Hi! I noticed today while I was brushing Patch (4 1/2 mos old) that he had some dandruff. I haven't really noticed it much, just while I was brushing him.

I heard of giving peanut butter to help if doxies have dry skin, but I don't know that I want to give this to him every day. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

We give our little ones a bit of extra virgin olive oil every Sunday. They love it and we haven't had the flaky skin prob since.
Saw a posting here the other day about using Head and Shoulders shampoo and Pantene conditioner. If their's comes back we are going to give that a try.

I used to use olive oil, but that added calories and is not a source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Most kibbles have far too many Omega-6 fatty acids and not enough Omega-3 fatty acids (and Omega-3 fatty acids are damaged in the cooking process anyway). This can cause problems such as dry skin and even inflammation. (corn is a major source of Omega-6 so if your food has corn in it, it almost a sure thing that omega-3s need to be added)

After learning this, I tried adding a source of Omega-3 fatty acids to my boys food. I thought their coats looked good before, but now they are positively gleaming and not a flake in sight. Omega-3s have other health benefits as well.

Good sources are: Flax seeds (freshly ground), Flax oil, or Fish body oil. These can be purchased in any health food store, and even at some pharmacies and discount stores.

I buy the concentrated capsules with 1000 mg Flax oil or Fish Body oil. I puncture the softgel and squeeze half the contents on each boys food at their evening meal. I rotate between the 2 oils. Because they are concentrated, the calories are minimal with maximum Omega-3s.

I swear this is the best thing to do for a dog's skin/coat.

As we feed BARF, we add Omega-3 from fish oil (right now it's salmon oil). Some dogs are allergic to flax.

You can also try putting some peanut butter in a kong and let them have at it. They love this and the oil in the peanut butter helps their dry skin (obviously not good to go overboard here due to the extra calories).

deannalew......Max used to have flakey skin when he was a puppy. I have since switched to an excellent dog food, and I think that helped tremedously. I also heard a tip on another board. After I bathe Max, I add some Avon Skin So Soft to a large cup of water and pour it over him. I then rinse, and presto....he shines like the sun, and smells great, and no more flakey skin.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/jacks.gif
