I am getting a 15 week old doxie puppy. When I first saw him his coat was red with some black shading. Now his coat is more like brindle. But he has a lot of red still in his coat. The breeder thinks he will be a red smooth coat. I was just wondering can anyone shed some light on this subject for me? His coat looks very healthly and so does his skin. And color is not a big deal to me but I was just curious about this.He has a great personality so his coat color doesn't change me wanting him.He has won my heart already.

Many red puppies of any of the varieties are born with varying amounts of black. During their puppydom (and even some in adulthood), they shed the black out at varying times and thereby change color. I've always liked the reds with black in their coats because of the various colors they can be in a year. Have a friend with standard longhairs that sometimes the dog only has black on the ears and at other times of the year he is heavily overlayed all over his body with black. Very pretty!

My Red puppies go from almost black at birth to kind of Buff in color with a black stripe down their back to a deep dark red with what I call clown faces almost orange cheeks to deep red then they start getting a black overlay then mohagany with hardly any black then dark red with a huge overlay. This starts at 3 weeks and ends at 6 months so enjoy the RAINBOW!!

Our Annie is a red longhair, or maybe a sable. When she was a puppy, she had a very pronounced "Eddie Munster" black mask on her face, which has completed faded away. She also had a definite black coloration over her shoulderblades that made her look like she was wearing a teeny tiny Italian Stallion t-shirt. That is still there to some degree. I was surprised how much their color can change.

My pup not only has a lot of black in his coat but he has this patch on his check that is white looks kinda like a lightening bolt.
At a baby pup he was solid red with black down his back and the patch of white. Now he has white or cream running through his coat with the black. This only on the body of his coat. His ears and paws and tummy are red. Its strange. He was one of three pups from the litter. His sisters were solid black with the patch of white and his other sister was solid red. My breeder told me there are dapples in his family history. Not a parent but in his grandparents. I am just puzzled about the change.

Great site by Laura Arnett (a fellow poster, I do believe) called "what color is my dachsie" http://www.lnrdachshunds.com/link7.htm She goes over colors and says the same thing that pkmiddler says, just because your dog has some white markings does not make it a dapple.

Please note I am not saying my puppy is a dapple. I didn't want or desire a dapple.
I chose him b/c of the beautiful red shade he was when he was a tiny puppy. Most reds don't have much white on their chest and this pup does. I know there is dapple in his back ground but I didn't buy him thinking I had a dapple. I am not overly fond of dapples. I like "reds". I was just trying to understand the change in his coat. I could have picked a dapple pup but I chose this pup cuz of him being "red". Now he has a coat of many colors. And I am puzzled at where they came from.

Could you maybe post a photo so maybe we could get a idea of what you are talking about?? I have dark dogs as I said these Reds change color as they grow maybe that is it.Also some red to red breedings after a few generations can come up with a white stripe on the chest I have even seen one that went from tummy to lip.So if you can post a photo lets see the baby and give us something to guess better on.
