All the pups got the dreaded bath last night, and since Snickers is a b/t long hair, I put a little bit of my conditioner into her fur and rubbed it in and then rinsed her really good. It made it much easier to brush her out and her coat is really shinny. Is there a conditioner for long hairs, one that would be better then "finesse extra moisterizing" .

I use the Buddy brand from Trader Joes.
I also have heard that it isn't good to use human shampoos/conditioners on dogs. I'm not sure why, though.

Petco and Petsmart have a lot of doggy conditioners.

We use "Fresh N Clean" creme rinse by Lambert Kay. It smells great and makes their hair really soft. Petsmart has it.

It truly is not harmful to use human products if you dilute them down. I am a dog groomer by trade and although doggy products are more ph balanced for dogs, if you will just dilute the human products they are perfectly fine. You would be AMAZED at what is used on show dogs on a weekly basis and their coats are in fantastic shape (not the abused show dogs!). However, if you wish to go to the doggy stores, there are so many wonderful brands out there to choose from it IS worth the trip :) I love shopping so dog shows and such are always great fun to be able to try new products.

I have heard that you can safely use Baby shampos because they are mild. Is this correct? Personally I use an oatmeal shampoo (made for dogs) on mine and it words wonderfully because there is a conditioner in it, and it help during the winter months when it is so dry in the house. I don't give them too many baths because they don't need it and I don't want them getting sick, but that is what I use.

I've never used the baby shampoos because they make wonderful tearless shampoos. Groomer's Edge is the brand I used but Bio-Groom has a fantastic line of tearless shampoos. I had *heard* that eventhough it claims (the human ones) it is tearless sometimes it isn't and I know that the doggy ones are because I have yet to have an eye problem occur with the two I've mentioned.

I will have to try those. Even though the Oatmeal is wonderful, I am not sure if is mild enough for their eyes. It could be the water going in their face though. They hate water on their face. I try to keep it from getting into their eyes too much. Can you get those brands at PETSMART? I have not heard of them before.

I believe you can but if not, PetEdge catalogue online (or any online catalogue you are familiar with) probably carries both :) What I do at work is use the tearless on their face and then use whatever I think best on their body. Sometimes I want oatmeal, sometimes I want Eucalyptus, etc.

If you ever have a dog that has any kind of skin problem even very slight. You don't want to mess with people products. I use special shampoos for the doxies including the oatmeal and have tried a few others. The Lambert Kay worked really good for the dogs with out a sensitive skin. I have bought some at the dog shows too and wish I had kept the label. My brothers Golden has extreme allergies and has to have a medicated shampoo. You never know when allergies can hit. So I play it safe with dog products.
But if you run out of shampoo for yourself I have used Dawn and it worked great. The only healthy thing about me is my hair. Grey doesn't count. LOL! :circle:

I use Cloud Star Buddy Bath and Cream Rinse in Lavender and Mint, plus Gold Medal Pets "Unicoat". It was recommended to me by the groomers in the local PetsMart. Brekke's (longhair) coat does really well with both conditioners, and the Unicoat works well for an 'in-between' deodoriser! ;) Julia B. (aka Julia S.)

I use Sensa Gelle from Solid Gold on mine. I have one (Bogart) that has very sensitive skin and this is the only think I've found that doesn't make him itch or break him out in hives.

For all the wonderfull information. Now, how do keep one longhair from playing in the rain, mud and rolling in the leaves when you send her out to potty :yikes: ? Snickers still has soo much puppy in her and she is so funny to watch play :D .
