My little mini 8 month old Dachshund is shedding so bad. He gets groomed almost every day, but if something stresses him out you literally see the hair falling from him. For example, I clipped his nails last night and I couldn't believe the pile of hair on the floor when we were finished. Luckily, he's not getting bald spots. Is he in need of a certain vitamin?

My pupper doesn't do this, but it is a common sight with our cats, particularly when they go to the vet. They blow their coats real bad then. Have you tried supplements like salmon oil? You'll get better answers from the more experienced around here.

hello cllawson! :wavey: Cricket, my smooth red, doesn't do this, but what are you feeding him? Could it be from his diet? I know there are supplements out there that many on the board use so I will let them tell you which ones might help. Again, welcome!

Oh poor baby! I do think it's probably stress related. I know we've had some Salukis that do it. One car ride, a lot of hair!!

Can you maybe give him some rescue remedy before nail trimming and other traumatic events?

Really, I wouldn't worry about it too much. A lot of animals of different species do it, and as long as he's not going bald....

Oliver does not shed at all...unless you take him to the vets (don't wear white). Then he blows his coat.

My 1st Doxie only shed if he was stressed like taking him to the vets, or cutting his nails. Dexter does shed, but his hair is thicker. I noticed when the weather started to change he shed a little more than usual.

Gunner and Petunia shed a little bit but not much. I would try Salmon oil or Fish oil on top of the food.

Thanks for the suggestions! Jake was malnurished when we adopted him in January. He's gained a couple of pounds and appears to be much healthier and happier pup. He munches on puppy food throughout the day and gets canned food with his older brother (a dapple dachsie) every evening. I'll try the oil on his hard food and see if it makes a difference. I was thinking that a little t-shirt or sweater might help too :)

Welcome to the DBB :wavey: :wavey: Mine shed too, so I've started adding Mrs. Allen's Shed Stop to their diet and it works in about 2 weeks there was a huge reduction, now the only time they shed is when they go to the vets or are stressed.

I believe by clicking on the bone at the top of the page marked store, should take you to Sitstay.com which sells the Mrs. Allen's products.

Good luck!

and it works wonders on their coats. My foster Buster was shedding terribly and he is a smooth mini also. After a couple of weeks on the Nutro his shedding stopped entirely and his coat is thicker and shiney.

Penny is a smooth mini and she sheds when she is stressed or excited. You should see my husbands dark blue work pants after she has been on his lap for a while!! Lots of hair because she gets so excited to see him. She never sheds for me, I don't excite her :circle: Someone mentioned Shed Stop, my Mom uses this for her dog (not a doxie) and she says it works great! Maybe you are grooming too much? I wipe my dogs with a washcloth at night because they sleep with us, but I don't "groom" them everyday. Just a thought. :)
