Buddy is a red mini, 12 wks old now. He is getting quite a few white hairs on his back now. My hubby thought at first it was paint since Bud decided to help me paint the kids room 2 wks ago but they are multiplying. He had a silver dapple litter mate. Could it be possible that there is some slight dappling coming out? I haven't yet gotten his papers from the breed I got him from so I haven't be able to research his line yet. I was just curious if it was even possible to dapple latter in puppy hood.

It seems that red goes thru many changes when a puppy is born it is one shade of red and then it grows up to be a completely different shade .. example Winston my long hair red... when i 1st brought him home they said he was a red sable ... he had a blk overlay and looked almost like a blk and tan as hes gotten old her is very red and the only blk he has on him is on his tail and around the tips of his ears... i would wait until your pup is 6mos old at least before registering him just to be sure of the color... here is a link to see winston as a pup and now there are also pics of my other pups http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif Hope u enjoy

Oh my. You don't have his papers yet? Did they give you a color pedigree? Ask them for one!!!!
It very well could be that he is a dapple but I wouldn't 'think' the white hairs would mean that. Reds frequently only show their dapples when they are very young and their 'spots' can be shades of dark or light (I used to think it was only light but it isn't.) As they mature in to their red colors and shed puppy hairs, frequently the 'spots' blend. Normally, dapples (spots) don't appear later in life....or so I am told.

A good rule is to not buy a puppy if the breeders don't have it's AKC reg papers on hand, by the time puppies are 8 weeks and ready to go the papers should be there. I bought a Boxer puppy for my grandparents last yr, the puppy was 8 wks and the breeder told me the AKC papers hadn't come back yet, needless to say I never received them. This cute little Boxer now has a nose like a Rottweiler or a Lab, $350 for a mixed breed! I contacted AKC and made a complaint but according to them there is little they can do. I guess you just live and learn and I did learn! No matter how honest some ppl may seem make sure ALL the paper work is there.
As for the white hairs I thought red Dachsies have dark spots if they're dapples? I'm still tryin to learn these things.

Nope, red dapples can have dark or light spots (I've never seen one with white spots but that isn't to say it couldn't happen). That is why the best time to note a red dapple is when it is born because the spots, I am told, show up best then. As they get older, they can tend to blend with the solid red coloring.

Thanks Andrea ... wow u have 6 join the club http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gifLOL
As for the red dapples ... all the books i have ever read state that dapple is a lighter color over a darker such as the blk/tan silver dapple but i have seen red dapples before with the dark spots and i wouldnt know what else to call it other than dapple its just like the dapple on the blk/tans only a deep red or even a blk looking color ... but im sure dapple could most def. be a lighter red over a darker also ... i think red is the most confusing color http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Buddy had a black spot on the base of his tail when we first got him. But as he has gotten older the spot is gone. The white hairs are strange to me. The are really a bright white scattered on his back. He is a deep red color. My hubby thinks he looks perfect except for those white hairs. He said he's ready to pluck them. He thinks all dachshunds should be reds. Boy will he be suprised when I bring home a B/T. Thanks for all the replys on coloring. I am going to try and post a pic of Buddy's white hairs for you experts to see.

I have noticed that Aug's color has changed. He is overall red, but across his sholders, two light tan stripes and his heiney is the same way. Two white spots on his chest too.
Nope not AKC by any means but, I wonder how much more he is going to change?

Those pics are great!!! They just made me want more dachsies even more than I already did. I'm gonna have to work on my hubby. He loves these dogs just as much as I do, he's just trying to act tough. I've got to show him these pics and wear him down. Wow Winston has changed alot in color.

Buddy's mom,
Did you receive all your paperwork from the breeder? Have you posted any pics of the lil guy yet? Can't wait to see him.

When we brought him home we thought for sure that he would always be that dark we got him from a girl who was dumping the whole akc reg. litter at the shelter because she was moving ... she marked red sable on his papers but we crossed that out and marked red...because by the time we decieded to sendt he papers in he was changing colors now hes almost all red except the tips of his ears and his tail his coat is getting long in some places finally hes going thru a awkward phase right now...lol long here sort there... but hes still beautiful to me http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
