I have two doxies. One, Auggie, had back surgery in 1997 at the age of 6 years and recovered nicely. Jake, however, is now 11 years old and has been tripping on his front leg often over the past several months. He is taking the lowest dose of prednisone that keeps him from falling too often - .25 mg/day. I have recently been reading articles about using vitamin C and its ability to help many dogs with back problems, dysplasia and arthritis. I would like to try it with Jake but don't know what dose to use. He is 14 pounds. Does anyone have any information on dosages or have any experience with using Vitamin C?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Caroline

A healthy dog takes 500 mg but I started Gunner out on 250 then gradualy worked up to 500. A injured dog takes much more. Please check with "Dodgerlist" they have files on what to give and what other supplements people have given their injured dogs which works for them. Good Luck.:)

I'm sorry, I don't have any information for you (but many will on this board!!!), but I just wanted to welcome you to the board :wavey: :wavey: , say, I'm glad you found us, and hope to hear many more stories about you, Auggie & Jake....of course, pictures are always welcome (hint, hint).

The reference for the dodgerslist is here (http://www.dodgerslist.com/) which has a wealth of information on back injuries and suppliments etc.

We don't use Ester-C, but I've heard excellent results from it. I would recommend gloucosimine however. We see great results from that! We give 450 mg per feeding mixed in with their raw food.

Glucosamine chondroitine should be taken along with vit.Ester-C but check "dodgerslist" to get the right dosage they are different for an injured dog. I bought a pill crusher/cutter and I use that to get the dosages I just sprinkle it on top of his food. Dodgers has lots of member that have gone thru this. I joined to prevent Gunner from getting this but there are no guarantees.

My Rieke has been having back trouble since before Thanksgiving.
Thankfully, she is back on her feet. She get's 500mg EsterC twice a day right now.

I will check Doger's list as well... Just thought I'd let you know what I'm doing.

Good luck!!
