Both mine have little bald patches on the very tops of their ears (close to their skull), I don't think they are so much bald patches but the way the short fur falls in that spot?

Charlie (8 months) is thin on top of his head, and his ears are thin. Our vet told us it was something common with dachshunds.

Did the bald spots just appear, though? If they did, and the hair is easy to pull out in those spots, it could be mange, which happens when they have weak immune systems, I think.

And before you freak out at the possibility of mange... there are a number of different types.
Demodex mange is the type most common in puppies.. the mites that cause it are transferred from the mother. *it is not contagious to other dogs or animals* If it is localized it can easily be treated with ointments. However.. a vet would probably have to take a look and possibly take a skin scrapping to be sure of what it is.

She has bald spots above her eyes and where her ears fold. That are kinda big. My moms bf says she could of been a puppy from a back yard breeder, or that they mite grow in.

but a lot of doxies have very small bald spots in those areas. You can see them in a lot of the pics posted of the different doxies on the board here. Also some doxies as they get older do have what is commonly called male dachshund baldness. My Con has that and we have tried different foods and supplements. But it doesn't really hurt them other than being cold in the winter when you live in Wisconsin especially. I had Con checked for thyroid problems and also the vet did a skin scrapping just to make sure that it wasn't anything to worry about. unfortunately each winter he seems to loose more hair.
I doubt that she has mange unless the breeder was a puppy miller or really unsanitary conditions. She would have had to have some contact with another infected animal. If your vet didn't mention it when you took her in I doubt that it is a problem. If you haven't seen a vet yet I would suggest that you not wait to long. Better safe than sorry, besides they can give you the proper meds and shampoos needed.

Miller has the same thing. Not much hair on the top and back of his ears, top of his head and chest. Not exactly bald, just thin. I understand it's common in dachsies. As far as the breeding goes, I don't know. He's a B/T dapple and did come to the shelter from a BYB operation, so I guess it's possible. My vet told me that there wasn't anything wrong, like mange or other skin problems and that it didn't hurt him, so I don't worry about it and Miller could care less! :dizzy:

My little guy Baxter has severe food allergies, and it started showing as balding near his ears. It spread to his belly and chest before we tried a food tiral. Now, he is as hairy as ever, but must stay on a special food. He loves the food, though, so it's no big deal. The food trial did take 13 weeks, but he started to improve after just a few weeks.

Max's coat always gets a little thinner in the winter. I think it is just the dry air. Once summer comes and the air is warm and humid, his thin spots disappear.
