View Full Version : How long do you walk your dog for?

We walk Charlie about 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes at night. That doesn't seem like much to me but he's very healthy, not chubby and always has a little rest after.
How about you? How long is your walk?

I guess I should clarify that I mean How long is ONE walk! So I guess 20 minutes a day is fine. In the winter though it's next to nil when it's -25!!!

OMG! 10 minutes??? Peaches is just getting warmed up after 10 minutes! :dizzy:
We try to walk her at least an hour every night. I would say we run about 5-10 minutes of that hour. :faint:
Even then, she still wants to play when we get home. It wears you out, but I always sleep really well! :snooze:

He walks really fast. It's pretty bad, he walks so fast that if I don't do some stretches before we head out, I will cramp within the first ten minutes.

All combined Low-la gets around 1 1/2 hours of walks a day. Between me and grandma she gets pretty worn out. She has a quick potty run in the yard at 6:00am, then she goes to grandmas at 9:00 and gets her first walk. At 12:00 she is out again. She spends most afternoons sunning and chasing squirrells in the fenced yard at grandmas. Grandma walks her before she brings her home at 5-5:30 then I take her for a 1/2 hour walk before dinner and then we have our "after dinner stroll" before bed.

once in a while for about 15-20 minutes.
Its hard to walk 5 doxies.
But they do enjoy it.
Usually we will go out on the boat and hit an island where I let them run free. They so enjoy that.

to walk for 30 minutes a day, Brekke may as well enjoy that with me! We are starting out at 15 and will work our way up to 30 - she had a great time yesterday and kept up with me pretty easily, although her tongue was definitely hanging out when we got back home! I have to walk so that my cholesterol and calcium meds work as they should! Julia B.

Every time we take Harley out it's for a walk. We live in a townhouse and don't have a backyard.

We go for a 45 minute walk in the morning (6 a.m. to 6:45 a.m.), a fifteen minute walk for my lunch break, and another 45 minutes or so after my dinner (before the doggies dinner). On top of that they get yard time. Lots of the walks is spent running after squirrels. The dogs wish I was fater :D
Depending on how cold it gets and how the dogs like it, we'll probably walk less once winter hits....

I'm hoping now that our weather is getting cooler Ally and I can go for more walks. She really likes them.
I have a questions about "walks" tho... Because of Ally's small size she's a mini and about the 10 lb range), do I have to be careful of how much we walk? Or can I let her be the judge of how long she wants to walk? Every time we go out she is still pulling me after 2 miles. I just don't want her to over do it. I have never had to pick her up and carry her. She does get a big drink when we get home and is pooped but heck, so am I! lol

Pippit isn't much of a morning walker(I literally have to pull him out of bed to go potty) He really could care less about taking "walks"--so we usually only walk for 15 minutes at the most. What he loves(and we can be gone a good hour)is hiking in the woods. He loves to explore the smells and will look back at me like, "come on mom, you're slacking" when I'm going too slow for him. I try to go at least every other with him. He loves it!!

I voted over 45 minutes, but I need to clarify that. It isn't a walk, so to speak, but it is exersize. Buddy gets at on average 2 hours of fetch per day. Sometimes it is more, sometimes it is less, but he runs, doesn't walk. We put in an electric fence and he can be out in the yard with me, I can garden, he plays ball. We've had him outside for an entire day and 80% of that time he is playing, the rest is spent sniffing out worms to rub in. Buddy loves to go for walks, but my 3 year old does not. Buddy loves to walk fast, I have to drag the 3 year old around. My goal is to start walking with the dog twice a week while he is in school, but so far, in one month we haven't done it once. Bad, I know, but he gets tons of exersize throughout the day and nights are spent playing an hour or two of fetch before bed.

Since Mia is still really a puppy, I walk her 15 minutes 3 times a day. Don't want to overdo it. We also play together inside the apartment and on the patio - ball, fetch, get the squeaky toy, etc. I will step up how far we go now that she's completed her shots. I'd like to double that time walking outside with her. Good for both of us.

I drag Tucker out of his crate to do potties at about 8 a.m. (he's been in there at least 8 hours by then.......I figure he might HAVE to go! Then he plays for about an hour, before our 9 a.m. 15 min. walk around the neighborhood. We have a fenced back yard; so, weather permitting, we spend a lot of our day outside... (at 3 1/2 months, I don't leave him outside alone yet). After dinner, we usually do a 15 - 30 minute walk.

With Bridget, it depends. If she really needs to go like first thing in the morning, or right when I get home from work, her walks are pretty quick.....She wants to do her business and then hurry back in for a treat. Other times she can become VERY easily distracted by lots of things......other dogs, people walking by, riding by etc.... air, a blade of grass moving, a bug......I'm sure many of you can relate :)....so in those cases we can be out for 30 to 45 minutes!!!!! I don't mind at all because the walks and fresh air are so good for them....it's just funny all the things that she notices!!

My guys get about 15 to 20 min. walking at the park with my roommate. I go and sit and chat, will walk a little but because of my back and legs can't go to far. The good thing is we have a great back yard fenced in and they chase the bunnies etc. But then we also play ball in the house all the time for Con. We love to take them to the woods to let them run and really enjoy the good life. Some times we get extra exersize doing baths afterwards though.

We walk a minimum of 30 minutes, daily - weather permitting. On the weekends & if the weather is good, twice daily.

I have to admit I have slacked with the walking a bit. I used to walk Rudy around 3.5 miles a day when we first got him, now we walk Rudy and Penny around 1-1.5 miles a day and sometimes again in the evening if it looks like it's going to be a pretty sunset. They do get a good walk in EVERY DAY but I need to start walking them a little further every day and try to get it back up to the 3 mile mark. We all feel better when we walk more!:Sun2:

Actually Annie does not go for on leash walks unless we are in the front yard. On week days she has to walk/play periods the first at 5:45 - 6:15 Am and the second from 5:00 to 5:30 PM. She is very prompt and demanding of her play time and if I am not out of the bed at 5:45 she will allow me one bark as a wake up call, she will also go and get her ball and bring it. We play ball for almost all the time period, allowing for sniffing, knawing on sticks etc. This is monday - friday. On the weekend she is flat out with us all the time with very few exceptions. If we are outside she is outside and if we are off to grocery shop she is always up for a road trip. She does get a good amount of exercise but traditional walks we have not done much of as yet.:bouncy1::loveshower:

Our two go for a 2 mile walk most evenings. I can't go that far that fast so hubby or daughter takes them. They have access to the large fenced yard all day and go out when they want to which is most of the day.:bouncy1:

Amos and I go for a 1 mile walk in the morning and again at night before bed.
He walks at a very fast pace so I don't do the time thing. My hubby will not walk him because he goes to fast when he is walking for the hodad! He would keep going but I am the one that gets tired it is like a slow run so we both get our excerise!:wahooo:

Weather pending it's 60+ min.(with water for them) I normally do not take them out to much in the summer (when the lows are still 85-90 and the highs are 100+). Oh and the spoiled ones don't like temps below 65 either. When Clay was smaller it was not unusual to see me carrying her on a walk during winter...I gave up:banghead:.

When I am able, I walk Ringo for about 15-20 minutes, although if I'm not feeling well sometimes it's only for 10 minutes. A lot of times I just do 10 minutes, but 2-3 times a day if the weather good and I'm feeling ok. I have a lot of health problems, so many days I can't walk him at all. But he's so active in the house, I have to feed him a ton of food or he loses weight so fast! And he's super muscular. So I don't feel too bad about it...
