My sister's dachshund, Auggie, is down in the back. Patti called me yesterday and said that Aug had gotten into the garbage and eaten a steak bone on Friday. She said that Saturday night, they had him outside for a long time and every time he tried to use the potty, he would cry pitifully! She wanted to know what she could do to help him pass the steak bone. She also noted, during the conversation that he refused to go up and down the steps to go outside. I told her that it didn't sound like a problem with being able to potty. I suspected it was his back. She did not want to believe that, but I told her that regardless, she should take him to the emergency vet and get him x-rayed. Well....lo & behold...she calls me later to tell me that it is indeed his back. (Why believe your little sister...she's only been involved in dachshund rescue for almost 5 years!... and owns three herself! What does she know about them?)
So, poor little Aug is on total crate rest and regimen of steroids. Please send rayz for little Aug! He is in so much pain. And he's not eating because it hurts too much for him to stand up & walk to the feed bowl. Any ideas on how to keep him eating?
Thanks all!
Dana

As for the eating, when my two were on crate rest after they had back problems. I fed them in the crate. They didn't come out of the crate except to potty.

Auggie we are so sorry to hear you are not feeling well sending lot of :rayz: for a quick recovery. I learned early on no trash can sit out when a Doxie is around. They are just to nosy and find things they shouldn't have.
Sending mega :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: to Aug from CA. I'm sure glad you talked her into going to the vet s.a.p. Poor little guy he needs lots of crate rest, I would try hand feeding top grade canned food I'm sure he would love that. Please keep us updated.
Have Patti check the following sites for more info.

I'm sending lots of :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: to Auggie. Plenty of :rayz: to both you and your sister. I know what you guys are going through. It is a terrible thing. While I don't know much about not eating because my Spunky eats even while he is in pain (except the 1st day of his injury) the main thing is to make sure he is drinking. Give him a day to see if the meds kick in and his pain isn't so severe. Hopefully, little by little he will improve and be eating and drinking and not feeling the agony I know he is in now. I will  for all of you, just as many others on this board did for me. I really believe in the :rayz: . I'm sure with everyone rooting for him that he will be just fine.

:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: For Aug. When Turbo had surgury on his back he would not eat or drink water for anyone but me. At first I had to cup the water in my hand and he would lick it from my hand, the same with his food at first he would only eat from my hand. You might try that as not to put any strain on the back right now.

Aug is doing much better! He went for a follow-up visit to the vet yesterday and he said that he is making a remarkable recovery. He is already able to move around, so they have told them that he can come off of crate rest already (seems soon to me) and that after two more days he can go UP steps but he has to wait four days before he can go DOWN steps. I told my sister that I would just let Aug decide when he's ready. I told her that she might want to limit his step climbing for a while anyway. I also told her that she should help him lose a little weight, because at 9 years old, this could certainly re-occur and I'd hate to see Aug go through this again.
So....thanks so much for the RAYZ! They certainly seemed to help, as he is feeling much, much better!

Please make your sister understand, those Doxies are such tough little things, they don't always let you know how much they are hurting.

I told her he shouldn't be doing steps yet....and she did NOT let him. However, Patti just called me a short while ago crying because even though Aug had a great couple of days, this morning he was crying and shaking with pain. I worry that perhaps he felt better than he really was and overdid it, or maybe he slept wrong? Anyway, she is on the way to the vet with him now and she's very worried.
So....please send lots more :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: for Auggie!

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable coming off crate rest so fast but then each case if different. If he was one of my boys and he continues to have problems I would ask for a referral to a neurologist just to ease my mind that all the proper treatment is being done.

Here are a few more healing rayz for the little guy.
:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:
and a couple of prayerz too.

Unfortunately this kind of problem takes a LONG time to get better. Perhaps this is a new injury so I'm glad she is taking Aug to the vet for a recheck.
Please keep us updated on Auggie. Sending more healing :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: his way.

Crate rest is at least 6 wks. and if she doesn't want to do that have her get him a x-pen and put his crate in there peepee pad and food. He needs to be confined to small spaces, only outside for potty breaks, I know it is hard but TUFF LOVE. I hope all goes well and I am sending big AZ healing rays:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:
