View Full Version : What are your dachshunds afraid of?

I am just curious what our "courageous to the point of rashness" :D little dogs are afraid of.

Angel is afraid of (I'm sorry, Angel, you are NOT "afraid" - you are "wary and cautious" of) fireworks, nail trimming, being brushed, and new things (for the first few minutes, then she is fine).

Cassie (from the same litter and raised together) does not seem to be afraid of anything, except the possibility that we would ever forget to FEED her .

You can pick multiple options.

Edit: I ran out of options or I would have added "the vet" and "new experiences" :) .

OH, I put "my dachshund is fearless" but he IS terrified of the vet. Hates going there. Other than that though, he's pretty bold!

lol Tia is afraid of the vacuum, strangers, most relatives/friends, Golden Retrievers, cat's, leaves blowing on the ground, lots of wind, the vet assistants, nail trimming and wasps. She's definitley not your typical Dachsie LOL.

The only thing so far that Olana doesn't like is the snowblower. Scares the bejeezus out of her.

These guys are scared over the silliest things. The best? When they stick their noses onto a bug- and it jumps! Or stick their noses into a weed pile and a twig "boings" into their face. To see them jump straight up into the air- and then chase the thing that surprised them back down!

I'm not sure if my guys are afraid or not, but thunderstorms get them barking like crazy. Oscar wants to get outside -- I guess to chase the thunder away? Since he was outside most of his life, it's "normal" I guess for him to want to go outside. Their also "afraid" of the draggon (vac. cleaner)

YC is scared of the wind, even a slight good breeze will get him running.

They both get freaked out at the vet and YC hates his nails to be trimmed. Oscar doesn't like his nails trimmed, but he'll accept it -- especially now that I'm using a dremel!

#1-The vet, she shakes the minute we get in the door.
#2- The cat when he tries to play with her by pouncing on her(can't blame her there)
#3- Mommy running out of food, of course
#4-Not getting the all the attention she feels she deserves
#5-For some strange reason, mommy has yet to figure out-Border Collies(the only dog breed she does not like). :dunno:

Low-la is afraid of the dark. She won't go out unless I have a flashlight and keep the beam just ahead of her pathway. If the beam moves, she stops until I correct my mistake. She is also VERY terrified of black lawn and leaf type garbage bags or any kind of black plastic. My theory: She was originally found as a stray puppy and I'd lay money she was stuffed into a garbage bag and tossed. I could be wrong but I don't believe I'm to far off the mark.

Mitch is afraid of the carpet dragon and real estate 'For Sale' signs. He is the silliest thing! If there is a new sign put up on our walkies route he barks at it for a couple days until he gets used to seeing it.

Neither likes the vet or the vacuum. Pixel hates when we leave, Pogo doesn't seem to care when we go....he happily goes in his crate (I think he knows it's more time for him to sleep!)

Pixel is fearless in new situations, Pogo is always more cautious.

Pogo has this REALLY weird thing...he HATES boxes, any kind of box (loves his crate though!) Not only does he just bark at them, but he shakes in terror if you try to put him near, or in one! :dunno:

thunderstorms for Maggie, who also hates fireworks. Vacumm cleaner for Obie, who wants to kill it.

I put "Strangers who are humans" and "things that remind them of past abuse". I think Pippit's greatest fear is anything that looks like a stick(fishing poles, pool sticks, brooms, etc) When he first met my grandmother(who walks with a cane)he was fine with her until he saw her cane. Then he tried taking it away from her. If I am the one holding the stick-type item, he's okay but leary. But if it's anyone else, it's a different story. I guess I can't take him fishing with me and my dad.

Audrey Hepburn has a pathological fear of the vacuum cleaner! :afraid: We discovered last 4th of July that she's not real thrilled with fireworks, either. She thinks she's courageous, though!

BucksBuddy

Buck is terrified of the vacuum sweeper. He will bark endlessly from a hidden area from where he can peek carefully when strangers enter the home, especially men,....some watch dog huh. It is just hilarious to hear that furious barking and then see these tiny eyes peek around the corner. Buck does not like being outside on windy days....it spooks him....he just keeps turning around in circles trying to see which way it is coming from. He is also fearful of big trucks that come down our street (we live near a supermarket) and runs away from the fence when they come by. He is tremendously better every day since we have had him but in general is a scaredy cat or should I say scaredy dog!!!

my guys scared of much except missing a treat. ;)

03-15-2005, 08:11 AM
Aside from the regular fear.....The Vet.
Casey is afraid of Helium Balloons.

Doug bought me a red heart shaped balloon for Valentine's Day.
When I showed it to Casey he ran away and then came back barking at it.
I chased him with it :fierce: he ran and hid under the Big bed.

I had to coax him out with a treat and naturally apologize for being so mean scaring him! :fierce: :)

After a few days we had to let the air out of the balloon and put it away.

Poor Suckie Baby Casey!

Harley LOVES strangers. I said that if anyone breaks in he would probably lick them to death!

As for being afraid, he doesn't like big dogs, sorry Brooklyn! My dad's neighbor has a big german shepard that NEVER EVER stops barking. If the wind blows a piece of paper by him, he barks. He sneaks up on Harley and starts barking at him. The first time it happened he was a little pup and ran across the yard to me. Now he stays clear and if he was human would probably be rolling his eyes at the dog.

Also my neighbor has a golden retreiver pup that is getting huge. She still thinks she Harley's size and jumps on him. So he playmate isn't is playmate anymore.

If he hears the the gate when we leave him alone he will start crying. We have to be very quiet.

And the carpet drasgon - at least he doesn't poop himself anymore when i get that out! :crying:

Tasha's Mom
03-15-2005, 09:14 AM
Poor Tasha is afraid of absolutely everything! I honestly believe she's one of those puppies taken away from its mother and littermates far too early. After her back injury and limited exposure to the outside world for a month, she's much more fearful, and her nose runs as she sits and refuses to walk (is this a fear thing or the cold).....loud trucks, motorcycles, porters sweeping, little dogs, big dogs (though she sometimes barks at those) strangers, paper blowing in the wind, fireworks, thunder...so many fears. She's overcome her fear of standpipes and will walk over metal basement doors on the sidewalk, is slowly making friends with strangers when she meets them a few times and tolerates the tiny chihuahua we meet on walks now and then. She'll get better this spring as more people and dogs are on walkies, but we definitely regressed this winter. Things will startle her on walks and she'll leap sideways into me to get away from them--I worry she'll hurt herself as I'm walking at the time and she can kind of get kicked a bit--totally unintentionally. I never know what might spook her.

Yup, she's a fraidy dog, but we love her. Not her fault!

Let's se Frank is basically fearless except for when Dexter tries to get him to play a chase game then he is scared of Dexter since he can corner faster than him. He will also get scared if I use too loud a voice to scold him for something.

Dexter, he use to be very scared of being held firmly or massaged on the shoulders or hips but he has learned to love those types of massages now. He was also scared of very fast hand movements. I suspect but can't say for sure that he was abused in his first home. He is also scared of getting wet. The sight of the spay bottle (used to correct barking outside) sends him running for the front door. Oh I almost forgot Dexter is leary of (use to be scared) Frank since Frank beat him up a couple of times giving him some nasty bites. Since I figured out the problem was mainly a jealous issue no more fights.

Tanner, tanner is a shy aggressive boy and still fears new people. He also has a major fear of smoke. OTher than those two things he is my alpha dog and basically fearless ready to take on the world to defend his brothers.

Rosco is terrified of the vacuum cleaner! Rosco was really scared of a toad the one time he saw one. Plus he is scared of big black dogs.

Bailey can be scared of stupid things like a rock - yes, many times I have seen her sneek up on a rock and then jump back like she is terrified of the rock! She is definitely the nervous one!

Rosco and Bailey are both scared of nail trimming.

Saren seems to be fearless.

I haven't found anything Buddy is afraid of yet. He thinks the vacuum cleaner is a toy as long as it doesn't come near his toys and then he will defend them. He LOVES the vet, despite the shots and anal gland emptying. Course they pay TONS of attention to him. He can barely wait to contain himself when he sees where we are going and HE drags ME in. He has no interest in the waiting room, he wants to go in the back and play with his friends. He doesn't care about nail trimming. He isn't afraid of people or dogs. He is truly large in stature in his mind. He loves new places, loves to travel with us. He loves the outdoors, snow, loves to swim, doesn't care for rain or love it, but he deals with it. I treat him much like I do my kids; expose him to lots, greet everything with a positive frame of thought so hopefully he will be comfortable and confident wherever he is; much the same as what I want for my kids. He happens to think he is king of our hill and barks at everything within his eyesight. Deer come through our yard everyday (they are quite predictable - same route, same time, every day) and if you say "Buddy, see the deer?" he will run like crazy for the front door and then go after them when he gets out barking like mad till they leave his terrain. Even when the snow got so deep, he would bounce through it trying to get his head above the snow level so they could see what a menace he thinks he is.

We have found a few things he doesn't care for though, but not fearful of. He doesn't like it when the kids go sliding. We normally end up having to kennel him while they are out sliding. If not, I am worried he will hurt himself. He chases them down our hill, tries to grab on to their clothes and stop them. Told you he is huge in his own mind. If he is indoors and sees them sliding, he will go nutso trying to get out to them, to stop them, hence the trip to his kennel where he will nap instead.

He also doesn't care for one of my neighbors girls, but I am not sure exactly why. I have a few ideas though. She is in remission from leukemia and when going thorough chemo, lost all of her hair. Buddy used to go nuts licking her head and she loved it. Now she ignores him, utterly and completely disses him every time she sees him. I think he knows it and doesn't like it; after all no one else can resists his charms. Not sure why, but she won't acknowledge him at all. My dog who loves everyone, has to stay inside when we go out to the bus if she is there as he will growl at her. He will also growl at her from the window; only person we have come across that he growls at. She also screams bloody murder at the drop of a hat and I don't know if he doesn't like the high pitched squealing or if he thinks she is hurt or something. Drives me nutso too so I don't blame him.

Don't think I have a sterotypical doxie from the posts here!

Cricket is only truly scared of one thing. And that is the carpet dragon. Other than that, he will bark at anything and everything but won't back down to anyone but us. And even his backing down doesn't seem to be out of fear.

Dexter is leary of the vacuum, not really afraid just doesn't care for it. Dudley hated it he would attack it the first 5 minutes so the edges of my vacuum has no rubber padding. The one thing I would say he really is afraid of is the leaf blower, he will take off.

Brekke leaves the room when the vacuum is out, and she runs and hides when the lawn mower is running. She also freaks over the large pit bull on the next street - he never used to be in his front yard - but today was the first day in a long time we didn't see him. She absolutely is paranoid about this dog. She is not breed-specific, though! She chased off the friendly pit bull at the dog park a week ago Sunday! :fierce:

Clay is fearless...when she was in school the trainer could not believe she was right out there with the big dogs though she was the smallest.

:D Well Hunter is a big boy wussy He barks at things that are moved while he was sleeping or outside.. He stands there and protest for a long time, then creeps up to it and finally after 10 min or so, will be okay with it..He knows where all things are to be! :yikes: Then Little Mc Guire is open to all new things and he loves everyone, no matter who they are...No Fear Kid.. Sara will bark at the passage of time, but she is only afraid of being in a room with out her Mommy at all times, she moves from here to there for the whole day.. till I sit still... Silly girl, I would never leave her, :hugs1: Now that I have the summer off, I will post her picture here.. :cheer:

I picked Thurderstorms / fireworks for Merry... actually she hates any loud noise. She runs and hides in the bedroom if the TV is turned up too load. She is also terrified of anything that has a high pitched beep. I don't think she would be afraid of thurderstorms except for the fact that that battery backups I have on the computer and new TV beep when the electric goes out.

I picked other for Badger... he puts on a good show but he is really a Wuss. I was out side the other day on the other side of the dog's yard. Badger started barking... So I started barking back at him, walking towards him .. he turned and ran... got up on the porch.. barked again then dove into the house via the doggie door.

Bart is the fearless one. He is not afraid of the vacuum, carpet cleaner or anything I have seen. He has tried to take on a Rottweiler... I don't know if it's courage or lack of brains

Rebel is scared of the vacume and Claire isn't so much scared as just the fact that she doesn't like it, having her nails trimmed. I thinks she is afraid of the file though so I just stopped trying, it was hard enough to trim them and even worse to file them down a bit. She's a wiggler!

Taffy the fearless is afraid of the vacuum, and it gets plenty of use with the birds who think seed throwing is an olympic sport.

She was afraid of the massager that my husband uses on my neck and back. He was working the knots out of my shoulder one night, and he barely touched her rump with it. OMG....you would have thought he shot her....she was outta there  . She has since become used to it, unfortunately, it gets a lot of use...old beaten up body here...but she is never going to get over the vacuum, I fear.

I also checked other, because she must fear starving to death. One cannot enter the kitchen without her checking out the possibiltity of stray food hitting within range of her mouth.:party6:

All 3 of mine will run and bark at the vac. Giz will look scared. They are not too scared of much, except something that makes a noise, like I got this snowman at walmart with long skinny legs and arms when you push a button he would move and sing, they would all 3 run and bark, but Teddy the oldest and the biggest would run as fast as he could all through the house growling and barking like he was NUTS!!!!

López doesn't TRUST the vacuum cleaner but he can tolerate it.

What really freak him out are dark rooms and and creepy noises coming from the kitchen or the stairs. I'm a scaredy-cat myself but sometimes when I'm at home alone at night I'm perfectly OK until he starts growling and staring into the dark with the hair on his back completely on end but not daring to go any further... Then it's always something dumb like a plastic bag settling down or the neighbour opening his door.

He's also scared of big/tall men.

My Joshua is afraid of vacuums, the vet's and cardboard boxes. I have a theory on the cardboard boxes....when I went to pick him out he was in a cardboard box (as a puppy) with his litter mates. Apparantly, he as his mates were kept there all day til everyone got home with the mother dog. So he is scared of boxes. He only becames afraid of vacuums in his later years. He is 10 1/2 now.

My Coney is afraid of vacuums only. He is my rescue. Rescued at age 5, he is 8 now.

Okay, some other dachsie has to step forward and admit to being afraid of small animals (mice, etc.). It's only at 2.35% right now, and Annie's feeling rather alone out there. And FEARFUL! Annie is afraid of vacuum cleaners, small animals, strangers, big animals, fireworks, dust mops....We try to get her to read the breed standard, but it seems she's afraid of books as well!

Molly isn't afraid of anything that I can think of.

Collie is afraid of everything except small animals (likes to harass them in the garden incl. a crab and a parktown prawn). And if he gets a fright he wets himself .... he is a real softy.

Josie is only afraid of me when she has done something naughty. And those high pitched fireworks freak her out. The big bang fireworks sound like thunder and I live in thunderstorm central so they got used to that very quickly.

What is it about vacuum cleaners - Collie and Josie don't like it but they aren't that freaked out by it. I think curiosity gets the better of them.

Not quite. Lexie, who's the most fearless, despises vacuum cleaners. My BF has a remote-controlled vehicle that rolls around on the floor and she tries to bite that. Jack, who came from a BYB (most likely) is afraid of things that jump or fly up and startle him - then he's off to explore whatever it was! Luckily, neither of them are afraid of thunder or fireworks. My last dachsie was, and stormy nights were sleepless nights, for the most part, if there was a lot of thunder. And they are both VERY afraid of squirt bottles!

Oscar and Buck are not fans of going to the vet. Once they are inside the office - they settle down and will even give kisses to the vet's cats who lounge in the waiting room. They will not accept a treat from anyone at the office.

When they see anything different or strange - they are very suspicious and they will look it over - sometimes bark at it - and then do a long stretch to see what it is. Sometimes they jump back and then resume the long stretch until they can sniff it to check it out. So funny to watch!! :D

They are wary of strangers until they get to know them. They don't seem to be afraid of them but it's more like a matter of trust.

Poor Rudy is afraid of EVERYTHING. He spends about 75% of his day in a state of anxiety. I am sure the poor baby was abused and neglected as a pup. I got him when he was 10 months old and he was TERRIBLY afraid of men, anyone who came in the house, ESPECIALLY if they had a black coat on, most noises, and my cats. He is a little better now but he reverts every now and then.

The smell of peppermint, and camphor (I believe). The shampoo I use for them is scented like peppermint, and camphor. Anytime they smell one of those they go running and hide in their cage. I cannot use any icey hot etc. They also are scared when they hear the bathtub run. I haven't even been giving them their baths in the tub for 6 months now. I have been giving them in the walk in shower.

I chose other as Josh hates smoke. Whenever my husband lights the grill Josh is in the bedroom which is as far from the grill as he can get. When we are camping and light a fire he is ready to go inside. He stays in there alone even though he really loves to be with people.
Auggie is afraid of noises, strangers and anything that moves. He likes to go to the vet though and loves the campfire; he wants to sit right next to it!
Gabe will bark at any noise he hears outside, leaves blowing and fireworks.
We don't use a vacum very often but it doesn't seem to bother any of them; thye just get on the couch and ignore it.

Coco's biggest fears, other than fireworks are loud trucks outside when we sit on the porch. We live on a very quiet street, but every once in a while a city truck will come down the street, particularly the trash truck, and he flips out, first he runs to find out where it's coming from, then he runs to me and wants to be picked up.

Otherwise he's pretty fearless.

Bridget is afraid of the sound of the lawn mower, the leaf blower and the weed cutter. When the landscapers are at our condo complex, it is practically impossible walk her. She is also afraid of the garbage truck, and the UPS truck. Even if we see one of those parked and not running, I have to pick her up hold her until we get past it.

Harley is afraid of tall men, something bad from his puppy past. Minnie is only 9wo so we havent seen her be scared yet. She likes people. Loves leaves and the wind. doensn't seem to mind the vaccuum and even went to get her nails trimmed the other day without any problems. Oh wait I forgot. She is terrified of her crate. But that is the only thing. Thankfully we are making progress in that area and she is sleeping alone in it at night, although I am still on the floor with my fingers in the door most of the night.
My MIL's doxie is terrified of everything but she acts like she wants to kill everything and everyone. Hates men. Hates water hoses. not fond of children. the vaccuum is the devil. She will hide for hours after it comes out. But the funniest thing is the pool cleaner. MIL has a pool cleaner that looks like a Baywatch lifeguard thing that swims around the pool. There are hoses attached and a brush thing on the bottom. Prissie will bark and chase that thing around and around the pool for hours. If it comes close enough to the side she will grab the hose and pull it out of the water. We really need to get it on video and send it to funniest videos.

Gromit is terrified of our garbage, recycling and green cans---all of which go out on monday nights for early tuesday pick up...When I roll them out or roll them in, he scampers away. This morning was the first time he took off down the street & I completely freaked out (he had to cross a corner and I lost sight of him. From now on, I will put him inside when moving the big scary cans!

Both my babiea are scared of fireworks but the smokey smell off of a BBQ terrifies them. Both tuck their tails and make a speedy run to my bedroom to hide under the bed shaking so bad. lol:bighug:

my girls both hide from thunder or fireworks.
Cocoa used to hate the vaccuum but we have "gotten over that"!!
Kiki is afraid I won't come back if I go out sometimes she won't be happy tomorrow when I go to the Phillies game for Fathers Day with my brother!
They both hate any dog that is not a dachshund! they actually do this high pitched scream that has people running out of their houses to see if they got hit by a car or attcked by another dog!! :faint:Go figure, they used to love all dogs and then one day decided.."Nope, not a doxie I hate you!!!" Why??? It can be embarrassing in Petsmart!! :faint:they are getting a little better but it is 2 yrs!!! almost now!
So as you can see it is really NOT just thunder and fireworks!!
LOL!!!
I LOVE my girls!! they are crazy like their momma!!:wahooo:

On the way back from Petsmart the other day, we ran into a patch of lightning and thunder. Isabelle nestled tight to me,and I commented to Lisa that I thought she was afraid of storms. The following evening at home we had a huge thunderboom sound off near the house. Izzy was lying near the jungle spot covered in her blankie that Bonnie gave her. She bolted out from under the blanket, and in one leap was on the couch with me, burying her head deeply under my arms, and her body was tucked into me as close as it could be. This confirmed it to me. Our Izzy is a stormchicken.

These two fear the vacuum. They run away as soon as they see me take it out! Other than that they are pretty fearless and love to meet new dogs and people.

LOL I had to check almost everything because my dachshund (Skyler) is afraid of EVERYTHING. Jesse, he's just not keen on strangers, loud noises, vacuums and bigger animals. They aren't afraid to be home alone, they just don't like it.

I took the poll for Dexter who still has a few fear issues and I put afraid of strange people, the vacuum and things that remind him of past abuse. If I would have taken it for Lexie and Logan I would have put they are fearless. Pippin is afraid of strange men. I don't know why, I have had her since birth and she has never been hurt or startled by a man but she is afraid of them until she knows them.

he has to be inside when I mow the lawn. he's pretty good with seperation problems. Crate for long periods, 4 hrs or more. But I can leave him alone for shorter periods like dining or going to the store when it is too hot for him to go in the car. He does not destroy anything just sits in my chair and makes himself comfortable. Good dog.:0210:

My doxies are ALMOST fearless. Thunder, vaccums, other dogs (we have a Great Dane and a Labradoodle in the neighborhood) don't seem to faze them! I credit that to the large doses of love that they have been showered with since their baby puppy-hood.:sillylove:

However (there's always a 'however'), strange people who enter their territory do seem to affect both of my doxies (my lil girl in particular). I'm not sure if it is fear, anger, or protectiveness that they are feeling (or all-of-the-above). If we are walking in the park (or some other area that doesn't 'belong' to them) they don't seem to mind the presence of strangers.

Okay ... I admit I went way beyond answering the simple question ... can't help myself ... I just love to talk about my doggers!!! :hearts:

Depends on which dog.

Lola isn't really afraid of anything.:happy030: Not anything that I can think of anyway!!!

Bocce is a different story..... He is afraid of large dogs, strange dogs, loud noises, strange looking things, strange people etc.... He's my little chicken. A big mama's boy!!! :sillylove: I LOVE it!!! However, I wish he would suck it up a little more!!!:D

My senior dachshund Rusty developed a very strange fear of certain parts of the room. First it was just one corner near the fireplace that out of the blue he wouldn't go near... as if some monster was hiding there. We would have to go get his toys if they rolled there. Then it started with another part of the room which is right in the path of going from the living room to the bedroom. He sometimes just won't pass, and when he does he stays way over on the other side and when he get's near, scampers by as if being attacked.

Oh, and he was always afraid of heights. We had a hallway that overlooked the living room downstairs. There was just a banister, so he could see over. He kept way over to the far edge and ran very carefully...
