Since little Obie has no hair, what would be the best shampoo for him? I don't want to use something that would be harsh on his skin. Would it be something from the vet maybe or is there something from the store that would be ok to use? I appreciate your advice - thanks!

I don't know all the details, but the vet usually has special shampoos that do help with skin problems and even some oatmeal shampoos that are especially mild as long as the dog is not allergic to oatmeal.

I would check with the vet to be safe. First is bathing safe at this point and second do they have any recommendations as to what to look for or avoid in picking out a good pet shampoo. If he really needs a bath or if it might help his condition my first gut feeling is to consider a coal tar based pet formulated soap. I know Avo products makes one but it may be hard to locate in your area. I believe the AvoDerm Medicated Shampoo (http://www.breeders-choice.com/Dog_Products/skin_coat.html) is their coal tar based shampoo. I use to use it on my Mill Mother Aggie who had very rough skin and poor coat when I first got her.

Coal tar has been used for years as an ingredient in shampoos for humans with dandruff and phorisos(SP).

Good luck

I agree check with your vet. There are many shampoos for different skin problems, I don't think your pet store/grocery store would be that knowledgeable as to which one to use. :D

WHY does Obie have no hair? If it is due to demodex and he is being treated, he cannot BE bathed inbetween. If this is due to something else, is that problem under treatment? If this is going to be Obie's condition forever :( then I would want to use a moisturizing shampoo if he were mine. The vet would be good to advise you on what *type* of shampoo to use and if he doesn't carry that particular kind or you wish to *shop* for your own brand once he gives you the *type*, Petco or Petsmart probably carries a wealth of shampoo brands and there are many adequate ones out there. Just stay away from the brands that would be carried in a grocery store or Wal-Green type store.

No more tears, with conditioner from my vet. I had it for one of my other fosters. She said to use one with conditioner.

From what I understand (help me Heidi if I'm wrong) Obie was born with no hair, a genetic defect. For right now I don't think he'll need a bath, but we are getting rain and there is mud in the back yard and I'm just wondering what to use, just in case :D . I am going to make Marcy & Obie a vet appointment next week, Marcy needs shot updates and for my vet to check out Obie and get to know him, so I'll ask her then. Thanks everyone :wavey: .

From what I have heard you can use baby shampoo---but it is always safer to ask a vet. Good luck

Genetic Alopecia. He is a Blue/tan. He has the usual coat problems that goes along with that color.
He was scrapped several times to ensure that is what it was.
I gave Obie a couple baths while here and I used that gentle baby shampoo she gave me.
He loves baths.

Okie dokie. That explains it. While I know many people love No More Tears, as a groomer I don't find it as good as special dog shampoos. I did have a client who insisted I use it on her dog and always brought it in but I also always used MY OWN tearless shampoo on the head as I just didn't trust it :)

Bio-Groom is a fantastic line of shampoos. Since he is basically a Chinese Crested, sorry but that is what I assume his skin feels like, I stick to my premise that a conditioning/moisturizing shampoo would be good. Bio-Groom has many of their shampoos that are tearless and *special*. You could also just use a conditioner after the shampooing to add softness and moisture to his skin.

If you do wish to use the No More Tears, please dilute it first before using to cut the intensity - most human shampoos are extremely concentrated!

their dog food for several rescue dogs that had terrible skin conditions either due to demodex or allergies. The vet we use the most treats the deodex pups in oral ivermectine (SP) so we don't worry about the dips and shampooing the dogs.

We had two dogs that were crusted due to the scabs from demodex and no hair; within 8 weeks, with meds and the Avoderm we had clear skin and peach fuzz growing.

Good luck finding a good shampoo for your pupper!
