I got my Dallas-Ft.Worth Dachshund Club newsletter yesterday. In each issue there is a rescue report with an update on the dogs in the rescue program and a "bio" on the new dogs in the program.

It seems that this past month, they picked up a dachsie that was turned in to one of the local shelters. The owner that turned in the dog was a little old man. He informed the shelter personnel that the dog was trained and knew "moan". The shelter folks assumed that the dog knew how to howl or whine on command. Turns out that the man meant "c'mon", which pronounced with a southern accent sounds like moan. (Athough in the south, moan as in to cry in grief or pain has 2 syllables and is pronounced mo-own. "Mone", as in 'mone, Katie and git in the house, only has one syllable.) All my dogs know 'mone!

BTW, Vincent, the badly injured wire that I posted about a couple of months ago was adopted by a vet tech that works at the hospital that treats the rescue dogs. Some stories do have a happy ending.

I like that one! I was thinking "moan" as in how you moan when you have a stomach or toothache. Now THAT would be a hoot if you could teach a dachsie to moan. No, never mind. They'd run with it and wreak all kinds of havoc if they learned the effect that had on us silly hoomans!

I haven't taught Twix the "moan" command but she moans anyway. And yes, it does have quite an effect on the hooman!! Anytime she is lying on my lap, foot, chest, neck, or wherever she whimpers and moans!! I thought as I read the beginning of the story someone had put a command with that behavior. Too funny!

Since you are from Arkansas you will appreciate the following:
When living in So. Calif. I had a friend from your state visiting. One day she looked out the back window of my home and said, "Oh, you have a lion on your hill". My ranch was in Agoura, about 12 miles from a compound called Jungleland. They had many large cats. Every so often one would escape and their staff and trainers would be combing the rolling hills looking for a lion or tiger. Most of us in the area had horses and other livestock. You can imagine how nervous we would be until the cat was captured. I jumped up when my friend made the statement and rushed to the window. No lion, no tiger. When we finally got it sorted out there was no reason for alarm. She was talking about my clothes line. It too had become a two syllable word, li-on. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif
Funny now, wasn't funny at the time.
Now that I am in NC, there is even more room for misinterpretation!
