This happened earlier today while I was at work. Half day Summer Friday schedules are soooo nice! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

********************************************
Outside my window it resonates. A distinctive sound, one I know well. Announcing the presence of the breed
I love. I must be crazy... I have never seen a single canine near here before. I hear it again and louder still. I cannot Resist. I stand up and peek into the parking lot below. There below, Ruling the Roost in a white Cadilac is a Black and Tan Dachshund - barking its orders for the owner to hurry up. My eyes have proved what my ears already knew.
***********************************

I sent this to my father by email and this was his reply:

you're obsessed ... addicted ... (just like me and water ... every pond or
river contains the glimmer from a bass swirling the surface in pursuit of a
minnow).

In any case ... your message is one of good prose ... you should post it to
one of your sites. It really reads like a fine poem.

Love ya ...
dad

While he may be biased in his high opinion of my writing skills -I am his DOLL BABY after all - I thought it was indeed worth posting. True, I am addicted, but what better obsession to have than dachshunds??

Besides the prose reading well, it's true that dachsies have distinctive barks. I can "hear" the diff too!

Keep writing about your obsession! I agree, dachshunds are a great one http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Wow how right you are! we are new owners of two long haired beautiful dachsie's. and their bark is distictive. I took them to meet my kids at preschool.they are attending camp .I wasn't even in the building and one little boy said Ms. Collete is coming with her dogs and they bark just like mine. He has a short haired cutie. how smart from one of my graduates he is only 4! I never knew love so fast .They are the coolest dogs. and so great with my kids and my campers too!

Hello all! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gif

We are the proud owners of 2 female mini short hairs (Hannah who is red and Lady who is b/t) that are 10 and 12 weeks old.

I can't wait to hear that wonderful bark. Neither are barking yet. Hannah is whining when left alone, and Lady does when she can't find Hannah, but no actual barking yet.

I grew up with a standard short hair and have the fondest of memories of getting off the school bus and hearing Fritz from far away welcoming me home.

Just wanted to say hi and share. Have a great weekend!!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/jacks.gif

I was outside talking to a neighbor the other day and one of my guys barked and I said 'No bark Hans, I will be right there', and he stopped. My neighbor said, How did you know it was Hans?

Mom's know all. I can usually tell the bark of the breed, but can always tell the difference between my boys bark.

I am hooked as well!

PS-my neighbor thought I was quite strange, but note that she does not have puppers!

And, of course, the same dachsie has a different bark for different occasions! Annie has a bark for "my toy is under the hutch," "somebody's walking past my house and I don't like it," "the mailman's here," and "take me with you!"

How true! Shelbie has her "I've just had my tea and I'm telling you it was lovely" bark, her "someone at the door, perhaps you should get it but I'm right behind you" bark, her very deep "I've just seen a squirrel in the back yard" bark and my favourite "Daffy Duck when he goes, well, daffy" noise (woohoo) when I come home.

And of course the "Your eating and you seem to have forgotten me" bark/whine/yowl

I've become aware of how very consciously and conivingly (is that a word) my dogs fake each other out with barking. If the other dog has the spot they want, they will bark in order to lure the other out of the prized space - then fling themselves into the cozy corner of choice. It's really funny to watch.

That doggie "fake-out" is raw politics.
It's also learned, but not every dog is bright enough to get their timing right (like a good comic).

Sadie Mae, our rott/dob emotionally challenged dog, tries really hard to fake Diva the lab out. Diva is a dog-genius and has all the angles- poor Sadie gets confused and can't figure out when she's out done again!
