What is the difference between Dapple and Double Dapple? Here are some pictures of 'Yogie', my foster, and wondered exactly what he is called?

Hmmm...to me Yogie looks like a regular dapple. Alot of double dapples don't have brown eyes and have more dapple or white in them.

Others on this board could probably tell you since they have more expience with them!

He's most definetly a single dapple, Barb. We do have several double dapples on the board- they're the result of a dachshund getting the dapple (merling) gene from both parents. When dappling hits the same part of a dog twice, instead of diluting, it deletes. So- the dog has white spots, with patches of dappling.

The BAD thing about double dapples is that when that dapple gene hits the eyes or ears TWICE (not an issue in single dapples), it deletes FUNCTIONS of those parts. Many DDs are born deaf, or with limited hearing- and a great number have limited vision, are completely blind, or are even born without eyes. :(

Noodle is a double dapple: http://www.dachsie.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=13533

Onebigmickeyfan's Annie is a DD: http://www.dachsie.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=13433

Heide belongs to the gorgeous boy laying down in the center of the logo (Benjamin).

And wow... I know we have more. :)

Definitely looks like a chocolate and tan (single) dapple to me. And beautiful at that. Of course, Hannah and I are partial.

Thanks so much, Chrissie,

I did see your wonderfull pics of your dogs, and was puzzled by the amount of white on one of them. Now that you explained how it deletes color, I can understand. I guess I was just thinking on the lines of a 'double chocolate fudge' ice cream cone! LOL

Oh my gosh I want him!!!! He is a beautiful (single) dapple. His coloring is much like my little Sophie and Chrissie's handsome Dutch.

single dapple.
Look at my Benjamin and Annie and the others and you can see the difference.
Lots of white to them.
There eyes are shaped differnetly most cases.
He is one gorgeous little man.
He will not last long in foster care.

One thing to remember... Piebalds are mostly white also, but the white comes from a different gene. We have many piebalds on the board also. My Elwood, Mack's Willy, and of course... Beckie Decker's crew!

I also think he's a single dapple. His color is very light in spots, but doesn't appear pure white. What a little cutie.

My little girl is probably a double dapple - she has pure white patches, and they are not symmetrical at all. The white patches in a piebald are more clearly defined and regular... in a DD they are very random. She has none on her eyes or ears, so she is lucky & has no vision/hearing problems.

Luckily, he looks like a dapple, not a double dapple, and will probably not have the health problems associated with being a double dapple. Beautiful boy.

Oh, Barb- it's very easy to confuse heavily dappled chocolate fur with white. In some light, Dutch's dapples DO appear to be white- but they really aren't- not when you can compare them to a double dapple or piebald. :)

Noodles is a chocolate doube dapple- you can see there's a difference between her lighter chocolate spots (the dappling) and the white. Don't worry- lots and lots of people are confused about dapples! They aren't the most common dachsie coat, but I am seeing more and more all the time. If I were crazy enough to think I could manage 4 dachsies on my own- I'd be begging for Yogie. Hmmm... on second thought, I do NOT need double Dutches running around, causing havok! Heheh.

I am supposedly getting a 4-year old male dapple next week into my foster home. He will be available mid-October for adoption. If you're near Atlanta, and looking for a dapple, put in an application!

My Casey is a Dapple...my guess
We were told that he was a Merle ( what's the difference?)
He has lots of colours! He has one green eye(right side) and one blue eye(left side)! Some people ask me if he is blind ( he isn't)
He has 2 white nails ( Middle 2) on his both his right feet.
That's why I wanted him!!!! :circle:

is the same pattern as dapple - they use that term for other breeds (e.g., collies). :)

Cassie had several white toenails when she was a puppy, and white fur on the ends of her paws... but all the white disappeared there and her toenails are now dark like her sister's.

Too bad - the little white nails were easier to clip because we could see the quick better.
