Hello all,

Those of you who read the rescue or grief sections know the story of my loss and my new buddy Frank. Here is a little update on Frank. A week ago we attended the Fire Hydrant Five that is a fund raising run for the local Humane Society (Frank is an alumni of one month). I raced the people race a 5 KM run and then Frank and I ran the doggie 3 KM (1.86 mile) run. Since Frank is just seven months old and I've only had him for a month I didn't expect we would run the race but instead had planned on race walking it. I forgot to tell Frank he couldn't run. We lined up near the back of the back. When the gun went off Frank strained at his leash trying to keep up or pass the other dogs. I tried to tell him he needed to learn how to pace himself but he wouldn't hear of that ahd after he powered his front feet off the ground for about the third time I let him speed up to a full run. He seemed to take a special pleasure in passing the labs and goldens giving them a quick glance as he passed then picking out the next dog up ahead and concentrated on the next goal. While we were far from winning I really hadn't expected Frank to run the whole race and was impressed with how well he help up. We ended up averaging about 8:30/mile so I'd guess we were under an 8:00 pace for much of the middle of the race. Frank wasn't the only dachshund in the race there were three large mini/small tweenie's in the race. A lone black and tan and another pair who were going along with their people one of whom was ridding in a wheel chair with a broken foot. The nine year old dachshund in that pair got to ride part of the way.

We got eliminated form the musical doggie walk in the first round. It was like musical chairs but with carpet squares the dogs had to sit on when the music stopped. Frank decided to respect his elders and let an older setter take the seat they were both near when the music stopped. We ended up having our photo taken since I hadn't been a good daddy and gotten a photo taken. Frank always wants to take a close up look if a camera comes out.

Yeah! I'm so glad to hear that things are still going well. Wow, that's great endurance for such a young little guy. It sounds like Frank is ready for a Dachsie marathon -- he'd surely come out near the top! /ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

I've not heard back from Teresa about the Weenie Roast, but I did email her again just a bit ago. I have weekend classes, so I won't get to attend /ubb/smilies/frown.gif , but I hope to send my hubby & daughter along with Ripley. I told Hans he'll have to take lots of pictures for me... I'd love to see what Frank looks like! /ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Good work Tom and Frank! It sounds like you BOTH got a lot of exercise, had a lot of fun and raised $$$ for a great cause!
I am particularly intrigued by the musical doggie walk.....

It was a fun day for both Frank and I. While he took a good nap when we got home he was very eager to take a walk and visit friends about a mile from our home that evening. There are many fun activities for the dogs that day. Besides the musical carpet squares some of the other available activities include a weenie dunk, a talent contest and an agility course open to all who wanted to give it a try. Since I've never given Frank a hot dog and I'm not sure he knows what one is we didn't enter the weenie dunk which consist of the dog starting off next to the owner attached to a long lead. A start signal sounds and a volunteer about twenty feet away waves a hot dog and drops it into a water container (two sizes one for large and another for small dogs). The dog has to get the hot dog (the volunteer will assist if the dog seems too reluctant to put it's head under water to retrieve the hot dog. The dog is then suppose to return to the owner. This is a timed event with the clock stopping when the dog returns to the owner. The winning dog generally returns with the hot dog still in it's mouth. I'm sure most of our little guys would be among those who hand out at the dunk tank asking for seconds. Frank like the tunnels and jumps on the agility course but wasn't too sure of the a-frame and didn't want to try the teeter.
