View Full Version : Stupid Question about Size...

I just ordered some hug-a-doxes for my three and I am now questioning if I measured them correctly.

For my 7 lbs Bailey, I measured an 8" neck and 14" girth. For 9 lb Saren, a 9" neck and 15" girth. For 18 lb Rosco, an 11" neck and 18.5" girth.

Bailey is what I consider to be a VERY small dachsie. Yet, the size I ordered for her was a small. They come in two sizes that are even smaller. Do these measurements seem like they are in the normal range for these sizes of dogs? Or is it possible that I am an idiot who can't measure properly? :)

Maybe the other sizes are for tiny 2 to 5 lb type dogs??

I was nervous, too! You're measurements sound in line with what I ordered, though I don't have anyone that fell into the small category.

But don't worry- the harnesses are WILDLY adjustable. And she makes sure that the measurements fall within the range of the harnesses she sells. I really liked working with her- she answered all my questions and was so kind to correct the major mistake I made- swapping the neck measurements for the chest measurements! I was SOOO afraid that she'd be making funny skinny-chested, gigundo necked harnesses!

When I ordered, I gave them Oliver and Tammy's chest and neck sizes and that's it. So I don't know. I know that Tammy's chest is deeper than Oliver's and Oliver's neck is bigger than Tammy's..?

The difference between neck and chest seems right with the weights that yours are. Oliver (13lbs) is a 13" neck with an 18" chest and the lady on the phone said, wow, he's a REAL guy isn't he? She was talking about his neck size.

So did you measure at the base of the neck (the thickest part) and the deepest part of the chest? For Roscoe I would measure him just one more time to be sure. Seems like a small neck.

You can call her and make sure they have the measurements written on the order. They will then adjust the harness to the exact size you need. The one I bought at the Expo is a little big around Schatz's chest and she offered to take it and resew it so that it was perfect. I figured Schatz was still growing so I told her it wasn't needed. April is great to deal with.

I was worried too when I ordered Dexters, it is a little big on the chest, but I figure he is only 10 mo. and may fill out a little, I wouldn't worry, they can be adjusted a lot.

Gunners and Petunia's fits real good, I don't put it on them real tight. As long as she has the neck and the girth--which is the heaviest part around your doxie you should be ok. They are ajustable. Petunia being only 8 months has enough room to grow into hers.

I just ordered Casey's hug-a-dox and I was worried about his measurements.

His chest is 18 inches and his neck is 11 inches. He is 8 months old and weighs 16 pounds. Now I'm thinking maybe he is over weight :yikes:
He doesn't look it and he gets plenty of exercise!!!!!!

:hugs1: Janet,

Speck was the same way - he was 15.1 lbs @ 7.5 months old - he was 15.8 lbs a few months back at the vet. But he's just a "big" dog all the way around. Looking at him from above, he's not a big sausage shape (like Suzy) - his tummy area goes in just a little. He was 18" in the chest when we ordered his hug-a-dox back in December. So Casey's probably just right, too. ;) Casey reminds so much of Speck anyway - looks like a feisty, crazy, fun little guy!

Actually Janet, it sounds like Casey is very similar size to Rosco. He has slimmed down a little so he might be a little less than 18 lbs right now. Makes me feel better about my measurements.

When you get your new girl, she will only be half his size!! That's how Saren and Bailey are compared to Rosco too!

Edited to add: We DID think that Rosco's neck measurement was proportionately smaller than Saren's and Bailey's so we did measure it again. We think that Rosco might just have a small neck!

Hi your not stupid, i felt the same way when i was measuring for my little pup Bouncer, i think he was about 5 months old and he fit perfectly into an extra small Hug a Dox Harness, but now he wears a regular small...he's between 7 and 8lbs. and he'll be one on June 6th...you are measuring the same way i did and i made out fine....the harnesses are great, i wouldn't have him in anything else...very easy on the neck and they look sharp in them too!! have fun shopping!!!!
take care,

You will love them and so will the doxies. They really do make a big difference on their backs. It is so hard to tell when the pups are still at the age where they can gain a bit of weight filling out. It is one of those guessing games. But as was said they do have room to grow into them.

We have been using the hug-a-doxes for a week now!!! I DO think that I measured Rosco a little bit wrong. His is a little tighter than the girls but it still works great!

I have been loving their hug-a-doxes and highly recommend them!
