View Full Version : A Big First for Masse
As most of you know, Masse is Duck Butter's daughter. Masse never learned to play, try as we may. When DB was healthy and we'd throw a ball . . . DB would get it and hide it under the couch (selfish little _____). http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif Then, of course, there was the period of time, when Masse was young, that DB had IDD & surgery/recovery. DB "room zooms", but Masse always looked at her as if to say, "Huh!" The sweetie just didn't get it. Oh, she does stuff like chase squirrels or (now) if Top Spin runs out to investigate a noise she runs behind big brother barking her support. She just always been this ultra happy "DUH" kinda girl. I don't think there are many times I've ever seen her when her tail wasn't wagging.
Well, a few nights ago I'm sitting on the couch and from the corner of my my eye I see the Racquet Ball shooting across the Dining Room/Kitchen floor with Masse in hot pursuit, she pounces on it, gives it a few shakes and brings it to me, dropping it at my feet. I picked it up, grabbed Top Spins collar so he wouldn't get it and threw it. She PLAYED ball with me for about 1/2 hour. She's 4 years & 4 months old and she finally "gets it"! She had so much fun! When I stopped playing to have dinner . . . she kept kicking it away and chasing it down (until DB took it under the couch). http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif
We were very excited!
So that's our Dachsie Tale! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Way to go Masse! Sounds like she is one precious little girl.
Maybe you have told me before, but I forget...how did you come to be owned by both of the dachsies??
Hi Krista,
DB was traded from a PM to a Back Yard Breeder in payment of some kind of debt between them and we fell in love with her and decided to get her outta there . . . so we bought her. Then we wanted another so we tried to breed DB using a stud from a breeder in MI . . . she had one puppy (Double Bump), who died after 2 days. Then we decided to buy Three Rails from the same breeder when he was 8 1/2 weeks old. He & DB made a two puppy litter. The first one born was Harley (that's what the new owners named her) and when we saw that DB wouldn't nurse Harley . . . we went to the Emergency Clinic. They took an Xray and discovered another puppy still in there. They induced labor and 8 hours after Harley was born, Masse came in to the world. We never dreamed the puppy would still be alive, so we thought we'd keep the miracle baby.
We sold Three Rails and Harley (nominal fee), both to the same wonderful couple, who at our advice still go to the same Vet we use . . . so we do get updates on how they dote over and spoil the 2 of them. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif
We went to a rare breed (or was it UKC?) show and saw a Catahoula for the first time several years ago and decided on that for our third dog. We found a breeder in MI and the rest is history . . . we got Top Spin 2 years ago in June. Now Char says she's been thinking of rescuing a Standard Smooth Dachsie to go with our 2 Mini's and Top Spin for a foursome. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/dizzy.gif
So that's my story and I'm sticking to it! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

Oh Mark! HOW EXCITING!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif Masse and Maddie sound so alike in that category. Dolly has just recently got the doxie dashing down. Maddie just tries to stay out of her way. Maybe with time she'll do the room zoom too! Madderoo also looks at Dolly like What the heck is wrong with you????

Good Job Masse! Lucy and Tess send their congratulations on discovering the miracles of "ball." Actually, my last foster, Julie, took both blue balls with her and all we have now are tennis balls which Lucy prefers. Kibby just started playing like a puppy today... hasn't discovered balls or squeeks yet. Rena

Well done Masse - see how much fun it is? Shelbie loves us to throw any of her toys but isn't terribly keen to bring them back - she just stands juuuust out of reach barking at us until we haul ourselves off the sofa to pick it up and throw it again - I suppose she's got us well-trained!

Gee Mark!
It sure took Masse a long time to teach you how to play ball!
Next time, be a little more observant, ok?
Cracks me up- the little dachsie devils always have the same approach with those balls. Drop and slobber, then dashhhhhhh away-----

Mark, I'm waiting for the day when Masse kicks the ball across the room and makes Top Spin "fetch".
Nothing these little dachsie will decide to do surprises me anymore, it's just a question of time.
Roxane and crew
You guys crack me up! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif
Speaking of Masse teaching Top Spin to fetch . . .
I don't know if she'll ever do that, but when Top Spin has a chewy that she wants she will look out the back door earnestly, bark as though something is out they, he runs out the dog door (protector that he is) and she immediately gathers up his chewy, takes it to "her spot" and pretends it was hers all along. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif
She was playing with the squeeky ball last night. We were sitting in the living room and heard this growling behing the couch. I peeked over the back and she was in the hall kicking the ball and pouncing on it before it got away. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
Thanks to everone for celebrating Masse's "first" with us! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/pink.gif

I thought my Sadie was the only one to do that. Whenever Abbie has a toy/treat that she wants, Sadie will go running to the door barking ferociously. Of course, Abbie drops what she is doing to go investigate. At that time Sadie goes and gets the toy and comes running to me to "protect" her from Abbie when Abbie discovers what has happened.

Yeah, Dolly has that trick down pat, only she does it to the HOOMANS. She makes like there's something to investigate outside. (of course this is always around dinnertime) Then as soon as the hooman has vacated his or her chair, the Dolly rushes to occupy and hopefully snarf from the table. One time she had both of us looking for trespassing varmints. When we both turned around, she had her head in the spaghetti bowl. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

Way to go, Masse! How clever of her to store it up for so long that we hoomans would be amazed! I have memories of the first family dachsie barking furiously at the front door, so my dad wouldn't notice her sneak attack on his mincemeat pie! That was Johanna. My first dachsie, Fritz, would play ball until he reached the point of exhaustion and had to crawl to his water dish - so we had to limit his ball times! All three girls now - at one time or another - have LIED to each other about some activity in order to steal another's toy, bone or blankie! But I sure love hearing everyone's "rugrat" stories!!!

Masse sounds just like Solo, ALWAYS a happy girl! Yay that she's found out about the joys of retrieving, she sounds like a real sweetie. Solo's not very sold on the ball idea, but will fetch and bring it to me or Mark (my hubby) very competently if Chewy's not around. When he pitches up though she'll stop straight away. It's quite weird because she loves playing ANY other game with him but won't carry on fetching if he shows interest (which he ALWAYS does), she then rather chases him as he chases the ball. Maybe she just prefers to play with her lively brother than an inanimate object! Chewy however is ball-mad, crazy and demented… balls are his life! Say "where's your ballie?" and he's all acquiver and wouldn't notice if the whole house collapsed around us… a ballie game is about to commence! They also play musical chewies… Chewy will bark, pretending to hear a noise outside in the hope that Solo will go and investigate, or Solo shows intense fascination with an old chew, and when Chewy's interest is piqued and he comes over to investigate, she whips behind and nabs the newer one! It's amazing that it rarely results in a skirmish, as they can both be quite underhanded little tykes… luckily it sounds like that's a common thing with all our furkids! ~Marion~
