Last night my husband took me out to dinner and on the way home we stopped at the grogery store. While in the store we saw a large ball (like kids play kick ball with) & he told me how he used to have a poodle who loved to play with balls. Soooo we bought this ball for butterbean to play with.
When we got home, oh my goodness, there was
a billion tiny pieces of toilet paper all over the whole house.

While I was cleaning up that mess, Bill brought in the ball. Butterbean was scared to death of it. He barked, then ran, then barked some more, then went to hide. Well, I was determined to introduce him to this ball & show him that it would not hurt him.
Wrong answer. All of the sudden, there was this horrible, smelly, stinky liquid all over me & my clothes. I had to give the dog and me a bath, & immediately wash my clothes, and get out the air freshener.

I have been around dogs all my life, and have never experienced this. What the heck was it???????? Will he do it again????????

My guess is that he evacuated his anal glands out of fright. Take a look at http://barkbytes.com/medical/med0029.htm
and see if this sounds right. The moral of the story is, never force a dog to confront something he's afraid of! Let him approach at his own pace. Poor Butterbean and poor Mom!

Hello Butterbean's Mum. I'm no expert but could it be that he sensed he'd done something wrong (the bits of paper) and sees the ball as something he was given while you were cross with him and therefore not a good thing? Hence the submissive piddling? Come on experts - help me out here!
This is Dr Shelbie's Mum Crane - I'm listening!!

Yep the anal glands sound like the culprit.

Dogs can empty them when they are scared or startled. -Though they can empty for other reasons too.

Rudy's sometimes leak a little bit when I trim his nails since he hates it so much.

It smells just awful...like dead mackeral or something.

Oh yep...anal glands! My dog Pudgie does this almost everytime we walk in the vet's office. If this is your first dachsie, keep an eye on scooting or dragging his butt on the floor. This usually means his anal glands need expressing. I have to take my dachshie every 4 weeks or so. But fear can cause them to empty their glands. It is smelly, but otherwise harmless. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/blah.gif

Oh yeah, it's the anal glands. Do you sense a pattern here? I agree with everyone: they self express when they are really scared. And it is usually a browninsh liquid that is very dead-fishy in odor. What a treat! You can take your pupper to the vet and perhaps s/he can show you how to do it at home. But, beware. Dachsies wriggle and it's hard to get a good grip w/o 6 people holding the little urchin. Isobel is due to go to the vet for just this thing. A trip in may be just the thing.

I once read on another board about someone's little dachsie expressing his anal glands when they took him to have his picture made with Santa Claus! Can you even imagine! So far I've been lucky as Chester has only had this done once, by the vet just recently. My husband took him in and learned to do it. He said it didn't look like that big of a deal, but for me to buy some playtex gloves and keep in the house!

I'm sorry, I know it wasn't very funny when it happened but I couldn't help laughing as I read your story. No experience with the anal glands, but lots of experience with the toliet paper. I have had my little one for over a year and still can't seem to get her to understand that Mommy need the toliet paper and it isn't her toy.

When Oscar was a puppy he was afraid of some of the toys I bought, so I just left them out and he eventually played with them.
Many times we come home to a million pieces of toilet paper everywhere. We now keep it on top of a cabinet in the bathroom, but Oscar will jump on the toilet to get the cabinet! I think we need to start keeping in the cabinet!

Been down both roads before. I must say that I would prefer to clean up the toilet paper mess over the anal gland messhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/blah.gif

By the way, I just love the Butterbean namehttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif When my son was a baby he had the real chubby cheeks and my hubby called him "butterbean" . I know their is a boxer by that name also.

Love it, really cute and differenthttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif
