My seven year old LH mini-dachshund, Sadie, REALLY loves her stuffed toys. And I do mean really. Her favorite is a stuffed dog that is about her size. She ends up mounting the toy for quite a while. Not so bothersome to me, but when company comes over???? She was spayed at two and never had puppies if that has anyhting to do with it. Has anyone else had this problem?? Any ideas on what to do?? I redirect and give her another toy, but she goes back to the dog.

Oscar had a giant bone shaped stuffed fleecy toy, that was a little bigger then he is. He mounted it frequently. I ended up throwing it away.

Well, if it bothers you, I'd just put the toy away when company is coming over. Our Annie mounts her stuffed bear, and for her it's obviously a dominance thing. She's a little scaredy-cat around real animals, so I think she gets a bang out of "dominating" this bear that's as big as she is! Sometimes she'll place her other toys in front of the bear and then mount him, to especially put him in his place. It's a very natural thing for them to do, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Agree! Just put the toy away when you're having company and don't worry about it. A lot of people think that mounting is a sexual thing, but it isn't--it's a dominance thing. I've actually heard owners of female dogs who mount other dogs say that they think the dog must be gay because why else would a female assume the male "position?" http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif Hey--if she does it front of company, you can just explain what's what and that should reduce the shock factor! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the input. It is probably a dominance thing. Sadie is the low pup on the totem pole. Even the cats are above her. Her toys are about the only thing she can dominate. That's why I hate to take that away from her.

Our female, Lucy, has been mounting a stuffed dachshund named Wilbur since we purchased it for her a year and a half ago! My partner and I are professors and had a graduate seminar over soon after we purchased said Wilbur. All the chairs (17) were arranged in a giant circle and while one of our poor graduate students expounded on an assigned book, Lucy dragged Wilbur into the dead center of the circle and enthusiastically humped him for 2 minutes!

Since then Lucy has graduated to other dogs (usually male, and always larger), but she feels it is necessary to mount Wilbur once or twice or even more every evening just to get her world in its proper order!

http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif Thanks for the howl, Dr. Deb! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif I can just imagine the reactions of the circle of students as Lucy took center stage and "performed!" http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

Listen, I'd have preferred humping to what Peaches did in a similar situation at my house when my writers' group was here. Peaches settled herself down on the carpet in the middle of the circle and proceeded to produce such a dreadful gaseous emission that we had to suspend our discussion and run to open all the windows!

You need a good sense of humor when you live with dachsies!! <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm12.gif" border=0>

When Henry was a puppy, he would hump his toys so hard that he would end up scooting backwards across the room as he did so. But this is really much better than Jakey, who bites his penis.
