Happy Thanksgiving! We aren't doing Canadian Thanksgiving this year, we tend to alternate which Thanksgiving we celebrate since I don't really feel like doing three big meals in 3 months (Canadian, then US, then Christmas) although some years I do all three. My MIL would scowl at that, haha, she has a housefull of company in Newfoundland for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. This year my SIL is coming from BC to celebrate American Thanksgiving with us so I will most likely do a simple dinner tomorrow night, most likely grilled lamb chops. Thanks for sharing with us. There are so many things we have to be thankful for and spend so little time sharing them. Have a wonderful day!!!

Is there a traditional meal associated with this day, like our American turkey dinner?

Bubble gum is a wonderful thing to be thankful for. :D

That's interesting, because tomorrow is columbus day here in the US. Columbus day is not a big holiday here, but there is no mail service. :(

It's pretty much like the American Thanksgiving, it was started in Newfoundland in the mid 1500's, it is to celebrate the harvest and I guess like any other Holiday, traditional meals vary from family to family. I don't particularly like to hvae turkey in November and again in December, so I don't normally do a turkey for American thanksgiving although this year I will cuz we have company. I will normally do a duck or something less involved. Then who knows what I'll decide for Christmas, maybe a duck. Seeing hubby is a Newfie, we celebrate Canadian and then American Thanksgiving then Christmas. I don't do a big meal for all, unless we have company, but do try to do something special.

:) Columbus Day is a holiday for those of us working at the VA, so I will celebrate. Thank you, Mr. Columbus. :appl:

Not quite as festive as Thanksgiving...

It used to be a holiday to my company but this year we are working and getting off the day after our Thanksgiving. I rather go shopping on Black Friday then be at work!

Plus, I still took off tomorrow. Big mid-term tomorrow night - 11 chapters on System Engineering. Ugh! :faint:

Thanks so much for the good wishes folks! I'm actually through my turkey coma now..and ready to start my Thanksgiving Day annual house chores (test the furnace, drain the outside taps, do winter prep on garden and house).

We do celebrate thanksgiving in a similar style to the US (just a month earlier obviously), but what the meal is varies from region to region. Turkey is largely the staple, but in Quebec and further north it's not unusual to have duck, goose or other game. Newfoundland has dressing (as opposed to stuffing) of breadcrumbs and savory (dry as a bone, but they love it), Quebec usually does wild rice based stuffing, Ontario and west does bread stuffing and BC...who knows what they do out there..probably eat salmon and smoke pot (JUST KIDDING!!!).

I'm Thankful for so much this year...the continuing health of my family, the love and support of those around me and the wonder of my country. This was all brought home in high relief recently - the Canadian Navy lost a sailor to a fire on the sub Chicoutimi. That sailor's body was brought home to his family in Halifax yesterday to a full navy funeral - what made this even more poignent for me...is that sailor shares the same name as my husband.

Bubble Gum - Yummy, sweet, you can blow bubbles! What an invention. We have traditional Thanksgiving Fare. Turkey & the trimmings. Pumpkin Pie, Yam, Pecan & Apricot casserole etc.

You see having Thanksgiving in October rather than November gives us ladies some time to work off the extra calories!!!

Great Post Juliette,

We too have so much to be thankful for...family, our heath (especially since I got my great no more cancer news in August!) and of course our two fur babies who bring so much love and happiness to our lives every day.

We too do the "traditional" Ontario Thanksgiving on Sunday so our turkey pheromones have a day to digest.

Back to sleep I go :snoopy:

And a big Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canucks!

:D
