Snickers is a black/tan long hair and she's about 10 months old. She is pretty hairy, but how long before her coat get's that long feathery look? I was just wondering. Her coat is a really pretty black, very shinny and soft. Was just wondering. Thanks! :D

It's different for each dachshund. Some can take up to 2 years. Schnitzel is 18 months and she doesn't have the coat like others I've seen. I'm chalking it up to bad breeding (pet store pup). I'm sure the others will have better advice for you. :)

Ruben apparently has more/longer hair that the others here on the board. Take a look at the most recent Ruben and Trenyce pics in the brag book. At 16 months, when he holds his tail straight out, his hair reaches the floor. I've had his butt hair cut at a year, and I can see it needs cutting again. I'd say the hair on his sides is at least 4 inches long, but his belly hair isn't yet long,

My Tristan was poorly bred, but had a long coat (kind of fuzzy). Angel and Cassie are 18 months and still do not have long coats. We LOVE their coats because they don't get very tangled. Their parents are both smooths (but carry the allele for LH) and their other sister was a smooth. Supposedly, this doesn't always predict coat length, though. Their coats are very healthy... just not very long except ears and tails.
Cassie is much fluffier in general. Angel looks like Tammara's Ruben in face and ears... but he has about 4 times more fur. :D

When I first thought about getting a longhair, I asked around about that very thing! I was told, "It generally takes about two years." Brekke was two and still didn't have much long hair - except her head and ears. Then people began saying, "Well, some don't get it until they are three." Sure enough, Brekke was almost three befroe she had her "full coat". It is fluffy and pouffier than many lhs, but it is long and beautiful! Julia B.

Thanks for the information. Snickers ears are pretty hairy and the coat on her back is getting wavey, it's about inch and a half in length. She has just had her first heat and she is looking soo pretty, long and sleek. When she has a bath, her black coat is so shiny...boy I need to get out the digital camera and get some pictures and figure out how to post them.
