Good question... I'm no expert, but Rooby, who turned 6 last week, swims in our pool all summer and she's never had any back issues (knock on wood!). Don't have any experience with chiropractic care. There are others here who do though.

I think both would be a good move. Especially getting familar with the water. One of my hardest things is to try and rehab a dog that hates water.

Hadn't thought of it that way Yolanda... good point.
Rooby can't wait for swimming season to start! ;)

I love the video! Reminds me so much of Stinker, who was my swimmer and never had back problems either! She had the same leg action and tail whip!

I wish you all could see Rooby in the pool, in person. We can't keep her out of there during the summer... her favorite thing is for us to throw her 'splash bombs' & 'splash frisbees' so she can swim and retrieve them... if we aren't in the mood to do that she'll swim around and collect them all and put them on a float... then bark her head off til we give in and start throwing them for her to retrieve all over again. She's a hoot...

Link to video doesn't work for me!! I get garbage. Right clicked, Save As and the only choice was Text Document. That can't be right, what is wrong? Do I need a newer version of some player?
Went to Bob's site and clicked on all links and couldn't find it! HELP!

Julia you are so welcome! :)
Courtney, Rooby & Lexie would LOVE to have Napoleon come swimming! His trunks... made me laugh out loud when I read that. :D Oh, and Kathy, you and Audrey are most welcome also but I have to warn you... Rooby says to tell Audrey don't try stealin' her man in that bikini!
Anita, I don't know what's wrong... is Bob around?

Ha, I was wondering this myself! My Justice has been diagnosed with a mild form of hip displasia, and the vet recommends swimming. Luckily we have a pool, but it will only be open May to Sept, so I was thinking if he would fit in the tub. I guess we will have to conduct our own experiments? Mine hates swimming, and will not go in the pool on his own, but he is the greatest little swimmer ever! His little short legs work like great little paddles, hubby and i can't help but laugh.

Sabrina doesn't like swimming either. We did do "puppy-proof" trained. Our obedience trainer gave us a flyer on how it is important to train your dog how to get out of the pool. Dogs when fallen into a pool try to get out at the spot where they fell and that's how the majority drowns. We spent a few days with Sabrina in the pool directing her to the steps. She took it as a major punishment. We do have a child proof fence around the pool, but still trained her anyway. Now, when the weather warms up we will be moving into a house with no pool. :-(

In my earlier post I didn't really respond to the question. I do preventive chiropractic with both myself and my dogs. I have a great chiropractor who works on dogs and people. I think that it's worth the time/money. I don't do water therapy regularly, but probably should. I don't have a pool, but I do have a big bathtub that I used when we had back problems. It works great and has the advantage of being indoors so that in the winter you can do the water therapy without freezing.
