hi everyone

i just joined today, our little walter who is 6 had acute neck pain for the last few weeks, his neck was visibly twitching and he was screeching in pain and couldn't lift his head up. sometimes he would go back to normal and then shreik! another spasm attack would occur...he also has confirmed disc disease in his lower spine but up until this point he had been mobile. We made several vet visits but the different medications weren't helping w/his muscle spasms or pain. Finally we got in to see the only vet neurosurgeon in our area and he's getting the disc surgery tomorrow and should be out of the hospital on sunday. If anyone has any advice on neck surgery that would be great....i'll post again ....his surgery is tomorrow. thanks for listening

Hi and welcome to DBb. I am sorry for the reason you joined us and sending healing :rayz: :rayz: for the pup and :hug2: :hug2: for you.

As the others have mentioned please check dodgers www.dodgerlsit.com it is an amazing site with a lot of great information. I am also a member of there chat group you can join at. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dodgerslist/

I work with a lot dogs that have back and neck injuries for my rescue unit. I am to sorry to say the neck injuries seem to be the most painful for the puppers. Please listen to your vet and follow his instructions. Complete restricted crate rest for up to 6 weeks is a must. Only let the baby out to go potty and when you are holding him. The one thing I highly recommend is getting an elevated food an water bowl so he will NOT have to lower his head up and down to eat.

Please send me an e-mail if I can be of any help or you just want to talk.

So sorry to hear about Walter. When I was a kid our miniature schnauzer had a similar situation in her neck. We had gone on vacation and Grandpa and Grandma were doggy sitting. At home Ginger was just let out and did not roam but we weren't sure how she'd react at G & G's house so she had to be on a chain to do her duties. Since it was all new to her apparently she would run at squirrels, etc. and her neck was yanked one too many times. :yikes: I now that screeching sound of pain when the pupster moves his or her neck the wrong way. Poor things!! Here's hoping Walter will be back to normal soon. :angel1:

Sending rays your direction and hop that all goes well. Each case is different so first thing to do is to make sure you ask your neurologist plenty of questions and follow their guidelines for now.

Sorry to hear about your furkid. Neck problems are very painful. I had that experience once but we managed to control it without surgery. Just lucky I guess. Lift the food and water bowls right away. Bending down or lifting up should be avoided at all cost. My vet told me he doesn't understand why all of their bowls are not elevated at all times anyway...he had a good point. Good luck with the surgery! Many rayz coming your way for your pupper.
