I just hate this--it seems that everything is dangerous, bad for you, bad for the environment, sure to result in certain death, etc. But knowing how many of us on the board have dogs who are obsessed with the WGB, I felt I had to pass this on.

I received an e-mail today from a friend of one of my adopters. Their wheaten terrier died last week after swallowing one of the noisemakers in the WGB. It isn't the object itself that caused the problem--it is the fact that the noisemaker is coated with zinc. The poor dog died of zinc poisoning.

So if any of your dogs chew the WGB, as well as roll it around, you know what you have to do. Angie, one of my boss's dogs, loves the thing beyond all reason. We threw it away today.... http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/crying.gif

Good thing you said that, I was thinking about buying Timber one of those toys. Timber chews all of his toys, and has eaten parts of plush toys and plastic frisbees.

OMG! That's horrible. I'm so sorry they lost their pup. Why would manufactureres put zinc-coated anything in a kids toy? It's like if a dog eats pennies---same thing: zinc poisoning. I never allow my pups to have toys unsupervised, except their kongs. Thanks for the heads-up Pamela, and my sympathies to your friends.

Just a note anyone who may have a old Kennel Cab or Kennel Air crate the bolts and the screw on pieces are made of zinc also.Back in the late "70's" a really great show and stud dog (a standard smooth) was lost to eating one of these and dying of zinc poisioning. So if you have a older crate and your dog may nibble on it at times beware check those bolts and buy the new ones to replace the old zinc ones.
