Lucky looks like a smooth Black & Tan to me. How much does he weigh? That would determine if he is a...
Mini - < 11 pounds
Tweenie - 12-17 pounds
Standard - >18 pounds

I'm actually suspecting that Lucky might be a wildboar. A wildboar has banded hairs- they're red near the base (skin) and black on the tips. It occurs on the longer body hairs- which is why a wildboar looks like a B&T sometimes. :)
Check the fur along his back near the skin- if there's reddish brown at the base, you've got a wildboar. If it's all black- he's simply a lovely B&T with interesting markings. ;)

Ok I called my hubby and he says when he took Lucky to the vet he weighed 14.3 lbs. However when we got him he seemed very skinny to me, you could see all his ribs etc. And we took him to the vet about a week after getting him. Hubby says that his hairs arent red but brown near the base, I guess I will have to look when I get home......
So whats a Wild Boar?
And do these pics give anyone a better clue?

From the pattern on his head I was going to say he was one of the very infrequent sables but after seeing your most current pic's I would say that wild boar is much more apropos. Your husband's comment about brown/not red is soooooooooo typical for a description of red smooth color <G> However, we know he is not chocolate (brown) and since I can see that his undercoat is red, I'll vote for wild boar, too.
Wild boar is one of the normal colors for wirehairs - it's a grizzle looking combination in longer hairs of the wire. Smooths usually get it because they have wirehair in their background....somewhere.

Ok after looking more closely at our baby.....on his hips and shoulders the hairs are dark reddish brown at the base fading out to black about half down. Then along his back he has short black hairs. I also noticed above his hips and along his shoulders he has some longer hair almost makes me think of some sort of schnauzer......

Lucky is so handsome. He also must feel really good with Mom and Dad looking at him so closely. He'll expect this kind of attention from now on. :D

I *love* his coloring- he is really beautiful! He's like the best of the black/tan and red worlds! :) So unique and interesting. And his face is pretty, too, not just the coloring!
