We were told that this is a long hair but at 6 months this is what she looks like. I have seen pictures of long hairs that have hair probably 4 or 5 inches long. Does the hair get long with age or is this about it?

Some longhairs have longer hair than others. They do take time to grow into their longhair also. IMHO she looks pretty perfect.

Long hair dachshunds very greatly. I Think it's bee posted here a few times that it can that up to three years for some of the LHs to develop their full coat.. I current have two LHs Frank is a small standard red his body hair isn't that long but his tail has exceptionally long hair, his ears and around the legs are also longer than the rest of the body. Tanner on the other had has a very dense coat but it's only a couple of inches long except for his ears which have very long hair. His tail was the last thing to fill out, he was pretty close to a rat tail when I first got him. He was a rescue boy just as all my adult life companions have been.
Maggie looks very similar tro what Frank did when he was six months old.

Ooohh what a beautiful girl. I can't give my opinion on long hair because I've never had one but I know beauty when I see it!

I have one longhair girl now, and she took more than 2 years to develop her full coat. Her name is Brekke (brek-kuh), and she will be 4 this July. Some longhairs don't get their full coat until 3 years. When she was spayed at 6 months, I began to notice longer hair on places besides her ears, chest and down her spine. The little "feathers" on her legs began coming in.
You will have fun looking for her longer hairs to come in! Keep posting piccies - we love 'em! This is Brekke at the end of November.

She is definately a Long Hair! She's gorgeous! We got Link at about 15 weeks of age he still had puppy hair, he then lost his puppy hair and was just sort of mid-length haired and very soft. I'm pretty sure her hair will be FINE! She's still a baby and now with spring/summer approaching may not get the LONG hair until fall. I wouldn't worry. She has the sweet face and eyes of a "longy" and from her picture, I can tell she has the wonderful personality too! Give her some time, the hair will grow! Now that Link is almost 2, we had to get him groomed to cut some of his tail hair off! It was so long that when we walked he picked up every stick and leaf off the ground in his tail!
Patience is a virtue! Hold tight, it will grow, and grow and grow!!!

I have two longhairs, and they do take a while to develop their coats. As Heidi's Mom said, it may not fully grow in until they're two or so. And knucklehead is right, your girl has that sweet gentle look of a longhair. She's just gorgeous!
Here's our Annie at about 6 months. She never ended up with tremendously long hair, but as an adult she has nice long ears and "feathers" on her legs.

some of them take longer than others. Cassie has always been fluffier than Angel, who reminds me of your girl. Angel has a beautiful soft coat, but just a little feathering on her sides. I suspect Cassie is going to be one of the very fluffy ones when her coat is done developing.
You can kind of tell the difference in this picture.

Here is Angel about the same age as your puppy... so you can tell that even she has gotten quite a bit furrier. It's probably good if her hair stays shorter; she is not crazy about being brushed. :)

My two long hairs have totally different lengths of coats. And they have the same parents (different litters).
Kali has a fairly short long coat. Most of the long hair on ears, legs, tail & rear

Presley has a LOT more fluffy fur. My dh calls her a 'hair ball'. ;)

I think it really varies dog to dog :)

I still miss having red longhairs. That is what I started with years ago. But with having had several with longhair they have all had different coat lengths. My blk/tan girl Ivy has an extremely thick coat and we say she is fluffy. But I think part of the extra thick coat comes in after she was spayed. Not going through a heat and false pregnacys took a lot out of her. Actually it was her grandmother. (but they have the same type of coat). I hate to say it but if we go up North to the woods much this summer it is going to be coming off. She hates to have burrs brushed out and I hate to be the meanie to do it too.
BTW your red puppers are so pretty. :muchlove: :muchlove: :muchlove: :muchlove: :muchlove: :muchlove:

I have a long haired puppy also. He is 5 months old. Defintely a long hair, we met his parents and grandparents. I was starting to wonder about his hair also. I figured he would get the long hair much later. We just went to a pet expo this past weekend and i had many short hair dox owners telling me that he wasn't a mini and he wasn't a long hair! :dizzy: He is a baby still, mini and long haired. I think he is just perfect. Here are some pics of our baby Kona.

I had a lot of people tell me that Bailey wasn't a mini when he was a puppy too! I think by mini they are thinking 6 or 7 lbs. Bailey is about 11.5 pounds, so some places classify him as a mini and some classify him as a tweenie. Its ok whatever he is, I still love him!

sure he's a longhair - look at those fuzzy little ears  . His daddy and grandma are beautiful, too. As far as mini, can't help you there... I have one mini and one tweenie, both bigger than their mini parents. Hard to predict. :D

Had you asked their opinion or were they just throwing it at you unwanted? People!!! Sometimes they don't know when to just observe and shut up....
He is obviously from longhair descent and from the pictures, the adults have very flat coats with not a ton of furnishings but these dogs would do well doing what they were bred to do which is hunt. This type of coat will not pick up everything laying on the ground and will still protect the body. Usually this type of coat does not appear early on in a puppy's growth (certainly not at 5 months old but as long as you have wisps on the ears, back of legs and tail - he will eventually get some more length) except in a few areas.
At 11.5 pounds at this early of an age I would think your puppy is not going to be a regulation (in the show ring) miniature as they are defined as 11 pounds or under at one year of age. Your boy still has a bit of maturing and growing to do. However, many bloodlines get their growth early and then fill out whereas some mature very slowly and truly don't finish until they are over 1 year of age (know this from experience!! when my 10.5 boy all of a sudden took a growth spurt <GGG> but he was a very slow maturer). So he might be an oversized miniature BUT he is of miniature breeding. You can just use that phrasology instead of using mini vs tweenie.....*yes, he is of miniature breeding!* And if they push you and push you on him being oversized you can use a humorous answer - *well, he IS responding to the excellent food I feed quite well and exceeding our expectations <G>*.
Size is NOT the end all and be all of miniatures and people who strictly breed based on size (not quality) end up with less than stellar representations IMO.
