Can anyone help me?? I have two black & tan babies and my youngest is losing his hair on his underbelly and the top of his head. He has been to the vet to check for hypothyroidism and allergies and the tests came back negative. It started with a rash, which is gone now thanks to meds, but his hair is not growing back. Any ideas?

Welcome Skeeter & Paxton :wavey: What are you feeding your furbabies? It could be something as simple as what they are eating. Bella and Cricket had thinning hair on their underbelly and chest, but I have since started w/Omega salmon oil and have noticed a difference almost immediately. There are lots of great people on this board who are much more experienced w/this and will be happy to help you out. Good luck and welcome. I look forward to hearing more about your two. :hugs1:

I just wanted to say WELCOME to our board.

I haven't had any experience with hair loss but I have heard it can be food allergy related.

I don't know if this helps any but Oliver's ears and his underbelly were balding when I got him. I switched his food (I didn't know what he'd been eating), so I had to, and I noticed that within a month he started growing his hair back.

But..I also noticed that even though he's not a great shedder..he shed like crazy when we went to the vets. Stress.

Oh yes and not to forget...Welcome to the Board! Great place to visit and post pictures? :D

Welcome to the board! And thanks for the question--thought I don't have an answer, I've had a similar experience with my smooth red tweenie Tasha. When we adopted her she had an ear infection and was missing a lot of fur around her ears from scratching. I think maybe a little grew back, but not all of it. She's been on Wellness for a month, but that does not seem to have made a difference. I've ordered some salmon oil from Sitstay.com so perhaps that will do the trick.

:wavey: Hi and Welcome to the board. :)

Aplopecia is common in Dachshunds, if this is the case there is no cure. Some Dachsie's have it more than others, another name is pattern baldness. However, if it is something else you will probably have success with a change in diet and adding supplements. Some members have used Avo-Derm with good results and 100% Salmon Oil is also good supplement. Look forward to hearing more about your furbabies. Mr. Butters developed alopecia around 6 months old! The vet said that they'd never seen such a bad case at such a young age! Nothing seems to work, but I love him anyways!

When I first went to my new/current vet - she was amazed that Rosco, my smooth, had hair on his belly. She said that it is extremely common for dachsies to have bald bellies. I'm not sure about the head though.

Could it be some sort of mange?? Also - if there was a rash there, maybe it just hasn't had enough time to grow back. I know that my dogs have all taken quite a while for their hair to grow back after they get spayed.

Ask for a skin scrape for mites. Could be allegies as well.

Mr. Butters alopecia extends to his head. The backs of his ears and the face just before the ears is bald. Usually dachshunds develop either the belly or the ears, rarely both. He has both. My bald little man.

I'm going through this exact thing with my black and tan right now. We're just beginning a food trial for him - the vet thinks it is likely food allergies. He does show other signs of allergies that have not responded to treatment, so we're trying this next. She says if it is food allergies, his hair will all grow back. I'll let you know!

Have him checked for a bacteria infection of the skin....if left untreated, it can lead to pussing open sores. My little Clifford gets it often and loses his hair. Usually on his belly, then his head and it would spread if I didn't have him seen. They give him an antibiotic and its clears up within two weeks.....then he goes back out and catches it six months later....vet says he prone to it.
