I just thought up a wonderful idea for all of us darling dachsie owners. You'll really love this one. I was at PetCo and Petsmart and was looking at doggie coats and warmies for our cutie. They are expensive i thought to myself so I thought I'd like to make one but the patterns are usually for dogs that have bigger chests then our dachsies have. So being the ballet teacher that I am I took one of my leg warmers and slipped it over Schnitzel's head and body and cut out two holes for the front legs and Viola! A perfect fit and she is snug as a bug. You can get the warmers at any dance shop. About $i0. You gotta try it cuz the fit you will find is purfect. The leg warmer to get is the calf leg warmers. I had an old one of mine so I used that one. Hope it works out for you guys. We live in Las Vegas it went from in the 100's to freezing so as you all know they lay there and shiver and it breaks your heart. Love Nikki
Hi Nikki,
What a great idea! I'll have to try that . . . our two Dachsie's have never liked any coats we've been able to find and I'm guessing the bad fit had a lot to do with it. Thanks for the tip!
Now let's see where did I put my ballet warmers? http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

That is such a great idea! We need to be creative to keep our doxies warm.

Nikki, that is BRILLIANT! I just happen to have a bag of assorted old leg warmers in my closet, from my jazz dance days. Couldn't bear to throw them out--too many nice memories, etc. But they are utterly useless!
Or so I thought! Can't wait to run home and try them on the wieners!
This is better than Heloise! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif Thanks a million!!!

Nikki, this is hysterical. Looks like at least 2 of us are rummaging around in the back of our closets. It wasn't sentimentality that had me saving mine, I was simply delusional. Thought any day now I would be using them in rehearsal. Hasn't happened in 5 years.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/blah.gif
Now, thanks to you, I have a really good use for them.
Too old for the chorus, too young for the rocking chair,

I "made" little coats out of sweat pant legs. The gathered ankle is the neck hole. I cut holes for their front legs and cut away the bottom of the area below the deep chest -so they can potty. the top fits like a sweater, but from the end of the rib cage down, it fits like a horse-blanket sytle coat. CHEAP FAST and EASY! I needed them quickly when we had a cold snap a few weeks ago.
I am sewing polar fleece (real) coats too though. I made the pattern myself. It was pretty easy. I just based it on a horse-blanket style coat that didn't fit. I traced it on paper and jsut kept altering the pattern til it did fit.

You people are just too creative! I'm afraid it's out to the store for me, as my leg warmers went to the garage sale years ago. It IS a terrific idea! My son had an elastic knee brace and it fit over Otis's head like a cute little scarf/hat. We took pictures and if he didn't look happy, he DID look cute! Thanks for the great ideas.

Hey, Otis's Mom! Great minds think alike! I made Peaches a whole set of "headwarmers" out of old cotton jock socks! She has almost no hair on her ears, so she needs something in the really cold weather.
If you take a pic of Otis in his, I'll take one of Peaches in hers and we can ask Jean or Mark to post them side by side in the photo album!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

I just did the same thing with a sweat shirt sleave. I just cut the end towards the chest at an angle to Mr. Happy has a clear shot.<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm2.gif" border=0>

I did the same thing as you did, AD. Twix looks so cute in her new fangled clothes. My nephew came over and wanted to know why she was wearin' a costume!! She actually looks like she has on a little dress and I love it. AD, did you leave the cuff on Aug's coat? I did and it makes a great turtleneck for Twix. Do you guys leave their coats on all the time? I have never had a doggie wear a coat before so just wondering what everyone else does.
