Well, it looks like we're less than a month away from the 1st annual
Dachsie Day! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/jacks.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/party.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/jacks.gif
From our last thread, I think we are still planning on August 5th for the day we meet. Are we still on? Is everyone still planning on coming? I'm looking at getting finalized directions and plans together, so I was hoping that we could start talking about our fun day again.
I know I asked before, but could I get a count of who is planning on coming...the number of dogs and number of people? If I know who is planning on coming, I will e-mail you very detailed directions. You all can certainly get directions off the internet if you'd like, but I wanted to give you directions a "real person" might give you, not just a computer-generated set. I'll try to give landmarks, etc.
Did anyone call for hotel reservations? I can post the numbers here again if you'd like.
Let me know if any of you need anything.
Karen

http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gif Hi Karen, I'm hoping to attend - 2 or 3 people, 1 small beast http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif. My only snag is that trying to work out a schedule for a weekend visit to my country place for my children and grandchildren. I'll keep you posted, but in the meantime I'll make a reservation at the Holiday Inn. I'll look it up on the last thread. Lanie

Hi Karen!
We still plan on coming to the Dachsie Day in Scranton Aug. 5th. We are 4 people-2 adults, 2 teens- (maybe 2 more adults?) and one dachsie(http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angel.gif). We will be coming from Pocono Pines area (local) so no need for reservations or anything. Just want to meet other dachsies!!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif and definitely the great people from the board... !! Local directions to meeting place is all I need. You can email me - bomar10595@aol.com - if you'd like. We are going to be up there from July 29th and I won't have computer access for 2 weeks then so before that I'll need to know where we are meeting-Thank You and I can't wait to have Lucy meet all your dachsies!!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/jacks.gif
Looking forward to the day!!!
Marci & Lucy (& our dachsie lover family!!)

We are going to try to attend. Willi and I have to do some major convincing to hubby though......he doesn't like long drives. Willi is practicing "The L@@K" as we speak http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

I hate to say this but there are no rooms at the Inn. Pluto & I are wait-listed at the Holiday Inn. They'll call me Friday to let me know if anything is available. I booked the last room at the Days Inn (just in case), but it's a single so I don't know where I'll put my daughter and her friend. Pretty popular weekend. Oy!

I was wondering when we were going to do an update. We're still 3 people and 2 dachsies. Two of the people are willing sitters while we go for dinner. Since we are 3 adult drivers we were considering doing this in one day - & just trading off on the driving.
So Mickamack, we need directions from North Central NJ - Bridgewater or Somerville - 202 - 206 - 78 - I95 - Garden State Parkway - whatever.
the more the merrier - georgette, gerie, gail, gabby, danny

Well, I just went onto MapQuest to see what kind of directions they would give from your town Georgette. They completely lost me! Even when they were getting close to my town, their directions weren't very good. They were making things more complicated then they had to be, so I'm going to have to investigate this a bit more. We want to get you all here safe and sound...and with your sanity in check. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Karen,
What is the closest highway to where you want to meet? I could probably help georgette since I come thru NJ to PA and my husband travels thruout NJ all the time for work and knows every road!! I think you probably would be looking at anything that gets you to I80 out toward the Delaware Water Gap then North thru PA. Karen-how about 80 to 380 to 940 or to 115 or 84? anything like that?

Karen & Georgette, A fellow at Clark's Summit Hotel gave me these directions -- 80W to 380 to 81N to exit 58. The motel is right off the ramp. Maybe that will help Northern NJ people.

Yes, the main part of the directions are getting to Route 80 and then catching Route 81 N. The other site had people getting on the PA turnpike, which made no sense whatsoever. Don't do that. I was working on the directions last night. I'll send you an e-mail or private message.

http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gifThrilled to have you AD and any other newcomers along the northeast coast. We can provide more info than you'll ever want to know about this:
Go back to Special Events and at the top right where it says "show topics from last 20 days" - change to "Show all Topics". Now go to "Northeast Dachsie Day", then on to "100 days and counting". Skim and save the important stuff.
Have fun - hope to see you on the 5th - it's
coming up quickly, hmmm?

Hi Augie's Mom! We would love to have you come join us. Is Manchester near Harrisburg? My husband is from the Baltimore area, and we travel 83 quite often going for visits. If so, directions would be easy as pie for you, and it would probably only take you about 1.5-2 hours to get up to Scranton.
For you and anyone else who's been reading this thread and wondering what the details are, I'll try to give them to you in a nutshell.
We have meeting on August 5th, a Saturday. We don't really have a rain date, but just are hoping for nice weather. Some people are getting hotel rooms and staying overnight because they are coming from further away. We are planning on having the event at my local high school. They have a nice big old football field that is completely enclosed with a chain link fence. This way, we can let the dogs run without worrying that they'll run off. Later in the evening, we might all meet again for dinner in the evening. In case you haven't guessed, I live near Scranton, so I know the area.
If anyone has any questions, just ask. Well, it looks like we've got 19 days and counting! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif

Augie Dogie and Augie's Daddy will be there! Just need directions to the school from I-81. Is it above Avoca (airport) I worked in Wilkes-Barre so I know land marks. What time is the meet?
Did anyone think of contacting channel 16? If the turn out is going to be big (even 10 hounds), I think that they would want to come out and get a story being our only common thread (besides our love of our puppers) is this internet message board. Even channel 28 or 22, heck, all three. Their web sites all have area to put this sorta stuff in. Do a press release.

Sorry about that Augie's DADDY!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/rolleyes.gif Whoops on my part!
Right now we've got about 16 people and 9 nine dogs. Glad to hear you know the area a little bit. I think we're all going to meet in Clarks Summit. That's nice and close to where I live and the area has several hotels which will allow dogs.
I don't think we've settled on a time yet. I have to call the school and find out if they'll be having football practice and what time it'll be over...my guess would be noon, but I was going to call later today.
As I get a few more details, I'll let you all know. I sent some people emails with directions on them, did any of you get the emails?

I worked in Wilkes-Barre, I'll be able to make it, but I need to know the location of the school if that is the place. Noon is fine!
Aug and I can be up even earlier than that.
Got anything else in the works. Football field would be a great place to race or something.

Hello! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gifhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gifhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gifhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gif
I just wanted to get back to everyone about the times for dachsie day. I tried calling the school and talking to the athletic director about when the football team might be finished with practice on Saturday. Every time I call, he's not there. I ask others and no one knows...so I'm not getting much help here.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/disgust.gif
I will try my best to keep on them next week to find out more info, but until then, I don't have much info. In a worse case scenario, if we can't find out an exact time and we show up while the team is still practicing, there is tons of room all around the school. Plenty of play room. The grounds around the school are vast and in most of the areas, there wouldn't be a problem with cars or other people. It's rather quiet and unpopulated up in the country.
I have one other question for you all. At one time, we were talking about going out to dinner in the evening. However, with most people not staying overnight, does that change dinner plans? I mean if we play for a few hours, then would you all just rather go on home, or wait to go out to dinner? What would you all do with your puppers while we were eating a yummy dinner?
I just figured I'd ask. We can certainly do whatever you guys want. If most are going to stay for dinner, great! I would just need a count, so I could make reservations somewhere. If most are going home, that's fine too. And if just a few felt that dinner was something they wanted to do, I would be game for that as well.
One last thing, if some people were hanging around for part of the afternoon I just wanted to let you all know of some of the things you could do while you're here. We have your typical malls and shopping stores. We've got Steamtown National Park, which is a train museum. We've got the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, which takes you on a tour of a real coal mine. The tour is fascinating and gives you a new appreciation for how hard miners worked. It's one of my favorite recommendations for out-of-towners. We also have a really great antique shop right near my house. Great furniture and antiques.

When I work out my details, I was planning to stay for dinner. I'd leave Pluto in the room http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/crying.gif either in or out of his x pen. Will he be happy - I doubt it. You mentioned something about a local Italian restaurant. Is that still a possibility? Sounds good to me. Is the area outside the football stadium gated? Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Karen!!
Can't wait for the big day!! Just so I'm on top of things wanted to let you know we would only be there for the afternoon (antiques, maybe too?) but not dinner. Maybe next year but since we'll be staying in Pocono Pines, I think we'll head back after the dachsies have had their fun.

Hi all! I've been struggling with the directions to the school a little bit. I asked some other people how they would direct you and everyone at first, came back with different suggestions, but then they all said, "Well, there's no easy way to get there from here". It's just that there are no major roads or highways...you're kind of out in the country. If you knew the roads, it's easy as pie, but for people coming out of town, I'm afraid to let you all just try to find your way there by directions.
Originally, it sounded like most people were going to stay overnight in the hotels in Clarks Summit which was going to be our central point. However, now, we only have 1 or 2 people staying there. Most are coming in for the day only and leaving.
So, given that, I'm going to suggest something else. I would like to suggest a different meeting point. For the people staying overnight in Clarks Summit, I will meet you at the hotel and you can follow me to the meeting point. And then for everyone else driving right here, we'll just meet up at the meeting spot.
Does that sound ok?
For everyone I e-mailed, I sent you directions to Clarks Summit. Even if you're not staying overnight, those directions will still be good if you want to stop and get something to eat on your travels, but then to get to our meeting spot, you will want to get on Route 81 going north again.
You will go up one more exit to Exit 59 - Waverly. From Clarks Summit, I would guess it's about 3-4 miles up on Rt81 north. When you get off at Exit 59, go to your right. Almost immediately you will see a Mr. Z's grocery store. We will meet in right in the Mr. Z's parking lot. There are some drop boxes for the Good Will in the parking lot, so if we congregate around there, we can keep track of where everyone is.
From Mr.Z's, it should take only 10 minutes to get up to the school. We can either caravan or carpool. It should be easier to just follow one another there than anything else, I suppose.
Does anyone have a problem with that? I will work on trying to find a clear map. If I can find one, I will send one to each of you, if you'd like.
Lanie, you asked if the other areas were gated and the answer is no. The ideal is the football field because it's gated, however, if need be, there are acres and acres of open land. There are 2 or 3 baseball fields and 1 spare practice football field, in addition to running areas for the track team. All these areas are far away from roads, other people and cars. They are just big open areas with nothing around them, so if we keep an eye on our furkids, there shouldn't be any problem.
I think there'll be so much activity with all the dogs and people and food, that they won't want to wander too far. Besides, if we took them to a dog park, they'd be in a similar situation wouldn't they? But then again, I've never been to an official "dog park"
Does anyone else have any questions? I'll try my best to answer them if I can. As we're getting closer, I'm getting really excited, but nervous at the same time. I just hope that we all make it here ok, and all the details start to fall into place. I'd just hate for someone to be upset with me because I forgot something or didn't plan something right. I'm trying my best, so if there's something any of you need, please just let me know.

Scranton is in Northeastern PA, up near the Poconos. That isn't anywhere near you is it? If so, you're welcome to come. We'd love to have you.
Most people seem to be coming from about 2-2.5 hours away. So far, I think the furthest anyone is driving might be Mrs. F, from Maine. That's probably a 7 hour drive!!! Although, she's not sure she can make it. Hopefully, things will work out and she'll be able to come.

Actually it is WAY away from me, probably a good 12 hours but I wouldn't think twice about making that trip if it wasn't for Missy Ann's condition right now. Maybe next year! That is if it is an annual event. I would love to meet all the sweet and compasionate people on this board including the person who introduced it to me...GEORGETTE! and all the dachsie puppers who own them. Unfortunately I am afraid it would be way too much for Missy Ann so I will look forward to the posts of the events. I have completed a set of directions to the football field. It might be a good idea to still meet at Mr. Z's, and drive up together. But if you'd like a set of directions, I can email them to you. That way, for those not staying, you can get yourselves out of there.
As for a time, I am still having trouble nailing people down to an exact time, so why don't we say 1pm. We could have made it earlier, but if we have a few people planning on coming in from a longer distance, like Mrs. F and Weenie, I'd want to give them enough time to get here. Would that work for everyone? It's just a suggestion and we could certainly change the time...I'm pretty flexible, since it's about 5 minutes from my house! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gifWhatever you guys want to do is fine with me.
The school is only about 5 miles from Mr. Z's parking lot, so it shouldn't take us very long to get there.
In case for some reason the football field is unavailable or not really a good place, I have found a pretty good alternative. Only about 1 mile from exit 59 is a township-wide playground with 3 baseball fields, for little league. One of the fields is completely enclosed with a gate and the other 2 fields are enclosed on 2 of 4 sides and the 3rd side is a line of trees.
There shouldn't be anyone up there at that time. It's not like the playgrounds of more populated areas. Most kids around here play in their yards, but go to this park only if they have a ball game.
As far as going to dinner goes, we can certainly still do it if you're still interested. That Italian restaurant, Rossi's, would be a nice place. I would just need to make reservations by Monday or Tuesday. It's a small place so reservations are usually a must, unless we feel like eating at 9pm! It's about a 15 minute drive through some small towns, but worth the drive. Is that a problem? If so, just say so, and we can find another place. There are tons of restaurants here, both rest. chains and local favorites.
Right now, I've got me, Lanie's family and Georgette (her sisters???) who said they'd like to do dinner. Is there anyone else?
7 days and counting!
Have a great weekend!

Just as a side note, I found out this morning reading the newspaper that the Moscow Music and Arts Festival will also be the weekend of the 5th. For those who will be travelling on Rt 380.
It's a WONDERFUL festival and it's one of the things we absolutely try to do each year because it's so nice. They have great music, incredible food, and lots of artsy stuff. We ususally get something there every year.
Here's what the ad says... "Over 100 Fine Artists and Crafters * 150 Handmade Quilts (which are beautiful, by the way) * Hot Air Balloons * Revolutionary War Encampment * Admission $4 - includes all entertainment and activities"
The dates are August 3-6 noon to 10pm. Directions are Exit 5W or 4E off I-380. You will see signs and it's at the North Pocono High School Campus. Free parking and shuttle service.
I just thought I'd mention it, in case anyone was interested. We'll probably be going 1 or 2 nights for it.

Karen, you gave me directions to the school. Are we going to a playground? Where is Mr. Z's?
I'm going to leave NY about 8 am. I was going to check in to the Holiday Inn first before hooking up with you guys at the school. So clue me in as to exactly what and where. 1 PM is fine with me. Just point me in the right direction.

Well, let's see if I can answer some of the questions...
Lanie, I sent you directions to the school because you said you might not get to our meeting point on time. Mr. Z's is only a meeting point, right off the exit of Route 81. Once we all gather there, we all were going to drive to the school, which is about 5 miles away.
At the school, there is the football field we have already talked about. On the school grounds there are a few other places we could go if we needed to. However, if none of those work, I found yet another spot, which I told you about in the email I sent you. I was just trying to find as many alternatives as I possibly could.
But for right now, most people are meeting in the parking lot of Mr. Z's at 1pm, so we all can drive up to the school. You can either do that, or go to the school directly if you don't think you could make it to Mr. Z's on time.
Does that answer some questions? If not, just let me know.
As far as what we want to do for food, I don't really much care. We can bring food in coolers if you'd all like, or we can get lunch each on our own. It doesn't make one bit of difference to me. You guys are the ones who are travelling, so it's up to you. I would suggest bringing a blanket and/or chairs with you because the ground is likely to be wet. It looks like rain up to Friday, but Saturday still looks nice, in the low 80's.
I wouldn't do too, too much for lunch, if we're going out to dinner that night. The restaurant opens at 4pm, so we can go any time after that. The restaurant gives you a lot of food, really good food
If we meet at 1pm, play for a few hours, then make dinner at 4:30 - 5pm...how does that sound??? Just a suggestion. Please let me know how that all fits into your schedule.
pluto'slanie
08-01-2000, 02:25 PM
I don't mean to be a pain in the "you know what" but Mr. Z's is off rte. 81 at what exit. Do you know it near the Holiday Inn?If I leave around 8, I should be there in plenty of time to meet at Mr. Z's. We'll find you - we'll just follow the doxie trail. See you Saturday.

Mr. Z's is right off Exit 59 - Waverly...the same one I gave you in the directions for the school.
When you're coming off the exit ramp, go to your right on Route 632. Mr.Z's is a supermarket that will be immediately on your right. I will be waiting in the parking lot by the blue and white drop boxes for GoodWill. I have a red car. Don't worry, there will be 2 chocolate dachsies with their heads out the window of the car...you can't miss us!
Good...we'll all be able to meet at 1pm, then?

Ooohhhh, the torture! Ok, I want to meet all you guys, but my mommy went too far yesterday!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/mad.gif
She told me that I "needed to get ready" for Dachsie Day on Saturday. What did she mean, "get ready"?
First, I went to the room of doom yesterday. I HATE that place! The doctor had to look at a tiny lump near where my giblets used to be before I got "fixed" (Hey, I wasn't broken, but don't get me started on that one!). He said everything was ok, so then we went home.
Mommy then brought out the clippers! AAAAHHHH!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/eek.gif She got Daddy in to help her out...I'm going to have to get him back for that one!
Then she put me in the tub and gave me a bath! I know, the horror! I shivered the whole time. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/caffeine.gif I was just getting good and stinky, and then mommy had to go and ruin it. I would have really impressed you all with my stink! And last but not least, mommy cleaned my ears. Oh, the indiginities I have suffered!
I just wanted to let you all the know the sacrifices I made for our visit on Saturday. I only hope for your sakes, that you don't have to go through the same things that I did.

Poor Mickey.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/kfrown.gif My mommy's not doing anything special for Daschie Day - she said so what if I have long nails and a little dirt in my ears. I think http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/think.gif she's getting use to my "scent" -- she doesn't think I smell funny. See you Saturday.

Ya gotta know by now that those hoomans are weird. When they take baths and do things with tools to their nails they call it a spa - and ya know what? - They PAY for it with real money.
Now I'm going to be thinking of a way for us to "bottle" that dachsie scent of ours and sell it to hoomans to puts in their baths. We will probably make millions and millions with that, don't you think?
I also went to the room of doom - at least the lady gave me 5 treats for being good.
But I'm supposed to watch my back for awhile so they aren't going to clip my nails - I mean because I squirm too much and it isn't good for me (he-he).
Hey I can't wait to see you on Sat. I'm going to make Mom check those directions that she saved.
Smooches,
Danny

I had the chance to post before I will be computerless again for a few days... IT WAS GREAT!!! Lucy had the best time!!!! Can't thank you enough, Karen!! I really hope we all do it again next year (or sooner!).
I think Lucy is seriously in love http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/love.gif with Mickey He is the right size for her to handle! But she loved all her new friends!! And her family loved meeting all the pups and their families too! Go NORTHEAST!! I hope you all had a good time at dinner, too. Can't wait to hear more about the rest of the time you all spent.

Thank you for putting this on and letting us visit at your house! I hope Mic likes the Augie treats that we left.
The meet was great. Got to see the other doxies and hoomans in the area and made friends. Well...... in one case maybe too friendly http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/eek.gif
Aug slept the 2.5 hours it took to get home. He was really out of charater today, very sleepy. I guess the weekend wore him out.
I will get my pics posted as soon as they come back.

http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wavey.gif Hi Karen, Thank you for putting this day together. Pluto had the best time http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/party.gif and Liz and I did too. I'm so glad we could participate.
Pluto was exhausted and still hasn't come back to himself. He's not use to so much exercise. We loved meeting all the attendees -- it's always nice to put a face to a name.
Tomorrow, I'll recap the day for those not lucky enough to live in the NE. I'm looking forward to David's photos. If mine come out I'll see if I can scare up a scanner and post them. Thanks again!

Go Karen http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angel.gif Go Mick http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/ksmile.gif Go Chris http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/shy.gif
Thanks for being our hosts for the very first Dachsie Day. The weather was great and the dachsies were cute - what else?
In attendance were:
Pretty Karen and her adoring husband, Chris along with trim little chocolate Mickey, & Karen's Mom Marilyn with chocolate Oscar, , & Marci with little black, lg-haired Lucy, & her husband (Marci's not Lucy's) & 2 sons,
& Lanie with her daughter Liz & little Pluto & David with lover baby Augie , (who LOVED http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/kiss.gif Pluto)
& Georgette, Gerie, & Gail with Big Bad Dan plus Princess Gabby
Memories:
Mickey in the lead followed by dachshund by dachshund by dashshund by dachshund dashing madly around the baseball field;
Everything seemed fine when Georgie held Lucy so she didn't think much of snuggling Augie - butBIGBADDANsaid "I don't think so" and proceeded to CLENCH HIS LITTLE WIENER LEG BETWEEN HIS TEETH, HANGING ON FOR DEAR LIFEhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/eek.gif Well Georgie tried to get rid of Augie by tossing him at sister Gail whose legs got very scratched until Augie's Dad Dave managed to separate them.
Augie = no damage
Dave = punctured finernail
Dan says he cannot believe the furor, for some reason the whole party http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/party.gif dissembled at that point - until dinner anyway.
Who's house next year?????? You're welcome here in Bridgewater if we can contain you-know-who. Maybe we won't invite him.
We missed Heidi & Linda (of NJ)
Georgette, Gerie, Gail, Gabby Princess, & Danny http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bad-boy.gif
