My oldest claims to be a smooth wild boar according to his papaers. However, He does not look black and tan from a distance, and actually has no black at all. He looks more like a chocalate bar with a tan underside. He also has a coarse stripe of hair down his back which is darker than the rest of his coat. The rest of him is smooth as velvet, and he has darker circles around his eyes.
Any thoughts on what he might 'be'?

Most likely he is a red. Many reds look brown but a true chocolate and tan is patterned just like a black and tan EXCEPT for where the black would be there is chocolate coloration. Also, the nose would be chocolate to pink colored along with pads and eye rims. Many reds that are born with a lot of black shed the black hairs out as they mature but a lot of people register the puppies early and mislabel the coloring.
Also, many smooths have a coarser texture to their coat along the spine. I think your child sounds like an interesting color.

His nose was pink when we got him, and has since browned over the years. I think his pads are brown (can't find him at the moment--probably under the couch digging to Singapore...)

Ahhhh, no wonder you are confused about his coloring!!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif If he doesn't appear to be a black and tan from a distance (and that would mean having black pigment, too) and if he does not have tan points against a chocolate body I can only guess that what you might have is an e-red or a brown-nosed red or a chocolate factored red (if the latter is the case he could not have any black pigment). Do you know what color his parents and grandparents are? NOT that this makes any difference to him or you but I am always fascinated by color genetics http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Unfortunately I don't know what his parents looked like.
He also has a speckled blonde steak from the back of his head to the base of his neck, and a diamondish shape dark brown spot on the top of his tail. He definitley had a pink nose, and now it is brown. His eyelids are chocalate brown, but pads are black(or maybe they are just really dirty ?

Thanks.
