View Full Version : What BRAND of Dog Food do you use?
FOREVER A DAXIE

Lot of stuff under feeding. I thought I'd do a poll to see what brand is the most popular.
We are feeding Royal Canin right now but we were on Wellness.
**You can make more than ONE choice**
I've put the most popular brands I believe DBB'rs use.
I use Wellness F&P, Eukanuba Low-Residue and Purina's OM.

My girls were raised on raw and that's the only thing they consider food :dizzy: I switch between beef, chicken and turkey. They seem to like turkey the best at the moment. If I feed a meat that has no veggies, I add Dr. Harvey's flakes.

We're using Wellness Simple Solutions and have had no bile barfies, Tasha's regrown a lot of hair behind her ears, on her tummy, and along her neck, and is less itchy.
And, the big benefit--we're not had her anal glands expressed since October! Though she's going in for a physical on Sunday and I'll ask them to see if they're full as she's been doing a bit of licking. But we were going every 3-4 weeks so its really helped!!! :D

I am a horrible mom, I feed my guys pedigree (I know I know) I am going to switch when the puppies are gone as I have one more bag of puppy chow that I feed to all of them. After that I dont' know what I will change them to. I need to find out what they have at the pet store.

Nah...not a horrible Mom. I did the same thing. I truly know some people who feed their pups Ole Roy or whatever and that dog has lived to be 15 years old. *I* wouldn't do that, but, hey, it is all they can afford. And that dog is spoiled with lots of love and attention. You do what you can with the resources you have. I am thankful I can buy a higher quality food without it hurting (too much anyway ;) ).

a fast food/junk food diet for people. A lot of people you know eat that way their entire lives (where the only vegetables are french fries, for instance) and they will live to be 90; others won't. It's not being a bad mom or a cruel person to give them Pedigree (my girls were on it too when we got them). However, your pups can't choose, so you do a little research and make the best choices you can for them.

I feed raw food to mine. Amanda gets some kibble because it helps her digestion. I give her Wysong Maintenance diet, but only a little. Mostly they get Nature's Variety frozen pre mix. They all seem to do really well on it and live to a ripe old age. The last dachsie I lost was past 16 and Amanda is also past 16 and still going! It seems to work.

My guys are on IVD, a veterinary diet, due to Baxter's food allergies. I don't know if it's really high quality or not, but it is growing his hair back in and he loves it. Bailey is on the same because it's easier than two different foods. I'd like to try Wellness Simple Solutions, but we're doing so well on IVD, I'm hesitant to change...........

I feed mine mostly Nutro. Norby gets Nutro senior-low activity. He is on a diet trying to get the weight off his hiney! Kali gets the regular Nutro (small kibble) and the gal I got her from mixed a bit of pedigree wet food (the pouches) on her dry. I still do that, but am trying to move over to something different.
For treats they get Mother Hubbard biscuits or Natural Balance rolled food cut into small pieces. They also LOVE raw baby carrots and green beans. On a funny note, when I can green beans in the summer/fall time, Norby parks under the table when I am snapping them and SCARFS! Silly Norby. :circle:

for my gang. They all like it and I have seen firsthand what it can do for a bad coat. Mom put Molly on it straight away and her coat was a mess. Didn't take long and the hair on her ears and all her little bald spots had all filled in. She shines now. My vet recommends Nutro also.

Duffer is on this food that I have to get from the vets. He was still having allergy problems when he was on the Wellness. I've switched the others over to Nutro lamb/rice small bites and they love it. Dickens wouldn't eat any puppy food at all - had to have what the others were eating. At supper time I mix in some veg. broth or pumpkin, some tin tomatoes - anything like that.

I have just started feeding Canidae. We will see how it goes. I may add some raw diet occasionally as well. I have just found out about a local natural pet food store. They deliver too, they make their own barf diet and have Leg-O-Lamb available for purchase as well. They have a variety of kibbles available, including some that uses corn but no preservatives. I think they try to meet everyones needs. I wanted to go with a more "meat" kibble. Canidae apears to be a really good food. My pups are not real fond of it yet. I did buy some Canidae canned food, but I would rather not use it unless I have to. I don't want softer stools. Anyway, I usually "mix" foods, but I am doing the straight Canidae. I wonder how many pounds I will go through in a month :D

Olga,
Try adding the adult CS in with the puppy formula. They should like it just fine. I fed CS for a year and both of mine loved it but it wasn't a good match for Mitch. If they like it it will certainly save you time and money driving around for 3 different foods. Just a thought.

We are trying different foods in 20-40 pound bags (2-4 weeks supply) to see how it effects the different dogs differently.
One food helped Dred's allergies and made Piper's coat gorgeous, but didn't do a thing for Cory. One food made Cory's coat fall out, and one foog made Dred's allergies worse. Piper seems to be able to handle anything.
I'm trying to find one food for them all, it's easier that way for me, in case one leaves some food, the others don't have to worry about it having an adverse effect on them.
I'm guessing that eventually Piper and Dred will be fed one food, the vegetarian one by Nature's Recipe (or was it Balance?), and Cory one food that helps his coat.
We tried the Flint River Fish 'N Chips, and NO ONE liked that. I thought it would help their coats with all the fish oil. They ate it, but only when they were starving. Even Pi wouldn't eat it voluntarily.
Any other suggestions for a really dry rough coat created by years of being locked in a cage with horrible food, no vet care, and no human contact? And for one with severe allergies.
Who's got the link for the database of pet foods? I have NO idea what to search for on the net! I wanna look up the Pinacle food, any stories on it?

Currently, I am feeding Willy (AM) -3 tsp plain yogurt w/oatmeal & bananas (PM) -a combination of Royal Canine/Evo. I mix it with a small amount rice w/sardines--sprinkled- w/Missing Link supplement -500mg Ester C, Vitamine E 400 I.U. This seems to be working--his energy level, weight, and coat are all good, but I want to try Natural Balance & Wellness instead of the Royal Canine eventually (but still mixed w/EVO).
This is a 4 paws up for him--he loves it. He is right under my feet while I am fixing it.

I feed a brand by PMI, It's called Exclusive. It's quite comparable to Nutro Natural Choice. I know there are many many better foods out there, but it the only food my Border Collie did REALLY well on. The only really high quality food I didn't try with her was Canidae, because she was allergic to lamb. Occasionally I'll decide to switch to something else, but I always go back to the Exclusive. Money is kind of an issue right now anyway, so they're stuck with it ;). About twice a week they get a home cooked meal as well.

Jordan,
There must be 100 foods better than Science Diet. (Hey my hubby is a Vet too and he sells it, you know why? Because it was already established in his clinic when he bought it and it is just easier) He is actuallt not even against using it and when I did feed it, my dogs did fine on it and it was better than some of the other non brand name foods, but that doesn't mean it is really the best food or anywhere near being the healthiest. I haven't been feeding it for YEARS, which at first upset him quite a bit. I started mixing several different premium brands, usually 3 different kinds at a time. Last February I did some research and changed my ways. I switched ALL of my dogs over to Canidae. I have now been feeding it for 1 year and I am happy with it and even my husband has noticed the changes in the dogs, even commented on it. It is for all life stages so even babies get weened to it. (soaked with water to become a gruel, initially I add goats milk to it, then as they get older, just soak it in water, then eventually I totally ween them to dry. My problem right now is I think they could eat dry if the bites were smaller, so I am going to still soak the canidae and offer them that and also offer them Royal Canin puppy formula for dachshunds in dry. In a few weeks they will be able to manage the Canidae chunks dry and then they will be switched to that permanently. 98% of my dogs are free fed. That may suprise numerous people but only 4 of them need to be fed specific amounts to keep them in weight. Two of them was free fed prior to going to a different home and returned in excessive overweght status, and both were adults when they left and free fed at that time. Now though, they think they are starving and like to guard and hoard food, so now they have to be crated to eat. Anyway, my friends will come over and because the food is just sitting out, their dogs eat it, no diarrhea from changing the food and they all love it. I have been real happy with it. Anyway, there are a list of good, natural diets, even in kibble form with human grade ingredients used to make it and you would have numerous choices. Yes it is more expensive to buy the Natural healthy brands, but it also your dogs overall health we are talking about here. While some dogs can live a good life for 15+ years on low quality dog foods, MANY dogs will display problems, obtain allergies...etc. Of course the choice is yours, but IMO there are a LOT of diets better than Science Diet.

I feed Pinnacle Duck and Potato to the big guys, and Solid Gold Whee Bits to Maisie. I mix it with "Neura" canned food. (95% meat), ProZyme (digestive enzymes), and a couple of times a week I add some "home-cooking" to the food. (i.e. chicken, turkey, beef, fish......etc.; organic joghurt; egg-yolk; cottage cheese.......etc.)
I will not feed anything that contains corn or Vit. K-3. Corn is a major allergy inducer, and Vit. K3 is known for having caused renal failure. :(
It's important to me, that the first ingredients in a dog-food are MEAT, not fillers.

After reading all the posts we decided it was time for a change to a higher quality food. Josh has dry skin and hopefully this will help. We tried Nutro at the suggestion of our trainer and both Josh and Auggie vomitted every day although their coats looked good. I went to the website that rated the foods- can't think what it was now- and we picked several that were rated A or A+ and started there. We bought some Authority Lamb and Vegetables yesterday and started feeding it mixed with old food last night and then this morning. So far so good and they do seem to like it. We started all three of them on it as Gabe is now about 1 year old.

Hi Paul,
sounds as if you have no choice. Unless: Is there a COSTCO near where you live ? The Kirkland brand is way better than Purina ONE and probably even cheaper. The removed the Vit. K3 from their formula and now it's actually not all that bad. My guys like it. :D

No, there is NOTHING near to me. There is the Petco in Bangor, that's it. I have tried many of the "more natural foods" and Kebo will not eat them. JOhanna has a very sensitive stomach as well, and I don't like to change their diet too much. Whenever I changed, Kebo would be throwing up all day all over the place. Petco is the only place within 300 miles of me, so I am stuck with going there.

As I'm always looking for input on diet, I thought I'd pop in on this older thread. I read all the way thru it and, before I post about Belle's diet, I have to tell you that I am absolutely amazed that I've not seen one "OMG that food sucks" reply to any of the posts...which is the norm I've gotten at a few other message boards. Makes me nervous to post about Belle's diet...but...
Anyhoo - Belle is on Pro Plan. When we got her, she came with a big bag of Old Roy and cans of something else. Can't remember what they were. It took us a while to get her switched over from the Old Roy to the Pro Plan Lamb/Rice.
I've played with her food a bit in the last year with samples I get from the local feed store. I usually give her a week or so with the other food mixed in. 9 xs out of 10 she eats around the new stuff and leaves it.
I noticed that one person here did a successful switch from Pro Plan to something else...so I know it's possible.
She's a morning/evening mealtime girl with a couple of snacks (unless there's lettuce at lunch) during the day.

When Maisy came to us, she was on Beneful at the breeders, which we kept her on for the first few weeks until she adjusted to her new surroundings. I asked at the pet store for some suggestions, and the person I spoke with suggested Nutro, which helped a great deal with her dandruff. When we got Larry, he was on Blue Seal farm dog food, so we immediately switched him to Nutro. However, soon after joining these boards and reading more heavily about nutrition, I decided to switch them to Wellness. Right now they are eating a 50/50 mix of Nutro and Wellness. I'm going to up that to 25/75 this weekend.

I feed Nature's Variety, all three types: kibble, canned and raw, and mix all three. They love it! It's expensive, but at least I don't have to worry about my kids getting sick or dying because of tainted food.

I was feeding Natural Balance, but with Sophie's 2 bladder infections the vet insists that I feed her/both Iams...So I really didn't want to feed them Iams (and I didn't switch to Iams the first time she got her bladder infection/thinking the vet was crazy) but it's been 2 months and nothing yet/cross your fingers :crsfnger:

wow, what a variety of brands everyone feeds!
nina has been on canidae als and loved it, but the canidae recipes have just changed and many pups are reporting they are now unhappy.
we are in the midst of transitioning to orijen puppy, its great stuff.
here is a good link for those interested in comparisons of different brands in the review section; i don't see it listed on this thread: http://dogfoodanalysis.com/

ORIJEN is really good, just keep a eye on portions, the calories in it are high may be higher than your other food and they may gain weight.

My 13 year old beagle Jessie has major allergy problems and tends to be a bit overweight. I mix these two together am and pm and she is doing great. No more toe chomping!!! Nathan (my 3 year old) b/t tweenie eats the same but I add 2 tsp. of The Wholisitc Pet Joiint Mobility 2x a day to help (hopefully) with his back issues. He loves it too!

I make all of Ringo's food myself, so there is no brand name... it's just organic, human grade food, like hamburger, fruits and veggies (among other things)

I feed Kirkland signature. Used to feed awful foods like Beneful and other Purina brands a few years ago. So glad we made the switch to a better food. All the dogs are doing really good on it.
Lucy (Chihuahua) eats Innova canned, and Raw. She is hard to keep weight on, and extremely picky. She will often change her favorites, so we switch between Kirkland canned, innova canned, and CS canned. Occasionally she has to have Nutrical.
Peanut (Chi/Min pin mix) will NOT eat dry or canned dog food. He will only eat human food, and Purina moist and meaty. Ick. He is extremely picky. Also, his coat is AMAZING on moist and meaty. I can't believe I can even say that. His tears stains are non existant (On higher quality dried kibbles, that he picks at, he has horrible tear stains). His coat is soft and silky, and he has a good weight. He allows himself to get emaciated like Lucy, so we feed what he wants to eat (And what he does good on!)
