Good Morning!
I have some wonderful news! Lucy is home with her foster mom, now permanent as of last night. When you hear this story, you will not believe it!
Now, Lucy has been missing for over a week, she has been sighted off and on as you know.
I got the call last night, and I myself am in shock and very very happy.
Her foster mom has spent the entire weekend looking for her with no success. Someone on our rescue list had her get in contact with a dog communicater, I am not making this up. Anyway, she did and the woman said that Lucy was near water and to bring another dog with you.
She took the day off yesterday and went to a swampy area that was near where Lucy was lost. She said within an hour she saw Lucy about 30-40 feet away. Lucy bolted. Some time passed, same thing, and then she bolted again.
She sat down with her dog and about another 45 minutes passed. Her dog started barking and she could see Lucy out of the corner of her eye. Lucy came up to her and she scooped her up. She said while driving home she kept her hands on Lucy because she was so afriad to lose her again. I have goosebumps just writing this.
Needless to say, there is one happy dog and one happy woman today. When I talked to her last night she said Lucy had lost quite a bit of weight and is covered with ticks.
I am so so happy for both of them. This woman has been so upset and has spent so much time looking for her. She really loves Lucy, and now Lucy is where she belongs.
Lucy is one lucky dog to even be alive.
Well, you have been wanting a happy post, I think this one covers that.
I don't have good news on Queenie. For now, lets enjoy this and I will post about her later.

I am so happy that she was found. That is amazing. Wow. I'm also glad that she is OK besides the ticks and needing some extra food. I guess I am going to have to change my mind also about dog psychics.
Had yall looked in that area over the weekend? Do you have a picture of Lucy that you can post? I'd love to see the sweet little face that I'm been praying for.
And I'm so glad that Lucy (opps.. Sadie) is now at her new home. I am so happy for her new mom also.

Andrea, So happy to hear about Lucy. I sent you a private message but decided to ask here as well. I adopted a bird dog puppy in August named Rufus. Well, while I was out of town Thursday my neighbor who was looking after my babies greeted me when I got home Friday to tell me Rufus had dug out and was missing. We have called all the appropriate people, filled out a missing dog report and combed the neighborhood...nothing. The only clue we've had was a neighbor saying they saw him following a couple. I guess he followed them home cause we can't find him. Last night while outside calling his name, I said to myself...where are you Rufus. My 2 year old said, "Rufus is in the star mommy, see" and pointed to the star in the sky. Yes, I burst out crying! So Andrea, if you can, please let me know how to contact the animal communicator. Maybe she can help me bring Rufus home.

Hi Folks,
Well, I gave a happy story yesterday, sorry I cannot repeat it today.
Queenie is back in the hospital. She had a horrible night. This poor girl. I put her in a fleece coat and took her back this morning.
One of her slides came back, it's some sort of chronic bacteria, we are still waiting for the other one to come back. She is back on IV's today, and we are switching antibiotics yet again. We need the second slide to come back to know exactly what we are dealing with.
My vet said she has never encountered something like this. She is actually calling some of her colleages to see if they have any ideas.
Poor Queenie, she coughed all night, her eyes are running, and she just is still so sweet.
She always looks so sad when I leave her, it just breaks your heart.
So, lets keep those rays coming, and if you could forward a few hours sleep, I would love that.

Do you have a Vet School Hospital near you? I know that we have a great one here especially for rare conditions and is usually very up on the latest research. I know that ours here gives the rescue groups a discount also.
Sending more hugs and prayers.... We are all thinking of you and Queenie.

That is so sad - we were all so hopeful - how incredibly hard to leave her although at least with people who take good care of her. It really puts things in perspective - after I visit here all of the little daily nonsense that people fuss over seems so trite.
OK we must refocus our concentration. I know you hate to post difficult news but please keep us informed - looking for the silver lining - maybe you can take a nap?

Andrea:
This is unreal. I think you need all the medical opinions you can get. You've got to know she's a fighter from all that she has endured. As Georgette said, it isn't easy to have to post discouraging news but you know we are all pulling for both of you. This has probably become the most important and first place everyone looks when coming to the board.
All our love and prayers are with you 24/7,

Thanks Guys.
I just got off the phone with my vet. She has Queenie on an IV and a strong dose of Batril.
She also has Queenie on a bronchol diolator, to help her breath. She said she is in trouble at this point. I am beside myself right now.
She spoke to a cardiologist to see if they thought maybe that could be involved. He said no. My vet said she is cultering out bacteria, from what she said it has to do with Queenie having chronic bacteria.
We are still waiting for the other slide to come back.
I just wish I could go home. This poor girl. I am going by after work to see her.
I am just so upset right now. She just can't seem to kick this. They have her wrapped up in blankets and she is resting now. She is still eating well, which is a good sign. I just don't know how much she has left.
Please send those prayers and rays her way today, I knew she was worse, I had no idea this much though.

Andrea,
You might want to look at the following page on Ehrlichiosis: http://www.srv.net/~cdm/Dale/ehrlichia.html Evidently is is not that well known among the general veterinarians and it came up several times when I did a web search on "pneumonia, chronic, dogs). The paper presented at the above site appears to have the most complete listing of references. I have no way of knowing if this looks even remotely like what is happening to Queenie I'll let you read the paper. Perhaps it has already been ruled out with test already completed by your vet.
Good luck little Queenie, we are all pulling for you. Thank you Andrea for being such a kind caring person.
Best wishes,

Andrea,
Got a hold of my neighbor and found out that she is starting next fall and isn't in the program yet. Sorry, I thought she was already in it. However, I am going to just call over to the Vet School and see if someone will help.
Also, I found this on pseudomonas. Not sure if it relates. The first question looks like it may relate. According to the article pseudomonas is a common bacterial cause of pneumonia in dogs. It goes in depth about different drugs and treatment.

Andrea,
This may sound like a stupid question, but, could the condition of her mouth & teeth be what is PREVENTING her system to kick the pnemonia? I just can't help but feel this way. Of course, there is NO way at THIS point that they can work on her mouth, and that is what is SO unfortunate. The bacteria from her mouth is causing this, I feel at least. But, of course the Vets would know this. If only they could take care of her mouth NOW, I feel it would help. This is so unfortunate. Could they maybe TRY and take a chance? Or would that definately kill her? GAWD, she's gone this FAR, SOMETHING has to work!!!!!!!!

Cornell Vet School (NY), Fort Collins Vet School (CO) & Davis Vet School (CA) will all give opinions & advice, as far as I have heard.
There is also a subscription website that is just for vets, maybe your vet can find someone who is on it.
Is Valley Fever any kind of possibility? I know it usually is found in people & dogs in the SW U.S. & northern Mexico. Do you have any idea if Queenie has ever been there?
Do a search on Valley Fever, & you'll find the symptoms.

Cornell has a bunch of vet consultants your vet can contact. All the lingo I found is in "vetspeak", so you might give him/her the address: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/public/research/vetmedfield/faculty1.htm
Maybe someone here can help with a diagnosis. Nearly all of them have a click-on e-mail address.

I talked with a couple vet friends, and tho they were kinda loath to give an opinion on a dog not their client . . . they told me that there is a new strain of kennel cough that is rather antibiotic-resistant. Also, as with humans, an infection in the mouth lowers the whole immune system as it goes to the heart and lungs. Like Susan said, it may be something to look at. Push your vet into calling in markers from her school and other vets who are more into bateriology(sp) and/or pathology. They see weird stuff everyday and may be able to give a different slant to this. I'm sorry, Andrea, this sounds like it's more than your average pneumonia . . .It's time to push your vet for other possibilities.
My heart, prayers, thoughts and love are with you and Queenie. Big hugs from Isobel. We're here for you!

You are all fantastic! I cannot get over the info you have come up with!
I have printed off the pages that Tom and Jennifer sent. I am going back to the vets tonite and will bring it with me.
Mary, you have a point. I think you have all seen what Queenie's mouth looks like. I'm sure that has something to do with her condition.
I know when I first had her, my vet said that the infection in her mouth most certainly has spread through her system. We were concerned about her internal organs.
Queenie has had the sample taken from her lungs, and that is supposed to be in today. She actually has 3 vets attending her case now. So hopefully we can find the right meds for her. She has been on so many.
I took her home last night. She was taken off the IV late yesterday afternoon. She is on her new meds.
She slept through the night, but wasn't awake 5 seconds and she started hacking away. I can't stand it. She ate her breakfast though.
When they brought her out to me, her tail was in overdrive, it was so cute. She was so happy to be back home.
Anyway, any other info you find, let me know. Hey, I just thought of something, you are all going to be officially called
"Queenies Angels" has a nice ring to it.

The fact that she came home last night, and is still eating is GREAT! So evidentally she's out of "trouble"!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif I'm just SO AMAZED at how she keeps pluckin along.
Now listen, if only the Vets could work on her mouth & teeth SLOWLY, little by little, she won't have to be "out" as long. I know you mentioned about her jaw too, that the bone is infected. Can they take x-rays of her mouth and see if they can do something? I relieved to know that she is out of immediate danger.

Morning!
Well, we had a rough night, but then the Queen gobbled up her breakfast. I am at a loss.
I had a board meeting last night and 3 times I had to stop, because Queenie was trying to run around and went into a major coughing fit. When she does that I literally have to hold her until she settles down. This girl has no idea how sick she is! She is absolutely amazing!
The third time, I laid on the couch with her and fell asleep, so much for my meeting!
I wish you could see her in person, her eyes are running, she is coughing like crazy, but she is a pistol! I am going to be in trouble when we get this girl well!
Last night she somehow got hold of a small stuffed bear angel I have, I let her keep it. When we woke up this morning, Queenie had it under her head!
I dropped off those articles last night to my vet, she is looking at them.
Queenie, not to be gross, did get some gunk up last night, so we are still dealing with an active chest, and when she coughs, you can really hear it.
Her mouth, thats going to be an ordeal, it is just so bad. I don't even know what the plan is with that yet
I told Queenie how she is a celebrity, I hope she doesn't ask for her own room!
Hugs

Way to hang in there Queenie. Perhaps many of our good thoughts, rays and prayers have been intercepted by that bear angle and now that Queenie has found it (or it found her) and she is keeping it close they will all surge into her and she will start getting better. Glad to hear that she is eating and holding her own. I've got a good feeling about her. That's funny about the toy. Hopefully, it symbolizes that she doesn't need a whole angel at this point, just part of one. Or it could just be that she's being a typical dachsie and chewed up her toy....
Sending rays to Queenie that she gets well enough for the treatment.

Hello to Queenie's Angels
She had a tough night. Woke up about 2 am, and then again at 4 am. Coughing like crazy. When she gets going good, it takes a while for her to settle back down.
She goes back in tomorrow morning for another xray. My husband was concerned this morning, before she had even moved, she started coughing and sneezing.
So the roller coaster ride continues. I am hoping the xray will show some improvement in her chest. I'll let you know.
I have one piece of good news. I picked Queenie up last night, and she is starting to sport a slight belly. Thats what is so weird, her appetite through this whole thing has been great. I guess I am grateful for that.
Don't forget to send her daily dose of Rays.

More rays on their way. She definitely is a little fighter with a strong will to live. Putting on a little weight is good. Lets hope a little extra strength will give her what she needs to kick those nasty bugs. The fact that she can still bring the gunk up when she needs to is good, her body still has the strength to be fighting. I hope the x-rays are good news even if her lungs haven't cleared up too much more we hope there isn't too much more scaring developing.
Best wishes,

Hi Folks,
Queenie is at the vets now, the xray came back bad again.
I was hoping that wasn't the case, but the last couple of days, she has really been sounding bad, and last night my husband didn't think she looked good at all. She is running a temp again too.
I'm leaving in a few minutes to go see the vet.
I just can't see what else they can do for her. Again, she ate her dinner last night, but not as she usually does now that I am thinking about it.
I'll let you know what the vet says. This poor little girl. I just want her better. We are now going on two months of this.
I think we need more rays

Andrea,
I know you are very tired, almost as tired as Queenie gets coughing and hacking, at this point in her illness.
One rule I've always lived by is one of appetite. If the she still is eating and drinking, then this fight is still on. Queenie will let you know when it's time for you to send her on, if that's in the near future.
Both of you- stick to the Plan for now and more Rayzzzzzzz and hugs coming from this end of the country at you both!<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm37.gif" border=0>

Hi My Friends
I have talked to a few dear friends tonite. I am so very upset.
Queenie's xray came back very bad.I spoke to my vet at length, and she asked me if we could start the steroid treatment.
I hate to be the one to make this decision. Queenie's body continues to fight itself, and her xray, is not good. My vet said she was " optimistic"
She also said, that Queenie has been fighting the pneumonia for 2 months now, and she cannot do it any longer.
I gave the go ahead for a low dose of steriod treatment on her beginning tonight. I am so very afraid.
I cannot take her home, which makes it worse, and I am so very scared right now.
She has so many people pulling for her.
I know when we woke this morning, Queenie's eye's were running, and her nose was as well. She was coughing, but that darn tail was still going.
I hate to say, money is becoming a factor, and that is killing me. She is such a fighter. My vet says she is defying all odds, and most pups would have passed by now.
Please bear with me, I am very emotional right now. I had hoped, there would be some improvement at this point. After the last couple of days, even my husband said that she just looks so sick.
Again though, she is eating, and giving kisses, and I cannot give up on her! If she had no life left, ok, but that is not Queenie!
I cannot, and will not , give up on her.
The procedure she is beginning tonight, can very well kill her. Please, say a prayer. All of you love her, as much as I do. I keep telling her how many wonderful people love her besides me, there has to be a reason that she is still here.
I again, am at a low point here, so please forgive my post. I cannot bear to lose her at this point, and I know you can all understand this.
If He choses that she be with him ok, I will still be here for her.
Please, keep her in your thoughts.
Andrea

Andrea,
My thoughts are with you and Queenie tonight.
I keep starting sentences and deleting them. I can't find the 'right' thing to say.
I admire both you and Queenie for your strength. She really is a fighter and has the best 'coach' in the world.
If only love could cure her.
Take care Andrea. We're all behind you.

Andrea,
I know it is much easier for those of us who have not held sweet little Queenie and felt her hart beating and received her kisses to give advice or make suggestions. I suspect you were fast approaching one of two options. The first the one you have chosen is to go ahead and give her her best shot at beating this bug that is slowly taking her down. Without the steroid therapy it appears the odds are against Queenie. Despite her weight gain of recent weeks the bug is eating away at her and may even be causing some long term scaring of her lungs. She has already proven that she is a fighter and if will to live can improve her change of surviving the treatment I feel she will pull through. The other option that you must know has been slowly creeping up is to admit defeat and say her quality of life is getting too poor to make her keep fighting. From reading your post I don't know if I could make a decision like that.
It's hard to give up on a fighter. When I had to say goodbye to my Aggie this spring it was obvious she was not going to get better. When I went in to caress her while the vet gave the final injection it was the only time she didn't respond when I walked into the CCU. She had been in an oxygen cabinet for most of the night and her blood O2 levels were way off. It was obvious that her body was failing her and she had lost her will or at least her ability to fight. Sorry I just had to take a break for a minute these are the first tears for a while. So you can see I really didn't have a choice which made my decisions more easy to make.
Even after getting Frank and finding this great group of people for support I was very depressed for the rest of the spring and much of the summer. I feel for you and for Queenie. She will be in my thoughts tonight. I suspect you may be like I was the night before I lost Aggie. That night I fell asleep exhausted but knew from what I has seen the night before that there was very little chance that I wouldn't have to say goodbye to her in the morning (I don't mean Queenie has very little chance). I woke up at about 4 AM with a start and was suddenly wide awake. For some reason my first thought was Aggie had just died and all I could do was cry. When the phone rang at 6:00 the vet started to tell me of Aggie's current condition (I had expected to hear she had died). She was relieved when I ask if it was time to say goodbye and she ask that I not take too long getting there. I was relieved that at least I could cradle her head and whisper to her that she would be able to sleep and no longer hurt. Being there at that pint was the hardest thing I've ever had to do but I couldn't let her go without my being there. I've rambled too long not every thing I have typed may make sense I've been typing between tears that still needed to be shed for Aggie and some new tears for you and Queenie. Frank is sitting at my feet trying to comfort me.
Tom, the boys (Frank and Tanner), and my little angle Aggie sending our wishes that you and Queenie may have many years together before you have to say goodbye. If Queenie doesn't pull through my little Aggie will be there to greet her at the bridge she too was a puppy mill mother who passed on before her time.

Andrea,
I totally agree with Wotansmutti. As far as the steroid treatment, it was time to take the chance. I hope this helps. Remember, miracles DO happen. Queenie has proven to be such a fighter, hopefully she'll pull through this. I'm thinking of you both.

Andrea, it was time to take the chance on the steroid treatment. My most fervent hopes that it does the trick.
She isn't alone at the vet's tonight--Queenie has the love and hopes of all of us there with her.

Andrea,
I also can't find the right words to say. I keep erasing and retyping. I am sending prayers for you and Queenie. Hoping that the night went well for Queenie. And some hugs for you. I agree with the others, that no matter what the outcome, you did the right thing by taking the chance. You have given so much to Queenie, especially love.

Andrea,
I too am sending my thoughts and prayers for Queenie...poor little girl. I will also be praying for you too. I can only imagine how your heart hurts to see her like this and to have to leave her for such risky treatments. We are all so concerned for the 2 of you.

All my love from NJ. You have given Queenie hope, that is why she is hanging on. That is the greatest gift you could have given her.
