If you have an AKC registered dog and your dachshund has or has had Back problems, UC Davis needs your dogs DNA. If you have a pedigree to go with it, that would be GREAT. This is one good reason why registering your dog with AKC is important. UC Davis has contacted AKC and AKC has allowed UC Davis to have access to any pedigree information they need. This is a once in a life time study. Dr. Neff is collecting swabs from AKC registered dogs that have went down in their back, are paralyzed or have had surgery. They really do not want dogs that "Might" have had back problems but ones that are cart dogs or had surgery and are cart dogs or had surgery and have recovered. If you dog has medical records that prove it has been down and is back walking again (Vet Records) then your dog could participate. What I am finding, as a breeder, is that only the PET owners seem to be having problems IVDD. (Yeah RIGHT!) Well until all AKC dogs with IVDD donate their DNA to this study and Dr. Neff sees that there is a family/genetic likelihood that it is inherited, he will likely not do a lot about studying it. I think this is detrimental to our breed. Of course I believe it is both genetic and incidental (due to our breeds body structure). I know of several dogs out of a certain line that have went down in the back, all related. So I DO believe it has a genetic basis. I also know of dogs that have went down and no other dogs in their lines have ever went down. Of course IVDD is a BIG secret, esp among breeders. I would like to see this change, but I am probably grasping straws. Since many times pet families do not notify their breeders about dogs going down, plus breeders do not usually keep as many dogs as they sell pets, it is the pet population that can help with this study. It doesn't matter if you never registered your dog with AKC, if you was given a litter form, it will have a litter number on it. I know finding this form could pose a problem if it has been several years. I just think after looking at this particular thread of postings and seeing how much of a problem this is for our breed, if the pet owners of the world can help out, it would be a HUGE step in the right direction.
Dogerslist and Linda Stowe (owner of dogerslist) has all the info you need to participate. It is FREE and only requires some cheek swabs which are donated from UC Davis. I think they will even pay for your stamp!!
I ask that PLEASE if you can help, Please do!! (oh there is a questionaire about your puppers as well as the need to obtain medical records)
Maybe someone can make this a sticky so that when new people come here, they can see this!!)
