I am waiting on my husband to pick Hayley up at the vet at 4:30. The receptionist couldnt give me the full report but did say that she has "disc problems with her back." I, of course, am devistated. The MD has given her meds and I am assuming that he will recommend crate rest. FYI - My husband states that surgery is not an option for us so I dont know what I can do to change his mind. So I am praying that things dont get that bad. Crate Rest - Can she still sleep with us? She has NEVER jumped out of bed or even tried. We have NEVER hurt her in bed. Also can we hold her while we are at home? She is sooo spoiled and used to being loved on 24-7 so I am so sad at the thought of her being hurt and having to be isolated. I just want to know what will be best for her. Thanks for the rayz.

Hang in there! Rieke was very bad, and we had decided against surgery, and she is going to be fine (hope I didn't just jinx myself...). My vet said it would be fine to have her on my lap. Just keep that back nice and straight, pick him up carefully without bending the back. Rieke usually sleeps in bed with us, but during the worst of it she slept in a crate next to me and never even complained. She let me know when she was ready to sleep in bed again. She walks over our legs several times at night, so she needed to sleep in the crate.

Strict crate rest (with lap cuddle time) has been known to work wonders! :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: for Hayley and :hugs1: for you. Keeping them quiet once they start to feel better is the hardest thing!

I hate this freaking disc disease!!!!!! It sounds like she was still functioning pretty well... so probably surgery wouldn't be indicated yet, anyway, which is good.

I will let others who have dealt with this advise you further... I am sure you can cuddle and pet her... but as far as being in the bed, if she fell out or something at this critical time, then you might find yourselves looking at a paralysis situation where surgery would be the only choice - which you definitely want to avoid. But again, I will let those who have experience here elaborate. Rayz for little Hayley and her parents... :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: for Hayley! I think crate rest means crate rest, going through it now can mean a long healthy life for her (but I know it won't be easy!!) Good luck to you and your baby!!

Follow the vets instructions. I would suggest at leat at first using the crate at night instead of the big bed. I almost forgot the rays.

:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: for Hayley too. I have heard where some people have put their dog's crate on the big bed at night with them inside it so that they can see you and still feel like you are close by. There are also cases where non-surgical treatments have seemed to greatly helped with back issues. I'm sure you've heard of Dodger's List:

Dodger's List (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Dodgerslist/)

It's a great resource about IVDD. I know that accupuncture and water therapy have worked wonders for many on the list. It sounds like your vet has a good handle on the problem as well.
Hang in there, and keep us posted on Hayley's progress!

Please listen and do the crate rest thing. Dudley didn't indicate anything serious at first, then the worst happened. Had I realized how things could happen I would have done crate rest on my own. I sure with lots of TLC and crate rest Haley will be fine.

I am so sorry to hear about Haley's back problem :(

Neither of mine are used to being in the crate because I never use it (except when needed to be on crate rest) but they didn't mind sleeping in it when they had sore backs. I think if you could put the crate where Haley could see you she should accept it OK, at least while she is in pain.

:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: for Haley to make a full recovery, and Please keep us posted

I'm sorry to hear the latest on Hayley. If she will tolerate the crate this is a must. When our Dodger had an episode with his back he freaked out with his crate, we had to watch him 24/7 and I slept on the floor with him. This is very difficult that's why I think Hayley in her own crate would be the best. JMO! She doesn't have to be isolated she can be in every room your in. Definitely follow your vets advice. The Dodgerslist has lots of great info and there are alternative methods if you do not do surgery. Check them out.

Please listen to the vet and keep her on strict crate rest. It's essential that she not do anything to stress her back now. My veterinary orthopedic surgeon had mine in the crate 24/7. I could take her out and sit on the floor with her and love on her, but that was all. Putting the crate next to the bed, perhaps raised up to bed level so she can see you would be a good idea. Even though nothing has happened before in the bed. This would be the one time that it might (Murphy's Law) and it could be devastating.

:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: for Hayley!

Ask the vet specifically what they mean by crate rest and ask about sleeping arrangements at nights. You don't want to mess with disc problems with dachsies!!!
