Not a dachshund story but thinking about Tina, Pamela's latest rescue, and how her master had to give her up when she went into a nursing home I can only hope I go like one of my great uncles. Despite loosing his wife rather early (50's I believe) he continued to live on the farm just past the edge of the small Illinois town where they lived. He kept coon dogs and continued to go out coon hunting well into his eighties. He was discovered dead in his rocking chair on his front porch with a dog at his side. The paper boy discovered him when he noticed he was sitting in the exact same position he had been in the day before and the previous day's paper had not been picked up.
While I'm not married and would not wish the early loss of a mate on anyone the part of his life I admire is that he was able to stay active and independent late in life and do things he enjoyed one of which included his k-9 companions. I only meet him a couple of times when we had the occasional family dinner at my Aunt's house when we would return to IL on vacations.
