Mitzi's coat is soft and shiny but she sheds up a storm. What could be causing this? Could it be her diet? Or do dachsie's shed their puppy fur (she is 7 months old)? What should I do to prevent this?

PS As of right now she is eating Science Diet but will be changing in a few months.

Yes puppies do as we call it blow coat also is she spayed? if not that is another reason for her blowing coat a female long does this about 2 months before a heat all heats in her whole life unless she is spayed once she starts her heat the coat will start to come back.Plus every season change (the weatherI mean)she will change her coat like you do spring jacket, winter coat.Try giving some Omega 3 capsuals it will help so will a humidfier in the house(that will help you too)

Thanks - I know that she'll shed during season changes but this seems to be different so that is why I ask. She isn't spayed yet (ran into cash troubles and had to cancel her appointment - her vet is the most expensive but the cleanest in town.) I hope to get her there real soon but as of right now it's a wait and see kind of thing.

I have wires and do not have a shedding problem BUT since pk says longs shed 2 months before they come in season you might want to give serious, serious thought to allowing your girl to experience her first season since her hormones may already be changing. In my experience, it is always best to get a girl spayed when her hormones are as normal as possible. So, if you know you have to wait anyway, let her go through a season and then wait 1/2 the time between seasons (or 1/2 the time till this season) ie if she came in RIGHT now you would wait 3.5 months after she goes out. Then her hormones will be the most settled.

Hi, Shonda!
I can't help you with the shedding problems as I have only had short haired doxies but I do have a question related to yours....Do long hair doxies shed more than short hair? One of the many reasons I like doxies is that they don't shed alot, mostly at season changes as mentioned.

Freddie sheds A LOT for a short-hair I think. His skin and coat are healthy, but his his hairs are coarse (shiny but coarse!). So by being coarse, maybe that makes the shedding worse? I guess the smooth's hair can be coarse like people's hair? When I have Freddie on my lap, I HAVE to lay a towel underneath him!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif
