Ok, I think it's time to start another topic about our furkid's strange behavior. Mickey does some things, and I just have to ask if they are particular to just him, or to all dachsies, or to dogs in general.
1) When Mickey is out in the sunshine, he squints! He LOVES to lay out in the sun, but whenever he's outside, he squints. It looks like he's half falling asleep, but he's just squinting. I think he needs a pair of doggie sunglasses. Does anyone else's dog squint?
2) Mickey is a big burper. I've never really heard a dog burp until Mickey came along. Whenever he eats or drinks, he'll wait for a minute or two, and then he'll let out a big ole burp! Baaaaappp! /ubb/smilies/eek.gif We can almost time it! And for being a dog of rather small stature, he can really let one rip! Do your doggies burp too?
I'd love to hear everyone else's fun oddities with their pooches!

Oh yeah /ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif Owen burps!! And they are strongly fragrant since he's been on the BARF diet seeing as there is fresh raw garlic in it. He generally gets right next to me or postitions himself on my lap in full stretch mode and I pat him on the back and he burps like a baby.
Owen just loves to be in the sun... He plops in the middle of the grass, all but falling onto his side and passes out. After about 10 minutes on his side, he rolls to his back and works the sun on his tummy, then about 10 mins later, he rolls to his other side. He's very good at getting even sun exposure!!

Pluto follows the sun in the house, almost like a cat. /ubb/smilies/cool.gif He finds a patch of sunlight and moves with it as it comes in the window.
Sometimes when I walk Pluto he finds a patch of grass or some soil area and will circle around like he's ready to do his business and then he lays down, like he's ready for a nap. /ubb/smilies/asleep.gif Pretty weird, huh?

Gretchen is definitely the burp-master at our house. She burps so loud we just have to laugh /ubb/smilies/laugh.gif
My dear departed Molly /ubb/smilies/angel.gif used to squint. As a matter of fact, I have a really good picture of her outside squinting and smiling really big for the camera. (I'd show you if I knew how to post it) I use it for my wallpaper on my computer to remember her by! /ubb/smilies/kfrown.gif I surely miss that girl.
Now Annie....she sits (if you can call it that) with her back legs stretched out behind her. It looks really funny because the front of her body is standing up and the back half is laying down!

I have one squinter and one burper - Penny squints into the sun - my daughter hates it because she thinks it "makes Penny look like she's old and going blind". I never thought much about it until Maggie came to live with us and I noticed that she does NOT squint! Penny and I stood there squinting at her and wondering about HER vision! /ubb/smilies/smile.gif (ummmm....if you would like to SEE my sweet Penny squinting into the sun, you can check out 'Maggie & Penny' at http://www.dachshund.bc.ca/mainpage.html )
Maggie burps quite often, but in a dainty, ladylike way of course. /ubb/smilies/wink.gif Despite her frequent gassy episodes, I don't recall EVER hearing Penny burp..........it's always the other end we hear! /ubb/smilies/blushie.gif
Both Maggie and Penny have the little habit of putting one paw on my foot if I insist that they "sit" next to me when there are a lot of people around. (I've always thought it was a security thing - kind of like a child holding onto Mom or Dad's hand) Penny just does the little foot thing, but Maggie also rests her head on my leg - especially if there are other doggies around!
Any other 'hand holding' dachsies out there?

Hiya! Wotan is a squinter when he first wakes up in the morning. He crawls out from under his couch blankie and looks like he need that big cup of coffee instead of me...
I used to burp him when he was smaller, just like a baby.../ubb/smilies/biggrin.gifText

My Ginger is both the "sqinter" and the "burber". Bailey also loves the sun, but he does not do the squint thing.
Amy, nothing like a burper on a fresh garlic diet/ubb/smilies/uh-oh.gif

Dolly could hold her own in any burping contest. To THANK me for giving her a yummy breakfast or din din, she comes right up to my face and lets it RIP!!! Then she goes to her papa and lets HIM know how how much she enjoyed her meal.

BUUUUURP! My compliments to the chef!

Yes, all my three dachsies squint, when the sun is shining and Miss Piggy and Little Princess argue who may lay in the second best spot in the sun. The best one belongs to their mom Helga, of course. I just wish we had more sunshine, but they have promised rain for the next three days /ubb/smilies/frown.gif

I am crackin up here!/ubb/smilies/laugh.gif You mean your weiners burp out LOUD?? How come Freddie doesn't? His burps are barely noticable./ubb/smilies/dorky.gif But boy oh boy he can't hide his farts, they're the silent-but-deadly ones!/ubb/smilies/uh-oh.gif He also loves the sun and squints too./ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Rudy is a squinting Sunbather too. He looks so cute, but it makes me worry about his eyes. I'm sure sun damage is one of the major reasons dogs get cataracts as it is for humans. Oh well, its not like it would be practical (or even possible for many) for Dogs to wear sunglasses.
he does burp sometimes too, but isn't an everyday thing.

My mom's 2 mini longs squint. The wires don't seem to do it as much. Wheeler is the champion belcher.
My old Liza, bless her heart, was the worst at farting. She would be laying on her back at the foot of my mom's chair and suddenly there would be this horrible smell /ubb/smilies/sick.gif. You would look down at her and she would have this little smile on her face, sort of an Ahhh relief! look. She went to the Bridge last summer at age 15. /ubb/smilies/angel.gif Do you think that in Dog Heaven, their farts don't stink?

Henry will move around the house to catch the best sun spots to bask in....
Henry occassionally farts, but when he does he gets as far away from it as possible. He hates the smell. When he was just a puppy, he was sleeping on his pillow while we were visiting my mother. My mother and I were talking and all of a sudden we heard this loud fart! The little 3 pound puppy had let it rip in his sleep. That was the only time he ever farted audilbly in his 2 1/2 years.
Jakey on the other hand loves his farts. He wants everyone to know his big accomplishments and will even try to roll around in them! Typical boy!
Should we even start on teh husbands? The dogs are nothing in comparison.

I just made Mickey a fried egg in some olive oil this morning for breakfast. I've been doing that a few times a week to help with his coat, and it really does seem to help. But anyway, after he chowed down his egg, yep, you guessed it....BAAAAAPPPP! I looked down at him with a feigned surprise and he looked rather content with himself!
Mickey doesn't fart too much. But when we go on long trips to visit relatives, he seems to do it then, because he's all hyped up with the trip. We'll try to get him to lay down and sleep for most of the trip, which he usually does. But he farts in his sleep! My husband and I will get a whiff of something really nasty...something that will curl the hair in one's nose. Then, we'll look at one another to rule out that it wasn't either of US who made that smell, and then we'll look back at the culprit. We then have to open the window to air out the car. The sound of the open window and air rushing in is the only thing that will wake Mickey up. The rancid smell he creates doesn't wake him up, only the wind. He'll look up like "Huh? What? Why are you guys looking at my like that?"
On days like this he gets a certain nickname, "TB", for "Toxic Butt"! /ubb/smilies/dorky.gif

I did notice some odd behavior in Wotan- I had to think about it first though.
Whenever I pet him up on my chest, he yawns deeply-this releases a nasty, fishy death breath. Ick. Never fails- I've tried this over and over and still that YAWN, right in my face.
Dukey's Mom
06-08-2000, 01:17 PM
Oh boy, I could have a field day with this. Ok, Dukey loves his sun and squints. His funny habit is when he knows I won't give in to something, he sighs, it's the funniest thing!
Dottie, when she wants something, will sit on the side of her couch , looking very majestic, and she bats her eyes, I'm not kidding, we call it her "Queen" mode.
Maggie, well, poor Maggie, she just barks at my husband. The Rog, he's a funny little mop. When he is worn out, in 2 seconds he will drop to the floor, completely flat, I mean back legs straight back, front legs straight out front. The he will go to sleep like that!
Then we have Sammy who barks like a seal. Whats funny with him, when he's happy or excited, he starts to wiggle his tail and then his whole body catches up. My honey calls him The Great Giggly Wiggly!
Funny the habits our little furkids have.

Mickey likes to lay fully extended too...that's his favorite way to lay. He just kicks those little ole' legs out behind him, and whew, is he ready for some serious snoozing! It seems like it would hurt, like he's overextended, but he always does it, so I guess it can't hurt him.
His other favorite sleep position is completely on his back, all fours sticking out in the air! He has to be really tired or relaxed in order to do this though. And when he sleeps on his back, he usually snores...really loud!
One other thing, sometimes when Mick is sleeping he starts making funny noises and will twitch. I assume he's dreaming, because he's really sacked out! All of a sudden you'll just hear these little yips coming from him. You'll look over and he's twitching away, and still yipping. It's so funny. We just chuckle softly to ourselves...we'd hate to wake him.
He makes me laugh every single day!

This morning was dark blue and wet. Wotan wouldn't get out from under his blankie even to stick his nose out the door to do his usual "weewee".
He circled a few times then grunted, laying down again. After a few minutes, all I could see were these two little tan and black back feeties sticking up out of the covers. The rest of him was completely out of sight!
/ubb/smilies/redface.gif
I had to pick him up and carry him out into the rain and that was NOTapprecitated by his Royal Highness.

What a beautiful baby Molly was! I hope she found my Buddy, so they can play together!

Molly is a beauty. She, Buddy, and Punkin are probably playing together wondering why we play on these "puters" so much!
Punkin loved basking in the sun...extended as far as she could stretch. Josephine is a burper, and her stomach is constantly making gurgly noises. She also snores louder than anything I have ever heard. I sleep with my pillow over my head, but it still doesn't cover her snores! Anyone else got a snorer? I would put her on the floor, but I can't sleep without her!

V burps too and her farts are really lethal. But that's not the only weird things that she does. She's such a strange littel hound.
While I've heard other doxy owners talk about the licking factor, V is the only one that I know of that will start off licking your arm and then grab it in her mouth and suck on it. Her eyes kinda get a far-away look in them when she does this and she doesn't respond to anything like calling her, snapping your fingers ect.
She also likes to "fetch" my fishing cork when I take her out fishing with me. If I miss a couple of stikes, she gets really upset. You can see her tensing up, she starts shaking and barking and then the next thing you know she's in the water after the cork.
Actually she just learned how to swim like a normal dog a couple of years ago. Before she used to swim upside down.
If she doesn't get her way she will stamp her front feet and let out a huff/sigh until you either give in or you fall in the floor laughing at her.

Oscar does the arm sucking thing too!! It drives us nuts but makes him so happy. Sometimes he falls alseep with an arm in his mouth. He's a super-licker. Freud would say he's stuck in the 'oral' stage. A behaviourist said that we should stop Oscar from arm sucking because he's treating us like a toy but I think it just comforts him.
Other strange things... Frankie will cry and cry and cry to be put in the bathtub. He'll stay in there for hours. No water though, please.
Oscar likes to pick up things underwater. He dunks his head under and comes up snorffling. Over and over and over again.
Oscar spends half the time in the park kicking up grass to show how tough he is. Like a little bull. Everyone laughs at him (including the other dogs).
No real farting problems. Not much squinting. They burp after every meal -- in your face if possible.
