View Full Version : Other than Dachsunds what is your favourite breed?

I just thought this would be an interesting Poll. Of course we all love Dachshies or else we probably wouldn't be here but aside from them which is your other favourite breed/s? You don't have to include the Dachsie in your list since that is obvious.
I only have a few favourites and they're most likely the only other purebreds I'll ever own:
- Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (this is my all time favourite breed - always has been)
- Belgian Groenendael
- Hungarian Mudi
...So what are yours?

Other than dachsies, I love Basset Hounds!...Ummm Janet, when are you getting your Basset???
Well here's the latest update on the Basset situation. Since we went to the Toronto meetup and Darren saw how much Oliver loved other Dachshunds....I have the GO AHEAD to find a housemate for Oliver!!! :bounce: We thought that just maybe if someone had fosters at the Ohio Dachshund meetup in July that Oliver took a shine to...we could bring a girl home with us. Oliver's foster mom will be there and I've already put the bug in her ear..

I like - in this order!- the following:
1) dachshunds - any size, coat, or color
2) Irish setter - the red and white
3) Scottish deerhound
4) Welsh corgi - Pembroke or Cardigan
5) Irish wolfhound
6) English setter
It is weird, but I like the dogs best that are from my ethnic background - I am English, Scots, Irish, Welsh, and a smidgen of German. Sometimes I think it is an "ethnic memory" thing.

I love my doxies!
But I also love lots of other breeds including several muttz.
There is a difference in what dogs I love but could I live with them. As I have gotten older my list grows smaller. With who is easy to live with.
But even the ones that I am least fond of I can still always find one that the personality is better than most of them.
Big dogs are just to hard for me to handle any more but I have always loved the giants but never owned one.

I'd have to say that DOXIE"S RULE!
Casey is our first doxie and we have plans to get him a buddy!
I can't see having any other breed but Dachshunds.
My past pets have been:
Austrailian Shepherd
Sheltie (2)
Border Collie (2)
Corgi ( he was a stray and walked into our backyard one sunny afternoon and never left! We notified the nearest shelter and the owners came to get him after we had him for 2 months!)
Anatresia
03-29-2005, 08:22 AM
In this order:
Dachshunds
Labrador Retrievers
Those are really the only two breeds I've ever really loved on a had-to-have basis. I appreciate other breeds, though! I like Jack Russells and Min Pins. I must confess, I'm a smooth coat lover! All of the breeds I like have that straight hair. :)
There's just something so humorous and lovable about a dachsie, though. Their BIG personalities and LITTLE tube bodies are just so undeniably adorable.

I have had the following breed of dogs
1. Doberman
2. Mutt ( Best dog ever!)
3. Yellow Lab

I can thank my ex for choosing dachshunds. I LOVE my three- but I also love almost every other breed of dog. My life will NEVER be dachshund-less again, though.
My "other favorites" are the big/giant breeds. Newfies, Saints, Great Pyrenees, Leonbergers, Swissies and Bernies. I just LOVE the big dogs. Bob already knows- ONE day, there will be a big slobbery dog in bed with all of the rest of us. :)
I'm also a fan of anything long and low- both Corgi varieties and Bassets in particular.
I LOVE a standard poodle in a puppy cut. They're just wonderful dogs- that get such a bad rap, thanks to the badly trained toy and miniature sizes and the gawd-awful show cuts. I always turn irrate when some idiot justifies their "labradoodle"- because they wanted a dog with a poodles coat and a lab's personality. I won't even TOUCH the invalidity of that argument based on how genetics are carried- but COME ON! A standard poodle is one of the most WONDERFUL family pets around! They haven't suffered from the massive overbreeding of Labs (which in turn, has created poorly bred Labs without that famous Lab temperament), and dare I say it- aren't the spastic puppies that Labs are for the first years of their lives.
There are very few breeds that I don't absolutely adore- particularly fou-fou toy breeds and short nosed breeds. But I've loved individuals from every breed- so there's none that I can claim I dislike.
And of COURSE- we HAVE to discuss the Mutt. Pound pups are likely the most universally perfect dogs around- there's one to fit anyone's personality and lifestyle. :)

I'm not a big fan of big dogs since I was bit by a german shepard when I was 7 when I was running home to eat dinner. He thought I was playing by running but it really scared me. Then at age 16 by my friend's Bloodhound who didn't like strangers. her brother didn't know I was there and let the dog out of the basement. It bit me right on the mouth and got the outside and inside of my mouth. Luckly, no permanent damage.
So my fav little dogs are:
Dachshunds
Yorkshire terriers
Chihuahua
Minature collies
King Charles Spaniel
Minature Pinscher
Pugs
I always wanted a husky with blue eyes though. i could probably deal with a big dog if I got it as a puppy.

I like all dogs, however, my favorites are (other then dachsie of course):
Rhodesian Ridgeback -- because I in directly grew up with one (he was my Aunt's).
All other hounds -- don't know why, but I like most of the hounds.
Collie -- again in directly grew up with him (not because of Lassie ;) ). If I could get one, I'd get a smooth coat. I like smooth -- short hair -- over long hair

I still love those Pit Bulls and someday I WILL have another one (my mom owns two right now).
I love mutts too. Nothing better then just a pound puppy mutt dog that is your best friend.
My new little guy though is an australian shepard/border collie mix, he is WONDERFUL. Definantly not a dog for someone who wants an inactive pup, but with me having 3 active kids, he is PERFECT.

What other breeds?
Is there such a thing as another breed of dog?
Why would anyone want another breed?
There are enough choices among dachshunds, who needs any other?
Seriously.
I've had other dogs my whole life, but there will never be another breed again. Dachsies are it! :D Done deal!

I read a story about a Scottie. He lived in a house with 2 teenage kids and two parents. They had a big round dining room table, and kept a basket of fresh fruit there. Every once in a while, some fruit would go missing and no one would know what happened to it. All the chairs are nicely tucked under the table.
The teenage boy set up a webcam to see if some neighborhood kids were taking the fruit or something. The little Scottie was caught in the act. He would push a chair out, jump up on chair, then the table. He would grab the fruit, and jump back down again. And finally, he tucked the chair back under the table.
How is that for thinking through something?
If I could not have a Dachshund, I would definitely have a little Scottie around here. And no Gravy Train! That stuff is bad for dogs.

Well, dachsies are my first love, but I grew up with black & tan German Shepherds and a dachsie/beagle mix. So, other than dachsies my doggie list would include:
German Shepherd
Pembroke Cardigan Corgi
Israeli Canaan Dog (my husband is in love with these)
Plus, the little long-haired chihuahua running our neighborhood with no collar and no tags.
I just love dogs, period. I got bit 4 times as a kid because I couldn't leave them alone! :( ;)

When younger I wanted a Carin Terrier. However when we decided to get a dog we got a dachshund as friends of ours had one, and Peanut was just wonderful...being in the apt at the time, we were limited to a 15# animal or under. Clay was wonderful in the apt, as she's not much of a barker. I think she's the funniest dog and I've told everyone I won't be owned by anything else now. Joe has a soft spot for bassets, so we agreed when we got the house he'd get a basset, however when construction began on the house and we began the search for a dog, he said I like how Clay is let's get another dachshund. At this point we'll be a Dachshund Only home.
I love toy poodles, too. However, I don't expect to own another. I am tired of clipping them for 25 years.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis

I can't help but think a Great Dane would be the

After doxies, my favourite dogs would be all the hounds as
-Greyhound
-Whippet
-Italian hound
The funny thing is...
When I was thinking about a dog, I was thinking Greyhound. When the day arrived that we were ready to have a dog, it was my first choice but because we travel a lot... we went smaller and smaller looking for Whippets and Italian hound, ending with Lucie the doxie as it's the same aerodynamic shape without the long paws :D

I love all doggies, of course. Here are a few of my faves:
-Scottish Terrier - I grew up with them, smart dogs.
-Basset Hounds - How could you resist that face.
-German Shepard - Great do-it-all dog
I wold looove to have a Norwegan Elkhound, Siberian Husky or Malamute, as I love nordic breeds, but my current living arrangement makes that not very practical right now.

Mini Dachshunds are my favorite - Especially Buck, Oscar and Topo :hearts:
German Shepherds
Baron - trained guard dog who was so loving with the kids. He eventually had to be put down due to aging problems. I cried like a baby when that happened. :sob:
Beagles
Muffy - who got stolen from our yard and probably tied up somewhere. He found his way home after a long while and came dragging a broken leg. That was many years ago and the vet said he should be put down. Then - they didn't believe in 'fixing' a dog. It broke our hearts. :sob:

I'm lucky !! :cheer: I got exactly, what I always wanted:
wirehair dachsie
Great Dane
Shiloh Shepherd (just discovered that breed and L O V E it ! ! !)
I doubt that I will get another Dane - they just don't live long enough. *bigsigh*:sorry: Looking at Daytona and how "old" he is already at seven years of age makes me sad. :(

Before my admiration for the long bodys I had a fascination with the ol uggy puggys I owned 3.But once i got my dachs my dapple and my young puggy boy fought constantly it was almost as though my dach thought why you giving me that ugly look.So the puggy had to go.My oldest puggy Bubba went to the bridge in Oct 04 and it tore me up.I had him since I was 17.And he lived to be 17.

I love golden retrievers! We have a female and a male- Mya and Maverick. They are the most gentle and loving big dogs and if I didn't like dachshunds as much as I do, I would have retrievers instead.

My daughter and I raised and showed Samoyeds for a few years - I love the breed. Texas is NOT a good place to keep them if they stay outside (mine did at the time) because they suffer in summer from the heat. They are sweet and loving and protective and BIG (compared to dachsies, anyway) and not cheap to feed. If I were to have, and could afford, another breed besides dachsies, it would probably be Sammys. I like Danes, too, although I've never had one of my own.

I have to say I'm a fan of pound puppies. But I am fascinated by the Saluki breed. They are very hard to find from what I'm told and I've only ever seen two of them.

i used to not like dachshunds, i thought they were funny looking!! well, they are, but i'm totally in love with little britten!
my boyfriend has gotten me into great danes - sooo handsome and elegant! and so BIG haha. but gorgeous :)
i LOVE corgis - that smile! and of course long and low ;)
i adore huskies but they need a JOB, i don't know if i could deal with a husky. same with german sheps - my dad had some when he was young, but they had 2 acres!! i have a tiny apartment :P
i love dobermans, too, they're so beautiful. i'm not such a big fan of the huge, thick dogs (rotties, mastiffs, etc) - i like an elegant big dog. of course then i like comical doxies, haha so what can i say?
sometimes i like little dogs - pugs/puggles (so cute, i love the floppy ears!), mini pins are great, but so fiesty/mean if not well trained.. ahh little dogs. there's a tiiiiiny 9wk min pin (red, 2.5lb) in britten's puppy class, i'm excited!! :)

I love Cocker spaniels and Scottish terriers, I've had one of each before my dachshund. Although I loved them both dearly, I'd stick with the dachshunds now. For many reasons.
I've also owned a cockerpoo, black lab, and a terrier mix, but none of them would be my first choice in breeds.

When we lived in Germany, we aquired an abused Corgi mix. We were told she was agressive and could not be housebroken. I Personally witnessed the womans small son beating the girl on the head with a wooden spoon. I might have bit him too.
On first sight I hadn't planned on taking her, but after seeing how she was being treated, I couldn't leave her there. Imagine our surprise to find she was completely housetrained, (for us at least. I think she was just trying to send her last family a message, lol), and not agressive at all.
We brought her back to the States with us when we came home, and had her for many years. One of the smartest and loyal animals that ever came into our family. Second only to doxies, Corgies are definately my choice. We were actually looking for a Corgie when we found Buffy. Couldn't resist the expression in those little soulful doxie eyes though.

I think besides Dachshunds, I would like to have maybe a Great Dane or an Irish Wolf Hound----I like the big dogs (with out a lot of hair) but the Doxie is the biggest dog of all (at least they act that way)

Other than Dachshunds (which I originally didn't care for, actually, GingerSnap changed that.), I like Pugs, German Shepherds, Cocker Spaniels, and Dobermans. And pretty much all other dogs.
About the only dogs I really dislike at all are Dalmations. And anything small and yappy that is allowed to run loose in the street. Which, by the way, our Animal Control will do nothing about as the barking rats "can't hurt anyone." Never mind that they've bitten my sister and my brother's Golden Retriever/Rottweiler mix.

I love all dogs.
But my favorites are:
1. Golden Retrievers
2. Shetland Sheepdog
3. Beagles
4. Collie
5. Border Collie
6. Any dog that has a nice long coat, like Golden Retrievers and Shetland Sheepdogs.

We love Dachshunds. :hearts: :hearts:
We have had in my 60 + years, Scottie, Boston Terrier, Other Dachshunds, Field Spaniel (a great and wonderful dog), A Mutt, German Shepherds (two of them, both good dogs), Airdales (two of them, both good dogs), Norwich Terriers (two of them, one o.k. the other so-so), Smooth Fox Terrier, a Flat Coated Retriever (I was sick for a week when this guy passed away, he was wonderful), Australian Shepherds (both GREAT dogs), and probably a couple more I do not remember. So, we just lucked back into the Dachshunds as far as I am concerned and now that I am old, I will probably not have anything but Dachshunds!

Well, dachshunds are my first love, but I really (and still do) want a black pug. When my sister heard we were getting our first dog, she said, "let me guess, a pug?" - she was surprised when I told her a dachshund! (then we expanded our crew to three!)
My nephew has an adorable Yorkie, Mocha - sweetest little girl, I adore her too! I have this silly phobia - I am scared of big dogs! So, it will always be ankle biters for me.

I love shelties. Had a bunch of them growing up. My mom still has two.
I also love any Hounds really. I'd like to get an English Foxhound someday. Bloodhounds are awesome too, but the drool thing is a bit much for me. I'd love to have a Rhodesian Ridgeback someday too.
I never really considered the Dachshund breed at all until we met our friend's mini, named Lovedog. And seriously, she lives up to her name. The dog was so good and sweet and sang along with her dad when he played piano. Then again my other friends have a mini named Lola who barks and barks and barks and barks and pees on the floor and barks and barks.
But we can guess which one never had any real training. :0210:

German Shepherds (had them all my life and might have another some day if I can find the right breeder)
Australian Shepherds (I have three older ones now)
Great Danes
Standard Poodles
Bull Mastiff's
Black and Tan Coon hounds (had a wonderful one)
Beaucerons
Dobermans
Gordon Setters
Scottish Deer Hounds
I love the mini doxies (*grin, he won my heart as I was NOT a little dog person or so I thought)
I like most breeds actually and could probably live with almost any.

We had three cockers spaniels, Sweetpea, Popeye, and Olive before we got our two boys dachshunds, Joey and Cosmo. Popeye and Olive were great role models for the boys growing up! After we lost Miss Olive last summer we got Miss Vanna to honor her. We loved our cockers but don't miss the grooming:-)

My first choice AFTER dachshunds would have to be Basset Hounds. I imagine I like them so much because they "sort of" look like dachsies. Look at that little face and sad eyes....so lovable.

Dachshunds are number 1, then Golden Retreivers, then just about all others. Really have not met a dog that I did not like, just some of the people who claim them.

Of course dachsies are my very favorite. Then would come any type of hound. I truly love hounds. Then would probably come all other breeds all equally. Basically I am a hound type person. At one point I had 17 blueticks and they all spent more time in my house than they did outside. lol It was chaos. Of the 17, 12 were puppies and it was a wild time at the old homestead. lol In fact the coonhound I have now is one of the ones that was a puppy way back then. lol
