Our 5 year old miniature longhair, Dauber watches George (our 10 year old standard red) finish his food (hoover it, really!), then barks at us to watch him eat. We won't finish his food without one of us watching him. Anyone ever heard of this?

No, but this sounds just like a dachshund! My sister got her dachsie a doggy door, and Lucy won't ever go out the doggy door without barking for everyone to watch what a clever dog she's being.

John, that is hilarious! I've never heard of such a thing, but it's awfully cute! Cute name too--were you a big fan of "Coach?"

No but I know a certain little girl who will run to the spot (bed) where she wants to receive breakfast - gets herself all comfy and then partakes. She used to get me to feed her cereal by hand because she doesn't like getting her nose in the skim milk but we've gotten past that. The way the two of them behave you'd think that we were always taking food from them or starving them.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/facelick.gif

As far as Wotan is concerned- if MY food isn't in HIS mouth I AM starving him. He now NEEDS to drink out of my cups of milk. Of course, he is a gentleman and waits until I've had my glug first...http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/hapfac01.gif

Oh yes, we've heard of this behavior! I have personally witnessed every meal that Talia has eaten. Not by choice mind you... she insists that I watch her eat. And now, since the puppies were born, I've really spoiled her... she won't even touch dog food anymore... she's taken a liking to boiled chicken livers cut up with rice and broth... homemade, of course! She even decided at one point last week that I had to hold her water bowl for her to drink... I called the vet on that one... she told me to go ahead and pamper her because she needs it right now, but after the pups are weaned, not to let her boss me around anymore.

I can't believe the wierd things our dachsies think of for us to do for them. Are we really slaves to their whims? http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/dizzy.gif

Wotan won't "talk" to me since I wouldn't share my dinner with him tonight. He's got a 'tude http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/disgust.gif

That's great!! I always look up and wait for Mum to ruffle my ears before I eat my dinner and then find her afterwards to say thank you ....and is there any more by chance?! Have I told you fellows I'm on a diet at the moment and need to get to 5.5 kilos instead of the 6 kilos I was at Christmas? I'm being weighed again this Thursday so paws crossed - its been a very long haul and if I see many more bowls of Hills RD biscuits I might bark crossly!

All my guys have their little "ways", but Dukey will not eat, yes he gets hand fed, unless he is sitting on a mat in the kitchen, can't be the floor or one of their beds, has to be a mat. He runs to it as soon as he sees food coming his way!

10 pounds of pure cuteness!

Pluto will eat without being watched, but will not eat if no one is in the house. He won't even eat a marrow bone if he's alone. Pluto doesn't know how to sit on a bare floor - if there's no rug or mat around, he'll stand.

Aaahhh, the life of a dachshund! Pluto won't sit on a bare floor...hmmm....only will sit on a nice cushy carpet? Yep, that definitely sounds like a dachsie to me. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

Mickey won't eat anything either if we're not at home. Won't chew on his treats or anything. I guess he doesn't like to eat alone. But then again, neither do I.

Same with F and O. I thought they were just doing it to make me feel guilty. Yet another odd dachsie trait.

Johndog here, it's good to hear that Dauber isn't the only crazy dachsie out there! Another thing he does that's out of this world is if he wants our attention, he'll go to one of those wire door stops that are mounted near a door and twang it with his paw! And, he loves to hide in the dark bathroom! Crazy, huh?

Johndog, I got a good laugh picturing a dachsie twanging the doorstop for attention!

Our late Schnitzel used to hide in old Waldi's crate and come charging out with a roar when we'd try to get him to go in, scaring him and us. Then she'd trot off looking vey self-satisfied.
