When ever my husband is out of town Oscar sleeps in bed with me, where he happily takes over half the bed. He always wakes up once or twice and starts barking, at what...I don't know. He never does this when hubby is home.

Whenever I'm in bed and hubby isn't home yet, Rudy will get up and start barking the instant the lock on the front door clicks. He won't stop until hubby comes into the bedroom and shows Rudy its just him. Too funny! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Shelbie has been known to bark and growl at Nick if he comes to bed later than me and she's fallen asleep and doesn't realise its him for a moment - she immediately apologises but it does make me feel very safe those odd times when he's out of town!

Good boy, Oscar! Otis will bark at Kevin if he comes in late. A few months ago, Kevin came home and Otis was just going wild even after Kevin came in. He was at the top of the stairs just growling and barking. Turns out he didn't care for Kevin's baseball cap!! He's more used to it now, but still is not crazy about humans with hats!!

I live alone and one of my greatest pleasures is reading in bed surrounded by snoozing dachshunds. I am fond of mysteries and suspense novels and often read into the wee hours on weekends if I'm really "in" to a book. I was reading Silence of the Lambs and was at the chapter where Hannibal Lecter escapes from prison when my old Liza who had been snoring peacefully at the end of the bed suddenly jumped up, stared straight at my bedroom door with all her hackles up and growled. Scared the bejeezus out of me. I just knew Hannibal the Cannibal was going to burst through the door any minute. Never did find out what upset her. <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm42.gif" border=0>

Getting caught up on all these posts . . . I just have to say that I HATE when they do that! My dogs will do that occasionally, and it's always at a very scary or intense part of a book. I swear that they time it that way. I have found that Isobel is actully the best of guard dogs--she sounds more vicious than any of my others.

I too, really wonder just what do they think they hear when they go off like that. Is there really something out there???
