View Full Version : BATH TIME

Last night was bath time at our house--always an exciting event. (especially for mommy, the bather of all things four legged)
Lance, the little foster boy was the grungiest, and so he went first. He's pretty docile, and moves kinda cautiously...so imagine mommy's surprise when a soaking wet Lance went FLYING through the air, out of the tub, clearing the tub by at least a foot...
Then it was Miss Gidget's turn. Again, not too cooperative--and she ALMOST made it outta the tub (bummer to be only 7 lbs)..and was a generally fussy baby.
Then, it's time for Chaucer, who is my little boy..but what a nut. The other dogs were smart enough to try and get outta the tub on the side where the shower doors were OPEN...what's Chaucer's approach--go to the other side, and try and use his paws to OPEN the sliding doors. (which, btw, he figured out)...but really...talk about taking the difficult road...

Bath time is fun time at our house! Mummy (me) sits in the bathtub as Daddy (Bart) brings the fur kids in...then we plaaaay, plaaay, plaaaay!
The boys all got baths last week. Henry was first, but he wanted to stay in...so Bart brought in Jakey (Henry is still in the bathtub).....washing and playing away....then it was Dash's turn for his first bath at our house.....
so there we are.....with Mummy, Henry, Jakey, and Dash all in the tub....and dry Daddy outside...so of course we all had to jump on him, soaking through all of his nice dry clothes! the boys loved it!
Dot, sounds like you had your hands full! Do they make baby locks for shower doors?

I take Isobel into the shower with me when it's her bathtime. I tried her in the sink, but she almost did the flying-dachshund thing and I was terrified she'd blow her back. I have to laugh as she's standing in the shower using all her dachsie power to give me the dirtiest look she can muster (and it's a doozy) She gets madder and madder as I stand there looking at her laughing so the tears run . . .SHE is not amused!

Mine all do not mind baths, but Guy-Guy is something else.He LOVES it we have a jacuzi tub in 1 of our bathrooms if I start to fill it and don't make sure the door is locked he stands on the ledge step and drops his BALL in so he can watch it dance. Then he licks the soap off me as I wash (irish spring is his favorite) then I have to take the wash cloth and wash his face(whole head) then he goes to roll and comes back for more.If he can steal the wash cloth he takes it to the sofa and rolls till he and it are all wet.The other bathroom holds the regular tub (better know as the dog tub) if I even clean it and he hears the running water he tries to get in so he can have a soak.Tray our 10 year old would get in the tub with my granddaughter when she lived with us he has TONS of coat so I would be blow drying both him and her. They LOVE rain and snow too guess they are really not Dachshunds Huh?

We also have fun bathing Bugsy ;8
I sometimes give him a foot bath after a walk depending on how muddy his feet get from the park we walk in.
We bathe him in the laundray basins next to the washer/dryer set. We use a baby bath in one basin and sometimes put him in the second basin for a sec to drip off before I put him on the dryer with his towels to dry.
Well, last time, he decided he didn't want to wait in the basin and tried to jump onto the washer which is next to the sink. Unfortunately, the lid was open and I had to catch him before he went down inside the blasted thing.
Learned 2 lessons: ALWAYS close the lid of the washing machine and NEVER take my eyes off a non-sleeping dachsie!

How often should you bathe your dachsie? Just when he is dirty? Or once a week or so?

Our guys get baths when they need it. If you bathe them too often, you will wash away all of the oils from their skin, leaving them with dry, itchy skin.....

The opinions widely vary on this one....
From what I have read in lots of dog care books and per my vet's reccommendations, my boys get a bath about every 6-8 weeks with a mild tear free puppy shampoo. All the books I have read say that human shampoo's do not have the right PH for dogs and should be avoided.
However, there are people on here that bathe their dogs once a week, use human shampoos...etc -with out problems. There are others that only truly bathe their dog if they get skunked, or roll in something nasty.... you have to find what works for you and your dog.
Between bathings, I use a rubber grooming mitt to bruch my dachsies (smooths) every other day or so. It sloughs off dead hair and skin cells and keeps their coat nice and shiny too, since it helps distribute their natural oils over the coat. If they get muddy paws, I just wipe their paws down with an old dampened towel. Those practices keeps them pretty clean.

Thanks Krista and Mandy. I haven't bathed Maximus yet, but I do brush him every day with a cat brush. He thinks it's a game, but I can tell he likes to brushed also. Maximus is a black & tan smoothie, so I like his coat to really shine. Right now it does, so I was worried that a bath might take the oils out. I'll give it a try. I have some great puppy shampoo that is supposed to be great for making a black coat shine.

Krista,
I think I have that same rubber mitt...the boys love it...it's like getting a massage. they also like the human massagers....like the wooden happy massager and the acrylic roller massager. Henry, foe one, would be willing to sit there all day if you used on on him!
I know a lot of people say not to use people shampoo...and I think this is probably good advice for a lot of the people shampoos out there. We use human baby shampoo...it's the ONLY shampoo Henry likes, and we have tried quite a few dog shampoos (some were terribly expensive too!). But Henry likes the baby shampoo...it's gentle on their skin and tear-free....so that's what our guys use.
When we come in and they have wet paws, they have to have their feet dried. If they get stuff on them or are a bit smelly..they get a bath...and sometimes they get baths just because they REALLY WANT one.....swimming for the winter time, you know.
Hope this helps, Cathy!

Let's see Frank came home April 14, 2000, Tanner near the end of July, 2000. Frank has had one bath and Tanner two. Tanner's first bath was a result of the famous dachshund roll in something stinky. They both are about due for another bath. Between baths mild odors can be removed with one of the dry or wet spray on pet care products. The dry baby powder spray can help extend times between baths. Mild odors seem to disappear with the baby powder spray cleaner which is them combed out. I get many complements on the boys coats. I have only used products formulated for dogs. I have used a mild puppy no tears shampoo or AVO's medicated shampoo on my dogs. They are longhairs and while they should get combed 2-3 times a week they average about once a week. I find a comb works much better than a brush on their coats. The finer tooth the comb the better for keeping mats out of the coat. I generally use a flea comb. Feather trimming on their feet and near Franks Ankles takes place with each nail trimming. They sleep in my bed so if they got too stinky they would be bathed more often.
