheti, then puked it up in the house!
Tina- Helga thinks she is an elkhound, too. It's just her friends have too long of legs to look right, like she does!

Wheeler is my escape artist. If he is outside too long (in his opinion) he will try to find a way under the fence. My yard has rocks, cinder blocks, and logs around the fence blocking holes. Last week, Rita, slipped past me while I was putting the puppies in the ex-pen. It was about 10:30 pm. She took off into the field behind my house. I was running around barefoot in my pj's calling her. I finally found her in the shed next door where she had cornered the cat. I was eaten alive by chiggers from running around the field looking for her. Right after I moved back to Arkansas from Iowa, I lost Thorin, who was very special to me. He found a hole under the fence and took off. I was out in the yard with him but turned my back for a minute and he was gone. Because we hadn't lived there very long he couldn't find his way home. He went 2 miles to the main road and was hit by a car. I had been looking for him all night. I get frantic now when they take off. I'm sure you'll find your girl safe and sound and you won't know whether to kiss or kill her. Good luck.

Ok everyone, I know I can not beat the goose story, but I have a few:

We have only had our rescue Bailey for 6 weeks and here goes

My hubby just got brand new eyeglasses (his are realy costly because he has bad eyes), he came home from work, plopped on the couch and took off his glasses, laid them on the coffee table , when he was done rubbing his eyes the glasses were gone. being half blind he went on a hunt for Bailey (my BAD boy) yes they were under the dining room table half chewed http://dachsie.org/ubb/eek.gif

Then there is my little angel doll I keep on the end table, I spent some $$ on her too. Lets just say she is having a permanent really bad hair day http://dachsie.org/ubb/crying.gif

Lets see now, there would be our Play Station remote control, chewed beyond repair http://dachsie.org/ubb/crying.gif

Not to mention a handful of underwear & socks, one of my bras http://dachsie.org/ubb/emb.gif , and a few hot wheels cars along the line.

The one time (only time) he ran out the door without a leash I ran after him and he was in the middle of the street barking at a car that had to stop so it would not hit him , it ws like he was trying to hold the people in the car prisnors http://dachsie.org/ubb/emb.gif He willl always be on the leash!

Yes this is all Bailey, the bad boy http://dachsie.org/ubb/bounce.gif

My little Ginger the http://dachsie.org/ubb/angel.gif is my good lil' girl only chewed a few litte things when she was a wee lil' puppy

By the way , as I am typing this post I turned around to find Bailey chewing my hubby's slipper http://dachsie.org/ubb/eek.gif

It is nice to know we are are in the same boat, sometimes we just are going down the river with 2 paddles and sometimes up the creek with no paddles

Linda

Gotta love these smiles thingy's

I don't have any really terrible stories about my dachsie, Annie--I have to say she's never done anything terribly bad. My mother's dachshund Molly, though (who is Annie's aunt) begged to go outside one snowy morning at 5 a.m. and promptly DISAPPEARED. After about 10 minutes of frantically calling Molly, my mother woke my sister, who was visiting. My mother lives in an area of New Hampshire that has bears, foxes, coyotes--they both were convinced by now that Molly had been somebody's breakfast. My sister plunged outside in her bare feet and ran down the hill, where Molly greeted her, wagging her tail happily. They never did figure out what happened--she probably smelled a deer and took off after it. Molly went happily back to bed and slept, my sister finally fell asleep... and my mother lay awake the rest of the night!

Molly has eaten several pairs of expensive earrings (diamonds and pearls being her favorites), though my mother always manages to get them back (you can imagine how!). She has also eaten two pairs of glasses, a hearing aid, and completely destroyed the upper plate of an elderly visitor who had the unwisdom to leave her teeth on the bedside table! None of this has ever caused any vet expenses, but it's been extremely expensive in terms of compensation to the victims!

Yesterday was a bad day here at the farm! I was taking an afternoon snooze, and I swear Wotan was trying his very best to get me up. He kept whining and running out his little door all the time. Faintly I could hear the "evil" sisters barking and making a commotion, but thought nothing off it. BIG MISTAKE.

When I went to do the hen head count later that nite I only came up with 6 instead of 9.
The ones that were missing were the biggest, most dominant , best layers. http://dachsie.org/ubb/angryfire.gif

Wellll- I knew what happened. But there was not evidence (the usual piles of feathers). This morning a 1/2 eaten hen was outside on the lawn. I am not "speaking" to the evil twins- even though I know it was too hard for them to be "good" for 2 whole weeks around the birds. Grrrrrrr.

Oh well, this too will blow over. My chicken experiment is slowly dwindling down to a sad end. http://dachsie.org/ubb/blue02.gif

Mean time, all this has made Wotan look like such a goooood boy!

Has Helga come back yet?

Pam C

There is a method to teach dogs to leave chickens alone. Farmers use it. It involves a fence charger (low voltage and amps) a chicken and a chicken killing dog. I have not tried but it is one of my books, if you are interested I can read up on it. They swear by it.

Thanks for everybody for your support. Because of some trouble in the telephone lines I could not get on the web and tell you, when Helga came back around midnight, having been away for seven hours. She was unharmed, very hungry and seemed to be very satisfied with herself. http://dachsie.org/ubb/ksmile.gif The whole family made a really early start for my home town and all´s well that ends well: I got the car repaired, Miss Piggy got to the dog show and won 1:st prize http://dachsie.org/ubb/bounce.gif. We met Helga´s breeder who told that Helga´s mother and grandmother had run away at the same time and stayed away almost as long as Helga did (Do dachsies have telepathic abilities, do you know?). And the rest of the weekend my young dachsies dug holes in the lawn around my parents´ house, tried to remove roses and tulips from the flowerbeds and I had to answer numerous "why on earth do you keep those dachshunds-hunting dogs are not suitable for pets, aren´t they"-questions. This in spite of the fact that Helga was a perfect http://dachsie.org/ubb/angel.gif for the rest of the weekend. My parents are definitely non-dachsie people.
http://dachsie.org/ubb/angryfire.gif Well, they do not know what they are missing. May be we could start another thread on the topic "Why I have a dachsie- in spite of all these facts?" Your stories were terrific, I think I should save them for further use and especially the goose-story helps me to remember that things could be worse. http://dachsie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

My funny tail is when the two beasts were outside, a neighboring Lab wandered into the yard. Lady bit the poor fellow on the only part she could reach! They don't call'm WEINER dogs for nuthin! After running about half a block the Lab just layed down, my two "ferocious" beasts ran around him in circles as he whined in pain until his owner heard the commotion.
