What causes the white patches on a Dachshund even though they do not have any dappling on them? My Sammy has just a tiny white patch on his chest. Five gen back all dogs are either black and tan or reds. Now in my new litter one of the females looks like Sammy but her white patch is much larger, she has white on her front paws, black ears with some red hairs, a black tail with some red hairs, she is mostly red but has alot of black hairs on her body. Her mother is a red dapple with the white chest and white paws, she also caries the piebald gene but the father dose not carry the piebald gene. I am just having a difficult time trying to figure out this puppy. Do I just say she is a red, or would the black ears make her a dapple. Also one other pup I swear has the wild boar coloring, but I thought that was only posible in wired hair doxies. If anyone can help let me know I can send a photo. I hope this was not to confusing.

The standard for dachshunds allows a small white patch on chest so it has been occurring since the standard originated. When the puppies are small the white spot can appear large but it doesn't grow as the puppy does so it appears to actually shrink in size http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif You have me baffled by the white feet though unless your bitch is just very strong in that gene.
Is the puppy spotted (light or dark red) anywhere? Many red puppies have lots of black hairs and as they grow up they shed out those black hairs. I would not think that would claim the puppy as a dapple. Just wait and see what happens as the puppy nears 3-4 months of age.
Wild boar occurs in smooths and wirehairs. However, does the puppy appear to be a black and tan except that it has red ears? That is what my wild boars look like as puppies. Otherwise, the puppy might just have lots of black overlay and it, too, will shed out as it gets older.
Love to know how this turns out.

Usually the large white patches and the white tiped feet are whats known as "irish spotting" same gene as for piebald only in this case the amount of white isnt enough to be called a piebald, the puppy is most likly a piebald carrier (she took the gene from her mothers side) http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif I saw her picture on the brag book what a cute puppy http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif I dont know if you said before or not but what color are the parents? Assuming neither of her parents are dappled then she would be registered as a red http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I agree with what Jen and Cindi have said.

Didn;t you say that the parent's pics are in the brag book?? None of the three adults appear to be a red sable...maybe I'm just confused.

The male isnt a red sable .. (see the post about red sables and check out the link i posted there is a pic of a red sable)hes a red.. some reds have some black hairs in their coats that does NOT mean they are sable... the pup may very well be a dapple if the mother is a dapple. Do you have a picture of her where you can see her back etc. I may be able to tell if i could see a picture http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
