My Chili is a red tweener...but I'm wondering if she might be red sable. She has predominantly red hairs, but nearly as many black ones mixed in. She looks red...you wouldn't notice the blacks unless you were messing w/ the fur and really looking at it...Anyone have an opinion? She also has a few "blondish" hairs. She has no pattern, and as I said, if you were looking at her you'd only think red unless you started studing her hairs.

She is probably considered a red. My Rudy is the same way.
Red Sables are supposed to have so much black overlay that if you look at them from a distance, you might think they were a black and tan. That is the way I understand it anyway.
I agree though, the way the standard description of sable is written, it is hard to understand.
I have also been told that Red Sables are usually long hairs and that the coloration is caused by the same genetic code that causes Wild boar in wire dachsies. Maybe someone else can comment on that.

I wish I could remember the website for the sable picture....it is a gorgeous black and tan appearing longhair until you study the coloration. The face is red with a very definite black widow's peak and from there back the dog appears black and tan. Very striking.
Is your dog's head clear red? If so, you have a red with a black overlay http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
And Krista you have it correct....sable in longhairs, wild boar in smooths and wires. A wild boar ranges in coloration to appearing as a true black and tan (with the red ears) to a grizzle with the colors all being mixed up over the entire body and head. At least that is what I have experienced.

TextTextTextShe must just be red...she came from a pet store (yes, I know...puppy mill most likely...I didn't know about that stuff at the time...) That's why she's a tweener and probably why her coat is various colors. Like I said, unless you are studying her coat, you'd think she was the regular deep red tone.
