Ok, I know I should have registered Mersey a long time ago. But I wanted to wait until I moved so he would be registered at my new house. I put what I thought were his litter papers in his file. It turned out to be a duplicate copy of the bill of sale. I have everything the breeders sent me. I have the envelope in which they sent me the pre-sale contract even. I have his airplane ticket, the sales slips for the credit card. Everything! except the litter papers.
What now? Is it no longer possible to register him now? I am sure there is some way to recover from this.

Patrick,
It's good to see you here again and I'm glad that Mersey is still with you. If you can't find the papers contact your breeder. The papers you file are what they sent you and show the transfer of ownership. They should be able to obtain a duplicate.
Cindi or Becky may have some ideas as well..

I move into my new house on the 28th, if all goes well. I could have moved on the 21st, but the stupid bank is holding my check for my furniture....I hate banks.
Anyway, Mersey is doing very well at the trainer. He has spent five months there now. My plan is to get a female, and send Mersey out to a handler for showing, and then work with the female. When Mersey comes back with his Championship, she will go out. I am also planning a trip to St. Catherine's Monastry on Mount Sinai in Egypt soon, so I am trying to work it out so that both dogs are doing something while I am gone.

Patrick, do you know his parent's registration numbers and his litter number? You can now register your puppy online with that info. So- instead of having dups ordered, just have his breeder pull up the info and do the registration here: http://www.akc.org/dogreg/puppy/puppy_reg.cfm
Good luck. How's that pup doing? He must be quite a handsome dog by now. :)

Chrissie... The breeder would have to do it online won't they? Else there would be no record of the ownership transfer?

I have the bill of sale, and a print out of his pedigree. I have all the information I need except the litter number.

Hmmm... I guess I really don't know, Karen. It's under a link for "puppy buyer"... so who knows. Seems too easy. :)

BTW Patrick.. congratualtions on getting the new house. Moving is a pain but once you're in it'll be great. I'm sure Mersey will love it too.

Ah! I see- the litter owner has to do THEIR part, then the puppy buyer completes it.
Did his breeder start the transfer of ownership? Maybe?

I guess the best thing to do would be to contact the breeder... doing their part and then Patrick doing his part online might save some cost.

Patrick,
here is the official answer from AKC on the remedy of such situation:

We all can recognize why the litter owner would need to do this - otherwise unscrupulous people would be claiming they lost THEIR papers and be registering their who-knows-whatsis as registered dogs.
I'm sure the breeder will have no problems helping you if you call them. They might wish to make sure you had no other puppies in the house that the lost papers *might* be used for BUT....AKC will negate those papers if they anyone tries to use them. They know what the puppy's number SHOULD be but when they re-issue papers they give the new papers a slightly different number ie they add one more puppy to the litter so the last number will be different. This is how they can negate the first *lost* registration papers. THEN, if the original papers show up in their system someone is in big trouble :)....supposedly.
