I drove past a puppy store today. They had signs in the windows saying what breeds they currently have for sale. The list included several breeds and there were 2 signs that read "exotic colored dachshunds." I was so curious what they meant by this. I was also annoyed that whatever color they have they are calling it "exotic" to make a sale. I have a feeling that what they have are dapples, because I can see a dapple being described that way. I may stop in, out of curiosity. Interestingly, I also passed the local animal shelter on the same ride!

Seems like all of the so called exotic colors are ones that have health problems associated with them... which is why you find them in Pet Stores.. because the only people breeding specifically for them are Puppy Mills. The Public is so gullible... of course the people who pay $1,000 or more for a double dapple are also cut from the same cloth as those who pay outrageous prices for designer dogs like Labordoodles... AKA mutts (Nothng wrong with mutts... but why pay that kind of money as opposed to going to the local shelter?) People research the type of the car they want to buy more than they do the pet they may have for 16 years or so. Pretty sad.

What I've seen described as "exotic" colors in dachshunds are usually the ones that happen with a lot of breeding of recessive genes, what one of my friends calls "dilute breeding". They usually do have a lot of health problems due to the breeding. Unfortunately, as Karen says most people don't research the dog they're buying and just impulsively buy one that's "pretty" or "cool looking". :sigh:

If I get a chance I will stop into that puppy store. I'm just curious about the dachshunds. I want to know what the "exotic color" is and how much they are asking for them. I'm glad I got Oscar for free. Every time I buy him something I justify it by saying that at least I saved money when I got him.

It would be interesting to see what an "exotic color" is and I'll bet they want big $$$ for such a rare dog.

One question--Is it true that if I go into a puppy store and play with the puppies, there is a possibility that I could bring home a disease like mange, kennel cough or parasites and give it to Oscar? I read that many puppy stores encourage visitors to play with the puppies to help socialize them, but if the conditions in the store are not good, there is risk involved. I assume that I'd be fine.

I've been up all night reading on the internet about pet stores and puppy mills. I became a lot more curious when I saw the sign about the "exotic colored" dachshunds! So, at least for me, that ad was a total turnoff.

I wish I knew more about Oscar's history, too.

There is a good chance that a puppy in that type of situation is either sick or been exposed to puppies who have been sick with Parvo, distemper, kennel cough etc. Of course the same can be said for any little puppy that some one brings into PetsMart for the first time and everyone has to goo goo over. :dizzy:
If you do play with the puppies ( hard to resist) just make sure that you wash your hands really well before petting Oscar... as an extra precaution you might even want to leave you shoes outside and spray the bottoms with a disinfectent. The puppies in the store 'should' have had they shots... but you just never know what they have been exposed too.

From working in rescue:

Kennel Cough can stay on clothing for 30 mins highly unlikely you could pass it to your puppy but you should take precautions

Parvo cannot be killed by disinfectant it is a hardy virus and can last for 1 year in a premises or on items

Mange is generally transmitted dog to dog and studies have now shown that it is also related to a dogs immune system so a healthy dog with strong immune could have contact with mange and not get it. Puppies are susceptible though. Human form of mange is scabies. You can see if pup has mange as it starts around the eyes and mouth and hot warm spots.

You could take home a tummy bug to your wee fella.

The MAYBE's are endless. I have to say that I vaccinated my dogs fully and then gently exposed them to different things like kennel cough and rescue dogs to build up the immune system (would NEVER expose them to parvo). I make sure they are strongholded regularly, wormed and health checked.

If I have been in contact with rescue dog I generally come home, go straight upstairs, remove clothes, into shower, wash clothes and then greet my dogs.

My dogs have never got ill even when I come home from a puppy mill visit.

Well, I will see how much time I have to do this but I am very eager to go on what I consider to be my undercover pet store mission! I will keep the health concerns in mind and take precautions if I go to the pet store.
