My son and I were watching an Animal Planet show “Miracle Pets” or something like that. The dog’s owner dislocated his hip and told his dog to get help. The dog was a good dog, and ran off to seek help. All of a sudden, my son burst out laughing. I asked what he was laughing about. He said that he was imagining Juney on a walk with me and me breaking my hips and falling down and how he imagined that Juney wouldn’t be very helpful, but would instead lay down with me or kiss me to death or something. Well, I decided to give a test to prove him wrong. Never do that, you’ll lose. My son was on a chair next to the couch and was holding food. Juney was on the couch watching the food very carefully. When I yelled and “fell”, she looked at me, looked at the food, ran over to the other side of the couch to look at me, then ran back to the other side of the couch to continue watching the food, while my son is laughing his head off. Trixie was chewing on her chewie, stopped chewing, looked at me, then went right on chewing. Bunny was too far away to really hear what was going on, but in the past, she has come over, licked me once and then leave.
You can pick more than one choice.

:circle: Never try to get between a dachsie and food! Come on, Mom! Your son might have dropped a crumb, and wouldn't you feel bad if you made your Juney miss that?!? :D
Charlie would definitely lick me to death. He also has a thing with my hair (it's pretty long) when I'm laying on the ground, so he'd have some fun with that too. But there's definitely no chance of him coming to my rescue!

My pups are the best. When I feel down, Miller clowns for me and then gives me kisses as if to say, "It'll be okay, mom". Cash lays next to me and gives me kisses and then rolls on his back and waves his paws in the air for a tummy rub which always makes me smile and Bogart just looks at me sympathetically and wants to snuggle. They do help make me feel better.

After I had my thyroid surgery I got and infection under my scar and it ate a hole in my windpipe, I had to go back in for emergency surgery and had to have a trach for a couple of weeks. I was in the hospital for 15 days and then came home...I missed Pogo so much! I would :sob: :sob: to Rafi every day and would write him notes telling how much I missed Poges. I was SO excited to come home and he just looked at me and pretty much ignored me...he was p***** that I "abandoned" him for 15 days and giving me MAJOR attitude. However, if I get a cold or flu..he's right there giving me kisses and doesn't leave my side...so I voted stays by my side, because I'm going to put the other illness as an isolated event.

It kinda depends on the illness or injury.
When I had pneumonia (sp?) Casey never left my side. I was in bed for 3 days.
When I did manage to get up, he covered me in kisses! :angel1:
I was eating a sandwich and got of the couch to get my tea. I twisted my ankle slightly and screamed out in pain.
Casey got really scared at first then he and came to me laying on the floor. When he saw that I was okay (as I thanked him for his kisses and laughed) He jumped on the couch and scarfed down my sandwich! :fierce: :yikes:
So.....I didn't vote :dizzy:

I think both YC and Oscar would check me out, then go back to what they were doing -- unless some major good food was around. YC will lick me to death if he hurts me during a rough play session -- not really hurt just faking it. Oscar would probably lay down next to me, unless food is around. Dachsies and food go hand and hand.
I think they can tell when we're in real pain and when we're not (faking it).

Angel is very sensitive if anyone is unhappy; she will come climb up on you and lick you to death. Cassie I am not quite as sure about, although when my husband had a kidney stone, both girls were trying to get to him and lick him - I had to put them in the crate.
Faye, it was not fair of your son to have food during the "test" - that is asking way too much of most dachshunds!

want to come and lay with me and give kisses.
I dont know of a time, when if I am down or not feeling good they havent tried to comfort me.
But if dad walked in with some food, I am sure they would forget all about me. :dizzy: :dizzy:

and then get right beside me, look into my eyes (if possible) and lay their chins on my legs. They lay very quietly and wait for me to move before offering me more comfort.
Penny's mom

I fell up our brick steps to the front porch, my son, daughter-in-law and husband were in the family room within ear shot. Penny was with me, when I couldn't get up right away, and was in pain because I hurt my knee, she came to me and licked my face, then went to the door and started barking. No one responded! :help: I finally after a few minutes was able to get up, boy did I let my family have it!! Then, this past month and a half I have been sick with pneumonia, head cold, whatever else, and Penny has been right by my side. Especially when I feel bad and want to lay down, no matter what she is doing, she comes and naps with me! What a doll she is! :luvlove: :luvlove:

I voted - Help you to forget your pain, by putting front paws on your face and kissing you to death.
By chance I tried this last week with Olana - I pretended to be crying and she ran over to me and smothered me with kisses and had to be cheek to cheek with me until I stopped crying.
I shouldn't cry wolf (cry dog?), I know, but I wanted to see what she would do. And she loves me!!!!! yea!!! :hugs1:
Tasha's Mom

Last fall Tasha and I were chasing squirrels in Central Park and I slipped and fell down a hill (I know, we should only chase them on flat ground). I landed on my backside and hurt my hip a bit---what did Tasha do? See if mommy was ok? Oh no, she kept pulling on the leash, trying to go after the squirrel.
In NC on our trip Tasha and I were in a very wet area of beach and suddenly I was sucked down into the wet sand, up to my knees. I yelled, and she kind of looked up at me, and went on with what she was doing. I gave the lead to hoo-dad, so Tasha would get sucked in (I think she was too light anyway) and Rich had to pull me to free me from the sand.
Lassie she ain't, but I love her.

I haven't been down or sick since I got Oliver but he was oh so very protective when his hoodad came home from his surgery at the hospital. Heck, he was trying to protect him from me!

I don' tknow if my guys would be able to get help, if I needed. But when I had a bad headache recently and came home from work to get some rest, they settled down with me on the bed. Seb was sleeping on top of my head! I know he was trying to help, but you know.... Well, I did put up with it because he had good intentions.

Jack has been super attentive to me the past couple of days while DH has been on his ice fishing trip. I was feeling lonely and sorry for myself tonight and starting sniffling a bit on the couch. Jack ran right over and jumped up and wrapped both front paws around my neck in a patented Captain Jack hug and kissed me until I started laughing... we are so lucky to have these little wonders aren't we?

You missed an option:
Drop favorite squeaky toy just out of reach and whine until you get up to pick it up. Quickly grab favorite squeaky toy, move it just out of reach until you finally manage to grab it and throw it. Repeat. :devil1:

My husband recently finished 2 years of treatment for leukemia, and when he was 1 year into treatment, I got Bella as a suprise for him to cheer him up. Whenever we would come home from a treatment and Bryan would lay down, Bella would sit quietly on the bed and stare at him with her big doxie eyes. She always made him smile, and used to do crazy little things to get him to laugh when he was sick. When somebody would come and visit and Bryan was in the bed not feeling well, Bella would growl at them. She's so protective of her dad!

At this point Connor never leaves my side or well my feet. Like now he is under the desk taking a nap. I have really bad mirgraines. So he has learned he must be quiet at times. (yeah not working so far) but when I am puking my guts up and I have to take my shots, he sits there beside me or on my and licks me to death

Spike is my ten year old sons dog, but whenever anyone is under the weather he is right there on top of them, only leaving to potty. On a different note, he is super protective of his boy. We play a game with him where Garrett will lay on the floor and I will say "I'm gonna get your boy!" and start tickling Garrett. Spike freaks out and starts play fighting me with lots of sound effects and play biting (open mouth, never even closing down) It is hilarious!

Unless it threatens their toys, or food supply, my two could not care less when I am sick, injured, etc.
There was NO sympathy for "mum" when I had my knee surgery and was off work for 2 months.
My golden retriever on the other hand, was at my side constantly when I was not well.
I swear if I passed out on the floor, my two would only notice when it came meal time, and then would probably start chewing on my fingers.

I would like to think that Taffy would not desert me if I were injured somewhere. She is very protective of me. I do know that one night when I was having a horrible nightmare, she kept nudging me, licking me and making noises til she woke me up....and then kisses to make me feel better.
Of course, if someone waved one of the puppy cookies in front of her....I might be on my own.

I get horrible migraines that keep me down 3-5 days, and Clay will not leave the bed other then to go potty. (I'm not so sure she is a Mommy's girl, part of me thinks she thinks it's her bed and that I'm not allowed in it alone)

When I was sick, Sophie was right there, guarding me. She wouldn't let anybody come near without "approval" She's a great little guard dog. Of course, she took a break at dinner time!

Cocoa and Me
01-23-2006, 01:44 PM
I voted Lay Ontop Of Me.
When I was really sick a few weeks ago with sinusitus (sp?) Cocoa was soooo gentle with me, and would kiss me and walk so softly around me on the bed. She would curl up on my stomach and not move for as long as I was in bed. After a few days she could tell I was feeling better and her attitude got more "normal" :dizzy: Such a sweetheart :luv: Even my boyfriend (her hoodaddy) was amazed! :cloud9:
Anytime i'm sick and in the bed for a day or two, Charlie has to either be laying on top of my legs or if i'm laying on my side he has to lay on my hip. He sticks with me though till i feel better.

My gang is so sensitive, since I have been on Chemo they keep me going on the bad bad days...I got so much love and empathy from them it is uncanny. They entertain me, give me lots of kisses, snuggle, sit quietly on my lap, at my feet anywhere they can get close...they kiss away the tears on bad days are alway waiting at the door when I come home from the doc as if to say what did the doc say today...don't know what I would do with out them...all of them....

About a week and a half ago I tripped over one of the gates we have up (its metal) and ripped off half of my big toenail! Of course I got hysterical and bawled like a baby. What calmed me down was seeing how worried and frantic Dragon was over mommy crying. He was SO upset. Just wriggling and licking me. I sucked it up because I didnt want him freaked out, and he cuddled me the rest of the night. :hearts:

I voted "Kiss me to death" because, well, when someone falls, GingerSnap rushes up and buries herself under their head, then pops out and proceeds with the kissin'. I'm not sure what the scooting under the head thing is about, just her thing, I guess.
My Shepherd will come and stand by the fallen person and support them while they try to get up. Not the BEST idea ever as he does have leg/hip problems of his own and can be a little wobbly, but he does his best to stand firm and support the weight of a person holding onto his shoulders. (he has extremely powerful shoulders, by the way, lame or not he can pull on a leash like no other!) He'll also go find someone else, howl, and try to get them to come with him if the person can't get up without human aid. He does this with no training from me...he's just such a nurturer that he figured this stuff out on his own.

I voted lie by my side, because that is what Mia has been doing nonstop for this past week while I've been on antibiotics for an acute attack of diverticulitis. She's also very eager to please and kissy.

I voted for the first option of putting the paws on you and on your face, the laying on you, and laying by you. When I am sick Rambo is a huge mommas boy to begin with he will always be next to me and will follow me everywhere. Sophie however is the one who I notice the most out of. She is my little miss independent, but she has her moments of wanting or sucking up to me. She follows me everywhere as well, and has to always be in distance of being able to see me. But when I am sick and laying flat on my back she wants to lay in the middle of my legs/so she can feel me next to her and has her head and eyes viewing up to me so she can see my face. She then is also super gentle and gives me kisses and rubs her neck on me/will cuddle a little. I say she is so independent compared to Rambo b'c she likes to have her own space on the bed and doesn't have to always be next to me or touching me, but when I am sick she gives me way more effection then usual and Rambo tends to trap my face and licks me to death. They def always cheer me up, especially at the end of a long day. I truely can't see my life without them in it.

I have no clue - that hasn't happened since I've had my two! I suspect Jack would glue himself to me, as he usually does, anyway; Lexie might get snuggly, too - she's kind of her own dog and I'm never quite sure how she's going to react to other people's emotions.

Mine will also lay down beside me or lay on top of me. But definetly if I am crying or my back is acting up Rudy will be very concerned and lick and kiss me and try to distract me from the pain.

I just faked crying because Toby is right next to me as usual and he didnīt move a muscle! Hmmm......but heīs always with me, velcroed to my feet so I guess heīd lay there with me if I get sick.
