Every year Canada hosts one of the biggest agricultural fairs in the world. The foreigners come pouring in to Toronto for this one. The Royal Winter Fair is a big deal. Everything from goats to horses, oh, and dogs of course! It's that time of the year again and the fair will last until the end of the day on Saturday, November 13th. (It's pretty dead on Sunday with everyone packing up.)

I have worked the RWF in some capacity for the past 15 years. This year I'm going as a tourist, however, I am proud to say that I will be helping man the Canadian Dachshund Rescue Booth on Friday. This is one of the biggest events for CDR as it raises money to help fund many of our rescues and of course the high cost of veterinary fees.

The money we earn there has the potential to make a huge difference in our rescued dogs' healths. Remember those pics I asked you for a while ago? Well, the printer opted to use a diagram instead for the magnetic fridge note pads with the caption..."until there are none...rescue one". He felt that a real pic would make people think that dachshunds were all the same as what was depicted on the pad. He made 500 pads for me (they are adorable) and all were donated to CDR for their fundraising. If they don't sell them all at the Royal, they'll be on the CDR website for sale.

I'm really happy about doing my bit for the furkids this year PLUS Juliette and I might just meet up at my hotel for drinks on Thursday night (I'm buying). VERY cool.

So I'm asking everyone to keep your fingers crossed that we make a BIG pile of money kay?

Can't wait to meet up with you Janet! I can also say that Chris and I already have our CDR magnetic notepads - we got them from Karen at the Toronto Dachsie meet up on Sunday! They are simply gorgeous - we have one on the fridge and Chris took one to work (will hang on his filing cabinet).

Anybody interested in more info on the Royal, the web site is: The Royal Winter Fair (http://www.royalfair.org/)

Cheers

Good luck Janet! Too bad they didn't put our babies on the notepads, but oh well! I would love to buy one if you don't sell them all.

Courtney you're right about that. It's too bad no pics were used. I understand the premise though. I have to tell you that I was looking at a Dachshund puppy calendar this weekend and one of my thoughts were that the puppies there were no cuter than our puppers here. The smiling one of baby Leon outside came to mind..
Juliette, thanks for buying some pads! I'm so glad you liked them. I hope they all sell.

Sounds like one little fellow with a giant heart and the cutest way of sitting up and begging has taken you from adoptive mommy to dachshund rescue mommy in no time. Zeke had the same effect on me. You will love working the booth. I so wish I was closer and I'ld be there. I will send money making rayz for CDR.

Oliver IS my inspiration and rescue has become a passion. I have puppy mill nightmares but that's another story. Next year we're making up a small team that will be geared to fundraising and PR for CDR. I will be part of that team. And maybe next year I will try fostering too, but not until I feel my little man is ready for that "next" big step of sharing. I'll be asking the board for advice BIG time then..

In the meantime..for those of you involved in rescue, one of our money making schemes at the Royal is a wheel .. sort of like a wheel of fortune...small prizes, medium prizes and big prizes. People pay to spin and win a prize. It's a money maker for CDR. Dollar stores items and clearance sales goods and gift donations are used as prizes.

I've always wanted to go to the RWF and now knowing that CDR will have a booth there (and that Janet will be working it too!), makes me want to go even more! I hope that you have a really successful fundraising at the fair, and I too will be hoping this year to get involved with rescue and perhaps see if the CDR can use my help. Hope that you and Juliette get a chance to meet too.

CDR cannot ever have too many volunteers Pam. We're so small..it's pityfull. I'm originally from Cornwall by the way and I love Ottawa! Next year during RWF..you come stay with me and we'll go tour the grounds one day and work the booth together the next day!

I must confess! :emb:

Juliette and Janet had invited me to join them in their hotel room for the RWF. I graciously declined becuz.......................

My Casey is 3 months old and hasn't had his shot yet ( he is still on meds from his kennel cough). I didn't want him to be around other dogs until he got his needle.

Well, The invite was just for me to meet up with Janet and Juliette.

I just had to share my story!

The real reason is....(in my best whisper voice) I didn't want to confuse Juliette as my name is Janet and Sir Oliver's mom 's name is Janet too! ( hope you believe that version)

Anyway I hope they have a great time without me and Casey :wavey:

LOL...yep, that's me..the easily confused

Seriously Janet (tigger Janet, not Oliver Janet) - we will drag you, Doug and Casey out to a meet up sometime. How embarrassing for me - I've met DBB-ers in various places around the world - but never met another Toronto based DBB-er (Rob doesn't count, I met him before he joined the board!).

We will raise a glass in your honour tonight!

I took a couple of pics of the booth so everyone could get an idea of what it looked like. We had THOUSANDS of kids come through and it gets crazy! Our booth was the busiest booth of all because of the spin the wheel. Kids loved it and spent oodles of money on it.

Here's a picture of Milo and I with Janet at the Royal Winter Fair last Friday. We had a great time helping to raise funds for CDR. I don't know how many people gave Milo a pat but he sure was popular. And he was extremely polite and well behaved!!

Extremely polite and well behaved? That has got to be the understatement of the year. Milo is amazing! Hundreds and hundreds of people stopped to comment and pat that poor little boy on the head and body. Never turned a lip once. My guess is that Oliver would have taken chunks out of fingers and arms by the end of a few hours and Milo was there all day until 7pm. He must have slept like a log when he got home.
The only assurance I got that Milo was a real dachshund was when the lady put her toy terrier on the stand with Milo and he snarled at her. Well, why should he share his stand and the glory with a terrier anyway after all this was a doxie booth!
