This was a fun day for Frank and me. Today is the one year anniversary of Frank coming home from the humane society. Today was also the Fire Hydrant Five races which benefit the local humane society. I have friends that live just a few blocks from the park where all the events start and finish so I am able to stash the boys kennels in their back yard and don't have to worry about heat stroke in a car. It seems like they had a smaller than usual turnout this year. I managed to place third in my age group (40-49) in the human 5 KM (3.1 mile) race with an average pace of about 6:47 per mile. I then dashed to my friends home to get Frank so that I could get Frank to run in the 3 KM (1.86 mile) dog fun race. Things thinned out very early and we were in third place for about the first three quarter of a mile. We held onto fourth till one other dog passed us with about a quarter mile to go. Since the race was relatively short (remember Frank is a distance runner) I let Frank set the pace and much of the race he was pulling at the end of the 6' lead. He was starting to peter out a little bit that last quarter mile but he average a 7:00 minute pace for a thirteen minute flat fifth place overall finish. He showed those people with labs that were laughing at him before the start, once the gun sounder all they got to see was his tail. Once we finished and Frank got a good long drink we jogged back to my friends and picked up Tanner for the 5 KM dog walk. I think Tanner felt a little stressed but behaved well. I ended up carrying him for a little while since he refused to pant while wearing his gentle leader. As things thinned out I took off the gentle leader and just use his regular collar for the rest of the walk and he had no problem. Back at the park he started to growl at a couple of people trying to make friends with him (they were approaching nice and slow since they knew he was shy). We put the gentle leader back on and didn't have any more problems. They boys are both napping now.

Sounds like you had a great day. But, I must tell you, my feet hurt thinking of how many miles you put on your own!

Wow 5th place is really good. Congratulations to Frank!! Its just another one of those moments where dachsie's prove they can outstrip other breeds not only in personality but in stamina. Good going to Tanner as well.
