View Full Version : How does your pup(s) greet you when you come home?

Just curious how everyone's pups greet them when they get home.
Harley is in an exercise pen so when I go up to get him half the time he's wrapped in his blankie and looks like he just woke up. Other times he's patiently waiting for me and his tail is going a mile a minute.
After I open the gate, we make a mad dash for the door so I can pet him outside so he pees on the bricks. Yep, I've got a submissive peer.

Since we've had separation anxiety issues with Tasha in the past--we must ignored the gated dog for several minutes. She comes down the ramp off the couch, and sits in front of the gate waiting to be released. Sometimes she wanders off, rolls, sees if there's anything left in the kong. If we're gone a short time she might whine, she's better when we've been gone all day :dunno1:
But once the gate comes down we go to sit on the couch with her. If its just me she runs up the ramp, plants her paws on my chest, and snuggles her neck into my neck--my favorite moment of the day! If hoodad is with me she usually goes to him first, and I get snuggles, but not the undivided affection.

Oliver's at the door going crazy. He has this whole little routine where he needs pats when I first get in and then he has to "talk" to me for a few minutes and then he runs to the back door to be let out.

Pogo is in the bathroom on our main floor and we hear - tonk, tonk, tonk of his tail hitting his crate when we walk through the door and usually also here sniffing (he's just checking our id), then we hear - squeak, squeak, SQUEAK from upstairs, so we go and unleash the pure energy that resides in that room and Pixel comes flying at us, we pick him up and he squiggles & squirms the entire time he's being carried downstairs. Then we give loving for a couple of minutes and let them out to take care of business.

When we walk up the stairs, we hear scratch, scratch, scratch at the front door. Charlie is a :bounce: bundle of energy :bounce: and runs all around when we get home. It's so great to come home to him. I love it! :D :luvlove:

They always bark, bark, bark , and Blue always wants momma to pick her up first, just so I can go through the"I want to bite mommy on the nose gently , and then put my tounge up the nose! " routine. Lady Bug, barks, and barks, and just wags her little body all over the floor, not staying in one place for over a second! She is the most vocal. And also the shyer of the two.I love them both so much, I am already wanting to go home from work!!

Pippit spends the day in my bedroom, with the door closed. He's a perfect  during the day and never touches anything. When I come home, he's at the door and once I open it he goes crazy. My favorite part is his "circle dance", he basically runs in a circle(like a dog chasing his tail)as I pet him. It's really cute and the best part of my day.

If husband's home they're out, if not they're in the crate, but always crazy. They jump and whine and Cassie bites toes . They're very competitive and both want attention first. I hate this but have not been consistent with a method to try to stop it (and my husband doesn't help as he doesn't mind it that much).
The Dog Listener book advises ignoring them until they give up and settle down, but if I try, what happens is Angel decides to "discipline" her sister and they start wrestling and get distracted... which I don't think is making my point. Spraying the water bottle seems to help but I need to use it routinely. Alternatively ignoring, spraying, and yelling "No! Get down!" is totally not working - wonder why. My fault!!! :banghead:

I pull into the garage and above the engine noise I can hear high pitched barking and yelping. As I put the key in the lock the howling, whining, barking crescendo builds accompanied by frantic paws scratching at the door. I slowly open the door with my purse guarding what ever I happen to be wearing that I prefer not to be shredded by puppy nails. "Back, Back, Back!!" All three then turn around and run for the baby gate and frantically try to scale it before I can remove it. Like race horses waiting for the gun to go off... as soon as I remove the gate all 3 go flying down the hallway that runs the length of the house....area rugs flipping up and flying in their wake. As soon as they reach the bedroom they make a U turn and zoom back towards the family room and dive out the doogie door.. Free at least..Free at last... We are so lucky we retired a couple of years ago, so Dexter has no idea what it is like to be left all day every day. But, when we go out no matter how long, when I open the cage he flies out like a shot, and jumps and gives kisses, and then runs around like crazy, and if anyone is with us they get greeted like a family member too.

My boys are in their individual kennels when I'm not home. Some times I am greeted by very good boys with everyone remaining quiet (except for wagging tails) till I let them out. Other times I'll hear Frank barking and Tanner crying (I swear he sounds more like a baby crying) before I even get to the door. They seem to know The boy making the most noise gets out last. Tanner is my good boy always quiet except for his thumper tail hitting the wall of the kennel.

Penned! Hah! I have to go down the basement steps to get them!
I lift the corner of the pen, they run around for a moment, then I say "upstairs" and Ruben is "outa here." He can really bound up those steps. :devil1: :bounce: Since Trenyce is afraid of the stairs (thank goodness one of them is Geez  ), she runs around a bit while I clean litter, then runs circles waiting for "Mommy help." I carry her up giving kisses and getting them back. :hugs1:
If they are upstairs when anyone comes in, it's the "woo woo" boy in action. He bounces, and talks, and jumps, and if ANYONE makes the mistake of touching him, HE PEES. :flush: "Tinkle boy" , "Peebody" anyone? Trenyce will come near, then back up, then come near, then back up, until you just grab her and love on her. Sweet Diva brat.
Isn't it wonderful to be so loved? I was gone almost 12 hours yesterday. I was a royal grouch about it by the time I got home. I missed them so much all we did was play and snuggle until bedtime, and yup they got to sleep in the "big bed" last night!!! :hug2:

Well, Casey has Full run of our Sardine Can!
We live in a condo and IF I shake my keys while walking down the hall to my apartment, I get greeted by a very happy to see me Dachsie. I try to ignore Casey cuz he is a submissive peer. He is such a happy pupper to see that his mommy is home. I give him a few minutes, then I love him up!
(Knowing he could pee on me at any given moment) :eek3:
IF I don't shake my keys while walking down the hall to my apartment. I get in the door hang up my coat, take off my shoes and I am greeted by a rather sleepy Oh, your home pupper. That's when I say to him......"Sure Mommies home and nobody is here to ask how my day was! Just sleeping the time away, no worries in the world!" I think then, it's the guilt that makes him dance around me. :um:
Doug gets greeted full force with the barking and whining and dancing! :bounce: :bounce: :cheer: Then Casey comes to tell me that Daddy's home! Daddy's home! Weee Haw Daddy's home!!!! I just Look at Doug and say "Big Deal, Daddy's home." ( I'm jealous cuz he gets more of a Hoop La then me!)
(I work Day Shift and Doug works Afternoon Shift)
When we are both out Casey greets us the same way he greets me when I get home from work! ( Sleepy dog or excited dog...but no barking and whining)

We have our long hallway (now a doggy-proof floor!) gated off. We always hear the feet running in circles and bark-bark-bark-bark. Norby, being our senior, usually hauls himself off the furnature to wander over and say hello. When we take the baby gate out, they run doing zoomies through the house. Then they all fly to the door making their wroooo-roooo-roooo sound. That is the que to hurry and let us out mom (or dad) we need to GO! :circle:

Peanut is full of so much energy , by the time I get home his pen is a disaster, he is going crazy , takes me 30 min to calm him down, stop his peeing from excitment and clean him up. Just like having a baby. :D After clean up, he takes about 10 laps around the house , gets all his toys out of his toy box and were off, :dizzy: untill time for bed, he finnally passes out.

But actually I keep them crated when we are gone. My roommate is home most of the time so they are never in them very long. But when we come home as soon as they hear the keys in the door they start to fuss. Zor has the biggest mouth considering he is the smallest of them all. But we do the outside thing before any one gets to much attention. We have had submissive pee'erz in the past and have learned to get them out fast. Usually someone has to do the zoomies around the kitchen island at least once though. It depends on how bad they have to potty.
But they all seem to do a little check just in case I might have pet someone else while I was away. Oh BOY :dizzy: then I get snorted on.

As soon as the garage door goes up, Clay begins her happy noise, then she's at the door excited waiting for us...Rocky sitting like a good little boy next to her with his tail wagging. One day when I'm off I'm going to capture their reaction to Joe walking in, as it's sooo cute.

I'm in the other- please describe category.
Our furkids are in crates, Tabby yaps at the top of her lungs, goes nuts, when I open her pet taxi door she is too wiggley to hold, she pretty much throws herself at you.
Our other furkids don't bark. Our ACD's come out of their crates bouncing on their hind legs, trying to jump up so we catch them (Apparently they are unaware I am not capable of catching a 45lb dog in mid air, which is why I hurry and kneel down).

Claire and Rebel stay in one room while gone behind a closed door and a baby gate so when I get home I hear Claire pushing the door with her nose making a bump noise lol. Then when I open the door they are both standing there standing up and making silly noises sometimes saying take us outside! :D I have walked in on them a couple of times still sleeping and they come out all sleepy looking, it's cute :)

Snooter and Buser Brown are usually in their crate if our roomie isn't home first. If they're loose they run to the door and you can hear their tails thumping and they are VERY happy little dogs. If they're in in their crate, the crate is literally rocking from side to side (sometimes it falls apart from all this) and you can hear their tails thumping along the sides at full speed! Then, they go bonkers and we run outside for potty! :)

Vienna is dancing around, barking, running back and forth between me and the pantry door (where the awaiting cookies are, they always get a cookie upon our return.)
Stella runs and gets her kong ball....sometimes leaving me standing there with her cookie, calling her....and she will come running ball in mouth.

When I first come home, Mersey waits patiently behind the baby gate in the kitchen. He knows I am not going to greet him until I have had a chance to sort out and throw out my mail. But the "waiting patiently" phase is just the prepatory stage to going bonkers the minute I step over the baby gate to say hello to him. Then it is hard to get him to sit still long enough to pet him!

Otto and Grrrt are behind a broken baby gate, fashioned into the "FORTRESS OF GERTITUDE" where they spend the day on a really cute little raised dog bed with a big doggie cushion on it under a blankie. I open the gate and they make a MAD dash to the door to go potty. Grrrt is so funny when she goes, she toddles so fast! Otto has to jump up on me a little and runs to the door.
Dolly and Buddy are in my bedroom upstairs, and both jump up to greet me and Dolly screams with joy all the way down the stairs, then right out the door to potty.

if he is outside with dh, he zooms to my car (I stop, open the door & call him, lol), jumps in & gets in the back seat. If he is in the house, he stands at the door, barking & wagging his tail. As soon as the door opens, he starts jumping up & down, tail wagging in a blur, trying to get attention. He immediately gets it & then it is potty time, when he goes out, comes running back to me, goes & pees, comes running back to me, goes & does the other & comes running back to me. When dh comes in, he jumps around, tail wagging until dad sits on the couch, then he jumps up in his lap for hugs & kisses. He is so cute when he does that!!!

(spare room that leads to the garage which also houses washer and dryer and eventually an office) When I pull in the driveway and get out of the car I can hear them screaming like nuts. By the time I get into the house and to the bonus room door they are a raging hoard.lol
Jumping, screaming, zoomies, and then outside we go. Wouldn't have it any other way. Our kids are our lives.

If someone else is already home and I pull in the driveway, whoever is in the house opens the door and a dachsie-bullet comes shooting out of the house to greet me in the driveway (whoever is home does this for any family member that is arriving). What a wonderful way to arrive home! If we are all coming home together, it's a scramble and "I want to go in first!" "No, I do!!" to get the first frenzied greetings. We can trust Bobbi now to be out of her crate if we are gone for only a couple of hours. If it's all day while I'm at work, I crate her just to be safe, but the greeting is always the same. I love it!

I live upstairs in a house, so the moment they hear that downstairs door open, they are at the top door, waiting for me. Valentin jumps up and runs in circles. Heidi does the very determined "handicapped hop" up and down on her front paws. NO WAY do I pick her up. She goes diaperless during the day, so it would be instant laundry emergency if I were to pick her up bare bum.
When we move in a week, they will have to be in the ex-pen at my sister's house during the day. I will have to remember not to fill up the water bowl attached to the pen, or there will be water EVERYWHERE when I walk in the door.

By the time I get to the door, he's yipping, and the yipping will get progressively louder until I go over the crate and talk with him... if I have been out all day, well then :kfrown: the yipping will be almost a yelp... until he sees me. :D :D DH says he's a spoiled Mama's boy... but he's my special baby boy, and he knows it!!

Yes, my Lexie often does this, too - "happy play" with a stuffed toy "leftover," usually. When I open the door she'll grab a toy and run outside to do her thing, leave the toy outside, then come back in for petting. (Jack just jumps up and CANNOT wait for petting. No way is he going to go outside without being petted first!)

I pull up at the garage and Collie and Josie are either at the gate checking out the scenery, sleeping or getting up to no good around the back of the house. When they spot me through the garden gate the go bananas. I still then have to put the car in the garage, get into the house and then open the sliding door to the garden. They then rush in and run, jump and make a noise for a few minutes. Josie used to pee herself but she had luckily gotten over that. She is the one that jumps all over me. I usually go down on my knees so she stops jumping. Collie just runs around like a hooligan. Sometimes he fetches a toy but he doesn't actually greet me until Josie loses interest. I think he fears for his safety! I get the same greeting if I am gone for 10min or 10 hours!

It depends. If both of us are gone they are waiting in their crates and usually which ever one isn't letting them out the run too. Ruby of course whines and does a happy dance. If I am home I put them outside for my dh and both of them cry and bark on their tie out till I let them off and they run to him, Ruby whines and tries to jump in his arms. But he always picks up our Mina first.

A comedian recently talked about how his dogs are the only people who treat him like he's the Beatles EVERY time he comes home!!!
That's it here--all of them are in the kitchen/backroom--so when we come in the front door, the barking starts, "We're in HERE! HURRY!" THen, opening the door, everyone has to get/give greetings. I've lately just decided it's easier to drop everything in the dining room, walk in the kitchen and hit the floor--so it's just an all out party for a few minutes.

I chose in ex pen as two of them are; Gabe is in large crate as he climbs over ex pen. When I come in the door Josh and Auggie are often curled up in the same house together- sometimes Josh's and sometimes Auggie's. They stretch, get up and and come the side of the pen to be let out. If I pay attention to them right away and let them out they do well. If I have my hands full and they have to wait a minute it becomes going crazy time! Of course, we go right outside for a potty break and short walk and then dinner is served so they are excited when I come home!
Tucker's Mom

Because I am retired, Tucker only gets left for a max of 3-4 hours while I occasionally do errands. He is in his crate and is quiet. When I open the crate door, I quickly pick him up and head for the outside.............I also have a submissive pee guy; and if his feet hit the floor, we have dribbles. Also, when hoodad arrives home, we try to be stationed in the garage to greet him. Tucker goes nuts and dribbles once again. Rather have that pee trail in the garage than all over the house

Liberty stays outside while we are away at work or running errands. As soon as we pull up she runs to the gate and barks at us to let us know she sees us. Then she'll wait there tell we tell her go inside, and she then sprints to the back door and waits as we go let her in. From there she darts around the house before running into one of us and just goes nuts till we pick her up.

When I leave the house - both my little men are in their bedroom - in their crates so I voted other.
They hear the garage door open and start barking when I open the door to come into the house. They want to be sure that I don't forget to let them out to greet me.
If I have been grocery shopping - I have a little wire cart that I load in the garage to roll into the house with the groceries. They love to sniff around to see what I bought. They don't try to open any bags because they know that when I'm done putting the groceries away - they will get a nice treat for being good.

Most days my granddaughter is home at 3:30 and has them out in the kitchen when I get in at 5:30. Coco gets absolutely nuts when I walk in the door, I pick him up and get my usual face wash. My husband does the opposite, Chanel gets the first pickup from him. Then we switch and I hold Chanel.
On the day my granddaughter goes with her mother I go upstairs and get them out of their crates and take them right out, no ceremony about it, then they get their pats and hugs.
They are such little loves, and don't know how I'd be able to ignore them, nor would I want to.

Once we get home after work our babies jump up and down wanting to lick us all over our faces. They're cute and we enjoy coming home to them. :cheer:

I chose "At the door waiting patiently," which is the case when I'm getting home from work, as GingerSnap is allowed to wander the front rooms when the rest of the family is around. She knows what time I'm usually home and starts hanging around the door then, until I actually do get home. Then she follows behind me until I'm ready to greet her. She doesn't get her hug if she's jumping around like a maniac! Since not getting a hug is grave punishment, she acts calm even though she wants to go nuts, and so she gets her hug!

All mine are at the door going crazy waiting for me to open it. Then they go from the garage through the living room to the backyard to do their business.

Sailor runs to get his bone (he knows he's not supposed to leave it out on the floor) then runs to greet me wagging his tail so fast you almost can't see it! :0210:

Mine are always at the door waiting for me, mostly because I am never gone for long. I am usually home with them. When I do leave them though they go nuts when I come home. I used to have my couch up against the window where they could see out into the yard where I park my car but we have rearranged the furniture and now they look out into the back yard so they can't see me but I swear they can hear my car coming because I can always hear the excited barking when I open the door to my car.
When I come in the door they all race around like little psycho dogs and then swarm my feet. I usually don't greet them right away as Lexie used to be a submissive peer and Pippin is just starting to grow out of it so I give them a minute to race around and then let them out to potty and after potty time we all sit down and say proper howdy doos.
Yesterday was the test run to see if Dexter could be trusted out of the crate when I was gone. I only drove down to the mailbox and back home and he did wonderfully. When I got back home he was right there with all the rest of them barking and making excited little grunt noises like I had been gone for months instead of a mere 10 minutes lol

Jelly Belly goes to work with me, so rarely is he at home without me. On the rare occasion that I do leave him home, he greets me at the door, tail wagging, a few little barks to let me know he's threre, and dancing! It's the sweetest thing. I don't care how bad I may feel, he ALWAYS makes me feel better. He's my :angel9:

My two are outside during the day. When I walk up to the front door, there is a gate with their little heads peeking out. When I get into the house, I go to the sliding glass door at the back of the house to the backyard. They are jumping all over the door (needless to say there are nose and paw prints all over the glass door....) until I let them in. When they get in they run around like maniacs!!! So Cute!!!:sillylove:

When I leave, which isn't often, I have to leave Ringo zipped up in his Sherpa bag, otherwise he's goes crazy and pees all over the place when I get home. So when I come home, the Sherpa bag is vibrating - or more like rocking back and forth from Ringo's wiggling! I take it out onto the patio and unzip it and he comes out crying and wiggling like crazy, jumps all over me and gives me kisses. It doesn't matter if I've been gone for 10 minutes or 2 hours, he acts the same way.
